Chapter 4

Penulis: Luminous Pear
Liam's eyes were bloodshot. He turned and charged forward.

I grabbed him and held him back.

"Don't."

Munskar watched as I restrained Liam, and the smile on his lips grew wider.

"I already told you. I'm giving you two hours to think about it. But since you refuse, I had no choice but to come here myself."

Timora stepped forward in her high heels, sorrow written all over her face.

"I know you think we're being unreasonable. But that's my daughter. She's only eighteen, yet she's already been fighting for her life in the Healing Grove for sixteen hours!"

Her eyes turned red-rimmed as she wrapped her arm around Munskar, who gently patted her shoulder. Then he slowly turned back to me, his gaze cold enough to freeze the air between us.

"Twenty million. I can transfer it right now. Get in the car, and we'll leave immediately."

"I told you already. I won't take this mission."

"You're still negotiating with me?"

He tilted his head slightly, his contempt impossible to hide.

"Fine. Name your price."

He scoffed.

"Forty million? Sixty million? Isn't money what you want? I'll give you whatever amount you ask for."

I lifted my eyes to meet his.

"This isn't about money."

"Then what is it about?"

He took a step forward, and the overwhelming pressure of his presence crashed over me.

"If it's not money, then what? Is it because we're enemies? Do I even know you?"

I stared straight into his eyes. The warmth he once looked at me with was long gone. All that remained was arrogance, superiority, and impatience.

"We've never met."

"Then there's no reason for you to refuse."

He waved his hand, delivering his final ultimatum.

"I don't care who you are. I don't care what kind of attitude you have."

His eyes darkened with desperation.

"Vivian is fighting for her life, and you're the only one who can save her. You have two choices. Take the money and come with me. If you refuse, I'll make the choice for you."

He turned his gaze toward Liam, his eyes cold and merciless.

"Otherwise, your partner's daughter will spend tonight working the entire hospital's night shift alone."

Liam's face instantly drained of color.

"What are you talking about?"

His voice trembled.

"Nothing."

Munskar looked at him without a trace of emotion.

"Every year, witches die unexpectedly in Snow Town. Especially the inexperienced newcomers."

"You're threatening us with my daughter's life!"

Munskar didn't answer.

He simply turned his attention back to me.

"As for the Herbalist Guild... If Vivian dies, I'll shut this place down tomorrow."

Timora stepped forward again, desperation written in her eyes.

"Olivia, please. Can you save her? Vivian must be terrified, and she must be freezing."

She reached out toward my arm.

I instinctively stepped back, leaving her hand grasping at empty air.

"Don't touch me."

Timora's hand froze midair. A flash of irritation crossed her face. But in the next second, it was replaced by a wounded, helpless expression.

"I didn't mean to offend you. I'm just too worried."

Munskar pulled her back to his side.

The look he gave me was colder and sharper than before.

"This is your last chance. What's your answer?"

"No."

His lips curved into a smile.

A loud, arrogant laugh escaped him.

"Fine."

He pulled out his phone and dialed a number.

"Hello, is this the Herbalist Guild in Snow Town? Have the new girl, Ophelia, work the entire night shift at the hospital alone tonight. Yes. Alone. Every patient will be under her care."

Liam couldn't hold himself back anymore.

He rushed forward.

"Munskar! How dare you!"

One of the bodyguards stepped forward instantly. He raised a hand and shoved Liam hard.

Liam's body slammed into the concrete ground, and a dull crack echoed as his forehead struck the pavement.

Blood spilled instantly.

"Olivia!"

He pushed himself back up from the ground and fell to his knees in front of me again.

"Please, save Ophelia!"

Munskar ended the call and looked at me, a victorious smile curling at the corner of his lips.

"See? This was such a simple matter. You're the one who insisted on making it complicated."

Blood dripped from Liam's forehead as he knelt on the ground, his entire body trembling.

I turned my gaze away from him and looked back at Munskar.

Munskar was using the same tactic. It was the same cruel game he had played ten years ago, and he was using it again.

To him, others' lives had always been nothing more than disposable pieces on a chessboard.

"You think I'm scared?"

Munskar shrugged carelessly. "Whether you're scared or not doesn't matter."

"If you don't go, his daughter won't survive the night, and this Herbalist Guild won't make it either. All because of your insignificant obsession, you're willing to sacrifice everyone's lives and futures. Tell me, Olivia. Is it really worth it?"

Timora stepped forward again, her voice gentle and sweet, like the whisper of a venomous snake.

"Olivia, you only need to go to the Healing Grove once, and everything will be over. We'll still pay you, and I'll make sure the Herbalist Guild is protected. Also, Liam's daughter can come home safely. Why put yourself through this?"

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath of the cold air.

The engine hummed, and the chill of late autumn cut against my skin like a blade.

I opened my eyes and stared at Munskar.

