MOMENT OF TRUTH

last update publish date: 2026-05-23 08:18:09

Jessica woke up before her alarm. The thin morning light spilled into her room, She lay there a moment letting herself breath, Then dragged herself out of the bed and stepped into the shower the warm water helped shake off the heaviest in her chest, Though the thoughts of last night still lingered.

Dressing for work was harder than usual, She tried One outfit then another, simple professional safe something that wouldn't draw attention but wouldn't make her invisible either. She straightened her hair, smoothen her dress, checked her reflection a hundred times, and let out a quiet breath.

Finally, she grabbed her bag and stepped into the hallway. And froze.

Michael was there, leaning against the wall, phone in hand, dressed like he belonged in a magazine. But then their eyes met and Jessica stomach did a little flip.

"Morning." She said. Voice a little too light.

"Morning." he replied. Calm, measured. His eyes didn't look away. Just held hers for a second longer than, she expected. Her fingers tightened around her bag, strap.

"I'm heading out," She said, trying for casual.

He nodded. Then his gaze filickered back to her, and for a moment something in his eyes made her heart skip.

"You look," he started, and Jessica held her breath.

"Fine," he finished, almost too quickly as hel'd caught himself

Jessica forced a nod "Thanks", she whispered.

He moved past her, close enough for her to feel it, The space around him seemed to shift

Her mind screamed: He's going to kiss me,  Her heart thumped so loud she was sure he could hear it but he didn't, Instead he leaned slightly closer, his eyes softening just enough to make her feel something dangerous, and private like a secret shared without words.

"Don't forget to lock the door before you leave," he murmured.

Her heart stuttered. I.....I will she said, voice shaking

He nodded, picked up his car keys then walked away.

The door clicked behind him and the silence of the house pressed back against her. She leaned against the wall for a second, letting out a shaking breath.

What just happened.?

The walk to work was a blur, Every step her thought kept circling that moment in the hallway, the tension, the way he' almost said something.

By the time she arrived at the office, she had straightened her dress checked her hair once more and told her herself it was just work . Nothing else. Don't think about him  But it didn't work.

Her desk was normal, her bag dropped with a soft thud. She opened her laptop and organized her Day

Then she saw It

Around noon. Then she sat at her office window leaning against the edge, trying to take a breath of fresh air that when she saw It.

Michael black luxury car, gleaming under the morning sun parked neatly in front of the hospital. Her heart stuttered.

Why is he here,? Why today?

Her fingers gripped the edge of the window as it could steady her pounding chest. From upstairs she watched him step out tall, commanding as always.

But then......... He opened the passenger door for a woman, he held her hand gentle.

Jessica's breath caught. The same man who barely looked at her at home, The Man who kept her arms length was holding this woman's hand tenderly, protectively. Her stomach twisted. She froze.

No........... This can't be happening

She couldn't see the woman clearly and yet the sight stabbed her in the heart, Her fingers dug into her Palms. For a moment she felt rooted to the spot, unable to breathe, unable to look away.

Before she could fully process it, they walked inside the hospital, Almost intimate in their presence.

Then a voice called from the nurse's station, startling her.

" A new patient just arrived,"The nurse said "you'll attend to them tomorrow morning,"

The nurse handed her the file. Jessica took it , trying to steady her shaking hands.

And then she saw the Name SARAH COLLINS

Her blood ran cold. This....... Is everything.

***

Michael stood by the glass window of his office, The city stretching endlessly beneath him. He wasn't really looking at it his thoughts were elsewhere tangled , heavy impossible to sort.

The phone buzzed again missed calls, three from his mother, Two from the board, One unknown number. He let it sit for a moment, Just breathing, Then picked up.

The unknown number had sent a message

"Your wife doesn't know about the other one does she. Fix it or I will.

Michael hand stilled. Simple words, heavy meaning. His chest tightened he dropped the phone on the desk running a hand down the back of his neck

Corporate rivalries, Threats. But this.... this was different.

