"That's not possible." Isabelle's voice came out flat, disbelieving. "Marcus, I've never signed a financial document in my life that wasn't for our household. I don't even work for the company."

"I know." Marcus's hand was still shaking slightly as he held the phone out. "I don't know what he's talking about either. But he wouldn't send something like this unless he had proof of something."

"That's not possible." Isabelle's voice came out flat, disbelieving. "Marcus, I've never signed a financial document in my life that wasn't for our household. I don't even work for the company.""I know." Marcus's hand was still shaking slightly as he held the phone out. "I don't know what he's talking about either. But he wouldn't send something like this unless he had proof of something.""Read it again," Adrian said. "Word for word."Marcus scrolled back up, his voice tight. "He says, quote, tell Isabelle Carter that the loan wasn't the only thing structured to hide where money really came from. Ask her about the wedding fund."Isabelle felt her stomach drop."What wedding fund?" Vanessa asked.

"Play it." Isabelle's voice came out sharper than she meant it to. "Adrian, play the video."He hesitated, glancing at Sophia, at her bruised face still wet with tears, then pressed play anyway. The footage was shaky, shot from a distance, clearly through some kind of long lens aimed at the hangar's side window. It showed Isabelle dropping to her knees beside Sophia. It showed the plastic ties coming loose. It showed Whitmore stepping out of his car minutes later, hands raised, calm as ever."Someone was outside this whole time," Marcus said, already moving toward the hangar door, scanning the dark tree line beyond the gravel lot. "Filming everything.""Cole." Adrian called out to the detective before he could load Whitmore into the patrol car. "You need to see this."

"Nobody moves." Cole's voice cut sharp through the hangar as the second car rolled to a stop outside. "That includes whoever's in that vehicle."Isabelle's grip tightened on Adrian's hand. "That's him. That's Whitmore.""I see him." Cole didn't take his eyes off the doorway. "Officer Reyes, secure that vehicle. Nobody gets out until I say so."One of the uniformed officers jogged toward the car. For a moment nothing happened, just the low hum of the idling engine and the sound of everyone's breathing filling the hangar. Then the passenger door opened, and Daniel Whitmore stepped out slowly, hands raised just enough to look cooperative without actually looking afraid."Detective." His voice was calm, almost pleasant, like he was greeting an old acquaintance

"Stop the car." Isabelle's hand was already on the door handle before Adrian had fully braked."Isabelle, wait." He grabbed her wrist. "We don't know who's in there. We don't know if that door being open means she got away or means something worse has already happened.""That's exactly why we can't sit here." Her voice shook, but her eyes stayed fixed on the hangar. "Call Cole. Right now. Tell him where we are."Adrian was already dialing, phone pressed to his ear, eyes still scanning the darkness around the building. Behind them, Marcus's car pulled up fast, gravel crunching under the tires as he and Vanessa climbed out."That's Sophia's car," Marcus said, nodding at the black sedan with its door hanging open. "The same plates from the airport pickup manifest when my contact is pulled.""Then she was here." Isabelle stepped out despite Adrian's protest, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Or she still is.""Isabelle, please." Adrian caught up to her, lowering the phone from his ea

"Adrian." Isabelle shoved the phone into his hands, her voice shaking. "Look at this. Look at what just came through."He stared at the photograph for only a second before his whole body went rigid. "Who sent this?""I don't know. Unknown sender, no name, nothing." Isabelle's chest was heaving now, panic clawing its way up her throat. "She never got on that plane. They took her somewhere. Adrian, they're going to hurt her.""Let me see it again." Marcus's voice cut in sharply. He'd arrived minutes earlier with the flight information, and now he crowded close, snatching the phone from Adrian's hand before anyone could stop him. His eyes moved fast across the image. "That's not an airport tarmac. Look at the lighting. That's private. That's a hangar somewhere outside the city.""How do you know that?" Vanessa asked."Because I've flown out of half a dozen private strips with Adrian for the last seven years." Marcus's jaw tightened. "This one, the angle of that fence line, I think it's W

Isabelle didn't remember standing up. One moment she was sitting frozen in that chair, the next she was moving through the hallway, her heels striking the floor too fast, too hard, her mind racing ahead of her body toward some decision she hadn't fully made yet.Adrian caught her by the arm outside the conference room, his face already creased with worry. "Isabelle. What happened? You look like you've seen something impossible.""Sophia's my cousin." The words came out flat, disbelieving, like she was still testing whether they were true by saying them out loud. "My mother had a sister. She died before I was born, murdered, covered up to look like an accident, and the man responsible was Whitmore's father. My mother spent thirty years quietly paying guilt money to the daughter she left behind. That daughter is Sophia."Adrian went very still, his hand tightening slightly around her arm. "Say that again.""Sophia Reed is my mother's niece," Isabelle said. "Her family, Adrian. She's bee
