Chapter 2

Autor: Tiny Pear
The next day, Rhys picked up the divorce papers and headed straight to Waverly Corp.

Elara happened to be in a meeting. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass of the conference room, sunlight poured in, and Elara was the only focal point.

She was slender and poised, her wrists pale where they showed past her cuffs, her fingers tapping lightly against the table with the quiet authority of someone used to being in charge.

It was the same composure—the same intensity that had once made Rhys's heart race.

He swallowed the bitterness and handed the divorce papers to her assistant, Riley Grey. Riley brought them to Elara just as she was listening intently to a subordinate's report. Without a second thought, she signed her name in a swift, careless flourish.

The whole thing went impossibly smoothly.

Rhys took back those flimsy sheets of paper and stood there staring at them for a long time before tucking them into his bag. He was about to leave when a clear voice called after him. "Mr. Lockhart, wait."

Asher wore an apologetic expression. "I just found out about the baby's name, and I wanted to say I'm sorry. Elara just loves me too much. Back when we were together, she hurt a lot of innocent people because of me.

"She treasured every second we spent together. She'd turn her phone off or put it on silent all the time, so her business partners sometimes had to show up at the house just to reach her.

"She even had Riley send me her full schedule every two hours, just so I'd feel secure. Riley had quite a time keeping up."

The Elara that Asher described was a complete stranger to Rhys.

All Rhys had ever known was that Elara didn't like being in the same room as him. In five years of marriage, they'd slept in separate bedrooms, even on the nights they'd been together.

All he'd known was that whenever he tried to share something with her, even without any outside interruption, Elara would cut him off and say she had work to get back to.

All he'd known was that whenever he carefully asked Riley where Elara was, Riley would just give an apologetic look and say it wasn't something that could be shared.

The difference between how Elara treated the man she loved and how she treated Rhys couldn't have been sharper.

His knuckles went white, the dull ache building in waves, but Rhys just smiled faintly. "That's ancient history. But telling me all this, are you trying to rekindle things with my wife? Are you knowingly stepping in as the other man?"

Asher hadn't expected Rhys to hit back that hard, and his expression shifted. "You think Elara picked you for this arrangement because she actually wanted you? The kind of person she hates most is exactly your type, arrogant and full of yourself.

"She needed a fake marriage. Rather than drag some decent, respectable man into it, she figured she might as well pick you. You were already shameless and out of control, so what difference did it make?"

Rhys's eyes went wide.

From the day he was born, everyone around him had told him the same thing. He had to be steady, be obedient, be ambitious, so that when the time came for a family alliance, he'd be an asset.

He'd refused. Why should he? He was Rhys Lockhart, and he was going to live life on his own terms.

He'd always believed Elara understood that about him. He'd fallen in love with her because of the way she'd once told him to just be himself.

But now he realized it was never understanding. It was because as long as he stayed wild and reckless, she could use him and hurt him without ever having to feel guilty about it.

Just then, a faint noise drifted from down the hall. The meeting had ended.

Asher suddenly grabbed Rhys's hand. "Rhys, Elara will only ever be mine."

The second Elara stepped out of the conference room, Asher let out a cry. "Don't push me!"

He pulled Rhys with him as they both tumbled backward toward the staircase.

Elara spent a full month in the hospital. Her doctor looked at her, struggling to find the words. "Ms. Waverly, if there's a next time, there won't be anything anyone can do for you."Elara didn't care. All she did was quietly keep up with what Rhys had been doing. She learned that he'd become a talented gallery owner and had recently held an exhibition that drew attention from across the industry, earning widespread praise from critics and peers alike. She learned that his married life was happy, and that the Hartfields treated him like one of their own.She learned that the past two years had been grueling for him, full of struggle, but that Cecily had been by his side through all of it.Elara also started seeing a therapist. The therapist told her that sometimes, letting go was the best outcome for both people. Loving someone didn't mean having to possess them. She could do what she'd done with Asher, watching from a distance and protecting him quietly, and that would be enou