His jaw hardened. The day had just barely begun and already it threatened to unravel, He walked back to his desk loosening his tie,but the pressure in his chest didn't ease. It hadn't in days He hadn't slept well.

Couldn't stop thinking about Jessica, About Sarah, about the mess he'd tried to keep clean untouchable

"Sir, The Investors are waiting for you, his assistant said, her voice careful at the door

"I know,"he replied too calm too controlled

"They're asking about the situation ", She said hesitate.Of course they were.

Michael gave a short nod "Give me five minutes".

The door closed behind her leaving him in the heavy silence that followed him everywhere these days. Not The kind of silence that bring peace, the kind that presses against your chest and makes every thought heavier.

His thoughts driffed ,unbidden , to Jessica to the morning in the hallway. The way she had looked at him, careful but alive and how much he had noticed, more than he had planned to more than he should have.

Her presence lingered, soft but impossible to ignore, He Exhaled slowly, trying to push it down.

There were bigger fire's to fight, board members, investors threats to the company. He couldn't let any of it spill over to her, That she remained untouched by the chaos was the one part of his life he could still control.

Then a knock at the door. Sarah stepped in Calm and collected.

Michael didn't even looked at her at first,Then she spoke

"Michael. we need to talk ."

"About what?" he asked, his voice steady but Cold.

"About her," she said softly"Jessica she deserves to know " Michael leaned back, Arms crossed jaw tight. He hadn't wanted this conversation here not in the middle of the day with investors, and board reports waiting.

"I'm handling it", he said "Carefully "

Sarah took a step closer, "Michael, she's your wife not just a signature on a contract. You can't keep her in the dark forever. Every day you wait makes it worse,",

Her words hit him like a shock"she's not ready,"he murmured. Almost a whisper"she doesn't need to know everything. Not yet ".

Sarah shook her head. Not ready?

"Michael.... She's already part of this life whether you admit it or not. She's is your wife. The longer you wait the harder it will hit her when she finds out ".

He glanced at the skyline outside, His chest ached. He wanted to scream to tell her to leave, but he couldn't not here, not now .

"And the company?"he said, voice rough. The board? The investors?

Sarah eyes softening slightly. "this isn't just business. This is her life you can't protect her from everything but you can protect her from Yourself".

Michael Exhaled slowly, letting the tension roll off his shoulder.

It was Jessica he wanted to shield from the Truth, from the world, from the consequences of his choice.

Sarah watched him quietly . "You can't hide from this forever," she said

"The board will know something's is off. And if you don't tell her someone else will ".

Michael eyes darkened."I won't let anyone hurt her. Not the board, Not the investors, Not anyone.

His voice cracked slightly, betraying more than he intended.

Sarah's expression softened, Almost imperceptible."Then becareful, Michael.

But don't make the mistake of thinking silence protects her, It's doesn't

She paused, then her voice shifted, raw now angry."And what about me ? Don't you care about us?

She picked up her bag and left.

He opened his eyes and straightened. His chest still ached but somewhere beneath it, he felt a flicker of something. Determination,

maybe or

The quiet dread of a man who knows the clock is running out

Long enough to survive a night shift without coffee.Long enough for the hospital to feel more like home than the mansion in Kensington ever did. Here, at least, people talked to her. Here, she existed."Morning, Jess," Maya called from the nurses' station."New transfer coming to maternity today. Management said you'll assist her."JESSICA nodded, flipping through patient files absentmindedly."Name?"Maya checked the clipboard. "SARAH COLLINS".The name meant nothing at first. Just another patient. Jessica took the file and walked toward the ward, already thinking about medication schedules and charts. But when she pushed the door open and stepped inside, she froze. The woman sitting on the bed looked... familiar. Too put-together to ignore. Long, smooth hair. Perfect skin. Expensive clothes, even in a hospital gown. She didn't look weak. Didn't look sick. She looked comfortable a
