Chapter 3

Autor: Tiny Pear
Rhys didn't have time to react. As they tumbled down the stairs, Asher used him as a cushion the entire way. His back and ribs slammed against every hard edge on the way down, and by the time they hit the bottom, the pain was searing.

"Someone call an ambulance!"

Elara's voice, tight with panic, tore through the air above him. Rhys forced his eyes open and saw her sprinting in his direction.

But she wasn't coming for him.

She stepped right over his twitching body without breaking stride and went straight to Asher, who had nothing more than a few scrapes. She crouched beside him like he was something precious, her voice trembling as she asked if he was in pain.

Rhys closed his eyes again. The stabbing pain in his legs was getting worse by the second, but it was nothing compared to the suffocating, tearing sensation in his chest.

The ambulance arrived quickly. But Elara had only called one.

She climbed in herself.

When the paramedics asked if there were any other injured parties, the warmth drained from her voice entirely. "No."

The ambulance pulled away. By the time the one Rhys had called for himself finally showed up, he was on the verge of blacking out.

His leg had twisted at a grotesque angle. The situation was critical, and the doctor told him that a family member needed to sign a risk disclosure form before they could operate.

Rhys didn't want to contact Elara, but the doctor had already dialed her number.

She picked up almost immediately. He closed his eyes and told her, his voice rough and strained, that he was about to go into surgery.

Elara's tone was ice-cold as she cut him off. "Rhys, apologize to Asher right now. Otherwise, there's no reason for us to be in contact."

The last flicker of hope behind Rhys's eyes went out.

He didn't try to explain himself. Instead, he let out a low, hoarse scoff. "In your dreams."

Then, with the very last shred of strength he had, he hung up.

"I'm sorry, doctor." He turned his head to the side, and a single tear slipped from the corner of his eye.

"I don't have any family. Whatever happens in that operating room, I'll take full responsibility myself."

It was true. He and Elara had never really been husband and wife. From beginning to end, it had only ever been him, wanting something that was never there.

That was all it ever was.

The surgery lasted four hours before the doctors managed to pull him back. But the surgeon's tone was grim.

"The nerves in your leg are completely dead. You'll have a permanent limp for the rest of your life, and any strenuous physical activity is out of the question. If you'd been brought in sooner, there might've been a chance."

If Elara hadn't lied to the paramedics when the first ambulance arrived, Rhys would not have been left with a permanent disability.

He closed his eyes in a daze, and all he could see was every version of himself that used to be, riding wild across open fields, sprinting against the setting sun, tearing down a track at full speed. All of that was gone now, and he'd lost the right to that kind of freedom.

The moment the anesthesia wore off, the first thing Rhys did was send the divorce papers to Howard Doyle. Howard told him the process would take about two weeks.

The second thing he did was pull the high-definition security footage from the stairwell. The camera angle was completely unobstructed. It showed, with perfect clarity, that Asher had grabbed Rhys and thrown them both backward on purpose.

Rhys sent the video to Elara. Her incoming call lit up the screen almost immediately.

He ignored it, muted his phone, and tossed it aside.

An hour later, Elara walked into his hospital room with a dark expression.

Elara spent a full month in the hospital. Her doctor looked at her, struggling to find the words. "Ms. Waverly, if there's a next time, there won't be anything anyone can do for you."Elara didn't care. All she did was quietly keep up with what Rhys had been doing. She learned that he'd become a talented gallery owner and had recently held an exhibition that drew attention from across the industry, earning widespread praise from critics and peers alike. She learned that his married life was happy, and that the Hartfields treated him like one of their own.She learned that the past two years had been grueling for him, full of struggle, but that Cecily had been by his side through all of it.Elara also started seeing a therapist. The therapist told her that sometimes, letting go was the best outcome for both people. Loving someone didn't mean having to possess them. She could do what she'd done with Asher, watching from a distance and protecting him quietly, and that would be enou

