The house was quiet when Jessica unlocked the front door.

She stepped inside and closed it softly behind her.

For a moment, she thought she was alone.

"You're late."

Michael's voice came from the hallway.

She looked up and found him standing near the staircase, his jacket already off, sleeves rolled to his forearms.

He looked as though he'd been waiting.

"I had dinner with Maya," Jessica said.

He nodded once. Neither of them moved. The silence stretched.

"Who brought you home?"

  • The Wife he Never loved    THE MAN BEHIND THE SILENCE

The mansion was quiet when Michael stepped inside, but tonight the silence didn't calm him.It reminded him of everything he had failed to stop.He loosened his tie as he walked through the hallway, his steps slower than usual. The image refused to leave his mind. The white sheet. The empty apartment.Another person who knew the truth about Makadi Street.Another person he couldn't save."Michael?"He stopped.Jessica stood at the entrance of the living room, watching him. She had been waiting. The untouched cup of tea beside her told him everything. Her eyes moved over him carefully, noticing the things everyone else missed. The tiredness in his face. The tension in his shoulders. The way he looked like he was carrying something too heavy."You're home late." Her voice was soft. Not accusing.Just concerned.Michael looked past her and noticed the untouched cup of tea sitting on the table. She had been waiting for him.A strange ache settled in his chest.Jessica always waited for him,

  • The Wife he Never loved    The Autopsy Report

The sound of screeching tires broke the heavy silence.Michael turned.A small silver sedan stopped hard at the curb. The driver's door flew open.Grace stumbled out.She hadn't even switched off the engine. Her eyes searched the crowd until they found Michael."Where is he?" she asked, breathless.Michael didn't answer. He couldn't. Grace followed his gaze. The white sheet. The stretcher. The officers standing nearby. Her face drained of colour."No..." She took a shaky step forward. "No..."An officer reached out to stop her."I'm sorry, ma'am"She pulled away. "I have to see him.""Grace..."Michael caught her arm before she reached the stretcher. She looked at him.Her eyes searched his face for hope. For a lie.For anything.Instead, she found silence. Her knees gave way. Michael caught her before she hit the ground."He promised..." she whispered. "He promised he'd wait."Tears spilled freely now. "I told him we'd come.""I told him he wouldn't be alone anymore."Her voice crack

  • The Wife he Never loved    TOO lATE

Grace's fingers trembled as she stared at the phone. She had rehearsed the conversation a dozen times. None of the words sounded safe anymore. Finally, she pressed Michael's number. He answered on the second ring."Grace?""I found something."Michael straightened immediately."Where are you?""I'm not telling you over the phone."His voice hardened."Grace...""They're watching."Silence."I know they are."Michael rose from his chair. "What did you find?"Grace looked through the thin motel curtain.A black SUV rolled slowly past the motel, its tinted windows hiding whoever sat inside. Grace didn't breathe until it disappeared around the corner. She waited until it was gone."There was someone helping Daniel."Michael frowned."What?""He wasn't investigating Makadi Street alone."Michael leaned forward."Who?”"I can't tell you now.""Grace—""They'll kill him."The words came out barely above a whisper. "And they'll kill me if they know I called you."Michael grabbed his car keys.

  • The Wife he Never loved    Unexpeted sight

Michael had been staring at the window for ten minutes. The silver ring sat beside his laptop.Every time he looked away, his eyes returned to the same thing. The unfamiliar crest carved into the black stone.A symbol he had never seen before.A symbol that somehow felt connected to everything falling apart. His phone vibrated. The screen lit up with a name he hadn't expected.Sarah.The message was short. Can we meet? Please. Just once.Michael stared at the screen for a long moment. He almost ignored it.Instead, he typed a single word.Where? The café overlooked the river.Quiet.Private.Far from reporters and curious eyes.Sarah was already there when he arrived. She sat near the window, one hand wrapped around a cup of tea that had long gone cold. The other rested protectively over the gentle curve of her stomach.Michael pulled out the chair opposite her."You said it was important."Sarah looked at him for several seconds before speaking."It is."Neither of them touched the dr

  • The Wife he Never loved    Secret Dinner

Michael stood in front of the mirror, fastening the last button of his charcoal suit. The silver ring rested on the dresser beside his watch. He picked it up again. The black stone caught the light from the bedside lamp, the unfamiliar crest staring back at him as if daring him to remember something he had never known. His thumb traced the engraving along the edge.Nothing.No initials. No clue.Only questions.A knock sounded on the bedroom door."Sir?"His driver."The car is ready."Michael slipped the ring into the inside pocket of his jacket before picking up his watch."I'm coming."Across the hall, Jessica stood before her wardrobe. Her fingers paused on several dresses before settling on a simple black one.Elegant.Not flashy. She smoothed the fabric over her waist and looked at herself in the mirror. For a moment, she barely recognized the woman looking back. She fastened a pair of small pearl earrings, brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear, and reached for a light c

  • The Wife he Never loved    RING OF DEATH

Michael stared at the fresh tire tracks cutting through the dust.Too late.Again.Then—The low growl of an engine drifted through the silence. His head snapped up.At the far end of the industrial road, a pair of red taillights flickered between the abandoned buildings. They hadn't gotten far.Michael ran.His shoes pounded against the cracked concrete as he crossed the loading yard, his lungs burning with every stride. The sedan rolled toward the rusted exit gate.Almost there. The driver's door swung open for the briefest second.Someone stepped out.A hood concealed the person's face as they hurried to drag aside a fallen metal barrier blocking the road.Michael didn't think. He sprinted harder."Stop!"The stranger looked back. For one heartbeat, they froze. Then they bolted for the car.Michael caught up just as the driver grabbed the door.He lunged. His hand closed around the stranger's wrist. The two of them stumbled hard against the side of the sedan. The stranger fought ba
