The contract

Claire stood by her father's bed, holding his hand, and she could feel how thin his fingers had become.

"Papa, you have to eat something," she said. "The nurse said you barely touched your food today."

Richard Bennett opened his eyes slowly. He tried to smile but the smile did not reach his eyes.

"Claire, sit down," he said. "I need to tell you something."

"Can it wait? I have to go to my second job in an hour."

"No," he said. "It cannot wait anymore."

Claire sat down slowly. Something in his voice made her chest tighten.

"Years ago, before you were even in high school, I made a deal with a man named Edward Cole," Richard said. "My business was failing and he offered to help me. I signed papers I did not read carefully. I was desperate."

"Papa, what kind of papers?"

"A loan. A big one. One I could never pay back on my own."

Claire's hands started to shake a little.

"How much do you owe them?"

"It is not about money anymore," Richard said. "Edward Cole passed away last year. His son Nathan runs the company now. And Nathan is calling in the debt."

"Then we will find a way to pay it. We can sell something. We can—"

"Claire, listen to me," Richard said, his voice breaking. "There is no amount of money that can fix this now. The only way out of this debt is marriage."

Claire stood up so fast the chair almost fell back.

"Marriage? Whose marriage?"

Richard could not look at her.

"Papa. Whose marriage?"

"Yours," he whispered. "To Nathan Cole."

For a moment, Claire could not speak. She just stood there, staring at her father, waiting for him to laugh, to say it was a joke, to say anything that would make this not real.

"You cannot be serious," she said quietly.

"I already spoke to his lawyer. The contract is ready. If you marry him, the debt disappears completely. If you refuse, they will take this apartment, they will take my medical care, they will take everything we have left."

"So you are selling me," Claire said, her voice shaking now. "That is what this is."

"Claire, please—"

"No, papa. Say it. You are selling me to pay off your mistake."

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

"I know I have no right to ask this of you," he said. "But if you say no, I will lose this bed, I will lose the treatment that is keeping me alive right now. I am not asking you for me. I am asking you because I do not know what else to do."

Claire turned away from him and walked to the window. Outside, the city looked exactly the same as it did an hour ago, cars moving, people walking, nothing had changed for anyone else in the whole world except for her.

"Does he know anything about me?" she asked without turning around. "Does this man even know my name?"

"He knows enough," Richard said quietly. "He agreed to the marriage already."

"Of course he did," Claire said. "Men like that do not marry for love. They marry to fix a business problem, and I am the problem being fixed."

She turned back to face her father.

"When is the wedding?"

"Two weeks," Richard said. "I am sorry, Claire. I am so sorry."

Claire did not answer him. She picked up her bag and walked out of the room without another word, because if she stayed one more second, she was going to cry in front of him, and she refused to let him see that.

Two weeks later, Claire stood in a white dress that did not feel like hers, in a church that did not feel like a place for love, waiting for a man she had met only once, for exactly four minutes, three days before the wedding.

The doors opened and Nathan Cole walked in.

He was tall, dressed in a black suit that probably cost more than her father's entire hospital bill, and his face showed absolutely nothing. Not anger, not sadness, not even curiosity. Just nothing.

He walked up beside her and did not look at her once.

The priest spoke the words. Claire barely heard any of them. When it was time to say "I do," her voice came out so quiet she was not sure anyone heard it except herself.

Nathan said his part in a flat voice, like he was reading from a business report.

After the ceremony, in the car heading to the Cole mansion, Claire finally spoke.

"We should probably talk," she said. "Since we are married now."

Nathan did not look up from his phone.

"There is nothing to talk about," he said.

"We are married. I think there is a lot to talk about."

He finally looked at her, and his eyes were cold in a way that made her stomach drop.

"Let me be clear about something," he said. "This marriage exists because your father owed my family money he could not repay. That is the only reason you are wearing that ring. Do not mistake this for anything real."

"I understand that," Claire said, keeping her voice steady even though her hands were shaking in her lap. "I am not asking for love. I am asking for basic respect since we will be living in the same house."

"You will have a room," Nathan said. "You will have food. You will have whatever you need. But do not expect me to treat you like a wife, because you are not one. You are a contract I am fulfilling to protect my family's company."

Claire felt her throat tighten, but she refused to let him see her cry.

"Then I will treat you exactly the same way," she said quietly. "Like a contract. Nothing more."

Nathan almost looked surprised for a second, like he did not expect her to say that. But he said nothing else. He looked back down at his phone and did not speak again for the rest of the drive.

When they arrived at the mansion, a housekeeper showed Claire to a small room at the far end of the house, far from the master bedroom where Nathan slept. The room was clean but plain, nothing like the grand house around it.

That night, alone in the small room, Claire finally let herself cry, quietly, into a pillow that smelled like a stranger's house, in a life she never chose.

She did not know that just down the hall, Nathan was standing outside his own bedroom door, staring at the wall, feeling something he refused to name.

And she definitely did not know that three floors below them, in a private office, Eleanor Cole was sitting across from a man Claire had never met, a man who smiled as he said quietly.

"The marriage happened exactly as planned. Now all we have to do is wait for it to fall apart."

Eleanor's face went pale.

"What do you mean, fall apart? What did you do?"

The man leaned back in his chair, still smiling.

"Let us just say, Richard Bennett's debt was never really about money."