On the other side, Rhys got into the car.It was his wedding night, but thanks to Elara's appearance, the ceremony had hit a rough patch."I'm sorry."Rhys had barely opened his mouth when Cecily's quiet apology reached him first. She pulled the car over to the side and said it again. "I'm sorry. I should have checked the guest list more carefully."But the Hartfields were one of the most prominent families in the country, several times larger than even the Waverlys. Their guest list spanned business circles across the globe. There was no realistic way to vet every single name. The love in Cecily's eyes hadn't changed one bit, and the sight of it softened everything in Rhys. He knew that what he felt for Cecily was different from what he'd once felt for Elara.Elara had always been distant, untouchable, and he had tamped down his own personality to try to match her. There had always been something uneven about it, something that made him feel like he was looking up instead of acr

The hollow, suffocating emptiness that had been clinging to her like a curse vanished the instant her arms closed around Rhys. But it lasted only a second before he wrenched himself free and shoved her back hard."We have nothing to do with each other anymore." His voice was flat."I'd appreciate it if you showed some restraint, Ms. Waverly."Elara's breathing was fast and shallow. She wanted nothing more than to drag him away by force, but she was terrified of making him hate her even more. She couldn't accept this outcome, but she also knew she had no right to fight it. She was the one who had failed him."Rhys, I love you." Elara would have torn her own chest open and shown him her heart if it meant he'd believe her.She was a woman who could close nine-figure deals without blinking, but right now her voice was shaking. "After you left, I realized I'd stopped loving Asher a long time ago. That was also when I found out what he'd done to you, everything he put you through. I'm s

Rhys hadn't noticed Elara at all.Under the spotlight, with every eye in the room on him and Cecily, his palms were damp with sweat and his heart was racing.Cecily felt his nerves and smiled gently at him. "I love you."The crowd erupted into cheers, and Rhys felt his eyes sting with tears. It felt like a dream. This was his second wedding, and even he was surprised that he'd stepped into marriage again so soon. He'd been certain he would never trust another person for the rest of his life. But Cecily had barged into his world anyway, and with her warmth, her patience, and her kindness, she had melted through every wall he'd built and given him the courage to love again. He nodded, about to say "I do."But a sudden commotion broke out below. He looked down just in time to see a woman in a formal dress charge toward the edge of the stage and rip a microphone out of someone's hand. She turned to face him, and his gaze went hard."Rhys! It's me! Elara!" Her voice rang through the

But ever since Rhys left, Riley had learned just how devastating Elara's unraveling could be.Over the past two years, she'd gone through no fewer than 50 surgeries, major and minor. Ten of those times, she had tried to end her own life and was only stopped because someone found her in time. When Elara showed no reaction, Riley gritted his teeth. "Ms. Waverly, we've never stopped looking for Mr. Lockhart. Over the past two years, our people have searched over a hundred countries. I believe we'll find him soon. Please don't give up."Something finally shifted behind Elara's vacant eyes.He was right. She had been searching for Rhys this entire time. Her team had combed through a hundred countries, and she had lived through a hundred cycles of hope collapsing into despair."I know." She closed her eyes. The only thing still keeping her alive was the chance of finding him.She took a deep breath. "What time is it?"Riley felt a painful mix of relief and sadness at watching Elara sl

Two years had passed. The bar was loud and drenched in neon. A male escort tried to lean against Elara, tilting his head with a flirtatious smile. "Ms. Waverly, need another drink?""Get lost." The words came out cold enough to make him flinch, and he was gone in seconds.Elara's friend, Maggie Fielding, let out a long sigh. "Elara, it's been two years. You have to stop doing this to yourself."This wasn't the first time she'd brought Elara out to try to take her mind off things, but every single time, any man who got within arm's reach was driven away with one look."Elara, let yourself move on. Find someone better than Rhys. You'll get past this eventually, the same way you got over what happened with Asher.""He's different." Maggie heard Elara's voice come out raw and exhausted, barely above a murmur. "Rhys isn't the same."Maggie went quiet, watching Elara hunch over and drink like she was trying to drown, and felt her own eyes sting. He really wasn't the same. After th