On the other side, Rhys got into the car.It was his wedding night, but thanks to Elara's appearance, the ceremony had hit a rough patch."I'm sorry."Rhys had barely opened his mouth when Cecily's quiet apology reached him first. She pulled the car over to the side and said it again. "I'm sorry. I should have checked the guest list more carefully."But the Hartfields were one of the most prominent families in the country, several times larger than even the Waverlys. Their guest list spanned business circles across the globe. There was no realistic way to vet every single name. The love in Cecily's eyes hadn't changed one bit, and the sight of it softened everything in Rhys. He knew that what he felt for Cecily was different from what he'd once felt for Elara.Elara had always been distant, untouchable, and he had tamped down his own personality to try to match her. There had always been something uneven about it, something that made him feel like he was looking up instead of acr

The hollow, suffocating emptiness that had been clinging to her like a curse vanished the instant her arms closed around Rhys. But it lasted only a second before he wrenched himself free and shoved her back hard."We have nothing to do with each other anymore." His voice was flat."I'd appreciate it if you showed some restraint, Ms. Waverly."Elara's breathing was fast and shallow. She wanted nothing more than to drag him away by force, but she was terrified of making him hate her even more. She couldn't accept this outcome, but she also knew she had no right to fight it. She was the one who had failed him."Rhys, I love you." Elara would have torn her own chest open and shown him her heart if it meant he'd believe her.She was a woman who could close nine-figure deals without blinking, but right now her voice was shaking. "After you left, I realized I'd stopped loving Asher a long time ago. That was also when I found out what he'd done to you, everything he put you through. I'm s

Rhys hadn't noticed Elara at all.Under the spotlight, with every eye in the room on him and Cecily, his palms were damp with sweat and his heart was racing.Cecily felt his nerves and smiled gently at him. "I love you."The crowd erupted into cheers, and Rhys felt his eyes sting with tears. It felt like a dream. This was his second wedding, and even he was surprised that he'd stepped into marriage again so soon. He'd been certain he would never trust another person for the rest of his life. But Cecily had barged into his world anyway, and with her warmth, her patience, and her kindness, she had melted through every wall he'd built and given him the courage to love again. He nodded, about to say "I do."But a sudden commotion broke out below. He looked down just in time to see a woman in a formal dress charge toward the edge of the stage and rip a microphone out of someone's hand. She turned to face him, and his gaze went hard."Rhys! It's me! Elara!" Her voice rang through the

But ever since Rhys left, Riley had learned just how devastating Elara's unraveling could be.Over the past two years, she'd gone through no fewer than 50 surgeries, major and minor. Ten of those times, she had tried to end her own life and was only stopped because someone found her in time. When Elara showed no reaction, Riley gritted his teeth. "Ms. Waverly, we've never stopped looking for Mr. Lockhart. Over the past two years, our people have searched over a hundred countries. I believe we'll find him soon. Please don't give up."Something finally shifted behind Elara's vacant eyes.He was right. She had been searching for Rhys this entire time. Her team had combed through a hundred countries, and she had lived through a hundred cycles of hope collapsing into despair."I know." She closed her eyes. The only thing still keeping her alive was the chance of finding him.She took a deep breath. "What time is it?"Riley felt a painful mix of relief and sadness at watching Elara sl

Two years had passed. The bar was loud and drenched in neon. A male escort tried to lean against Elara, tilting his head with a flirtatious smile. "Ms. Waverly, need another drink?""Get lost." The words came out cold enough to make him flinch, and he was gone in seconds.Elara's friend, Maggie Fielding, let out a long sigh. "Elara, it's been two years. You have to stop doing this to yourself."This wasn't the first time she'd brought Elara out to try to take her mind off things, but every single time, any man who got within arm's reach was driven away with one look."Elara, let yourself move on. Find someone better than Rhys. You'll get past this eventually, the same way you got over what happened with Asher.""He's different." Maggie heard Elara's voice come out raw and exhausted, barely above a murmur. "Rhys isn't the same."Maggie went quiet, watching Elara hunch over and drink like she was trying to drown, and felt her own eyes sting. He really wasn't the same. After th