"I can't save her. Her father killed my daughter to protect the daughter of the shewolf he loved since childhood. How could I possibly save her? If you force me to go, I'll send her to her death with my own hands. And then I'll join my daughter in the afterlife."

"Ten years ago, I abused my position as Alpha and took away the only antidote that could have saved a life. My decision cost my own daughter her life. I failed her and Olivia. Today, I stand here to offer them my deepest remorse. If I could turn back time, I would never make the same choice again."After saying those words, he bowed deeply. He stayed that way for a long time, never lifting his head.Timora also stepped onto the podium.Through her tears, she admitted the truth. She confessed that she had deliberately staged Vivian's fall back then and deceived Munskar into taking away the antidote. The moment the press conference aired, all werewolf packs erupted."I never thought Munskar would be the worst Alpha our pack has ever had.""He was willing to abandon even his own daughter. How heartless can someone be?""Shouldn't we be condemning Timora too? She created a lie and cruelly caused the death of a five-year-old pup. How can she live with herself?""They need to be puni

Munskar's and Timora's eyes lit up instantly, looking like two mutts drowning who had suddenly found a rock to cling to."But I have conditions."I looked at them, my gaze cold and unwavering."First, tomorrow at ten in the morning, you will publicly apologize to me at the pack council meeting. You will admit that ten years ago, you abused your authority, took away the antidote, and caused my daughter's death. Second, you will voluntarily step down as Alpha and accept an investigation. "Third, Timora will admit the truth about what happened back then. You will admit that you deliberately deceived Munskar into taking the antidote away."Timora's face turned deathly pale."No! That's not true! I didn't do it on purpose!""Whether you did or not, you know the answer better than anyone."My gaze turned icy."I checked the surveillance footage from the Healing Grove back then. Vivian didn't even have a scratch on her knee after she fell. However, you still insisted that Munskar se

Everyone turned toward the voice.A werewolf in a black suit slowly walked over, several lawyers following behind him. Each carried a briefcase in their hand.He stopped beside me and pulled out a business card, handing it to Damian."I'm Olivia's attorney. Whatever the matter is, discuss it with me."Damian accepted the card. When his eyes landed on the name printed on it, his expression shifted slightly.Thorne Law—a name known throughout all the packs. He was a legendary figure who specialized in administrative disputes, with a perfect record since the beginning of his career.Munskar's face turned livid."Mr. Law, this is an internal matter. You'd better stay out of it."Thorne replied in a calm and unwavering tone, "Munskar, I am Olivia's legal representative. Protecting my client's legal rights is my responsibility. All toxic substances in my client's possession have complete documentation. They were obtained legally and are fully compliant with regulations. You have no a

When we returned to the herb room, Liam finally couldn't hold back his question."Olivia, you planned for all of this?"I nodded, then I poured him a glass of water."From the moment I received the mission, I knew he would try something like this. So, I contacted someone I saved in the past. By now, Ophelia should have already arrived at his place. I asked him to keep an eye on her. The moment anything happened, he was to take her away immediately."Liam accepted the glass, but his hands wouldn't stop shaking."Thank you for saving my daughter, Olivia.""You don't have to thank me."I looked out the window."You've stayed by my side for six years. I won't let you get dragged into my problems.""But..."Liam hesitated."Munskar won't let this go. He'll definitely find another way to force you."I didn't even blink."I know. I'm waiting for it."Just as I expected, it didn't take long before a heavy, urgent pounding echoed from the iron gate outside.Along with it came Mun

Munskar never expected that I had already prepared for this."What exactly do you want?""I don't want anything."I calmly lowered the glass vial and hung it back around my neck."I already told you. I'm not doing it. Now leave. Transfer Ophelia back to the Healing Grove in the city, and withdraw the order to shut down the Herbalist Guild. After that, we go our separate ways, and we leave each other alone.""No!"Timora screamed at the top of her lungs."My daughter is still in the Healing Grove fighting for her life. You have to save her!""That's your daughter, not mine."I gave her a cold glance."Ten years ago, when Vivian got nothing more than a small injury, Nora was dying in the emergency room. Back then, why didn't you ask Munskar to save the antidote for Nora?"Timora was speechless. Her lips pressed tightly together as tears streamed down her face. She turned to Munskar, her voice breaking as she cried."Munskar, look at her! She's doing this on purpose! She just

As soon as I finished speaking, the air froze.Munskar's laughter came to an abrupt stop. The smug satisfaction on his face hadn't even faded before it twisted into pure disbelief. He clearly never expected me to say something so reckless.Timora's face went pale. The hand clutching Munskar's arm tightened suddenly, her nails digging into his skin."Munskar, she is insane! A crazy witch like her will do anything! Vivian can't die!"She screamed without restraint.A dark, vicious look settled in Munskar's eyes. He glared at me and hissed through gritted teeth, "You wouldn't dare.""Try me."My voice remained calm."Nora has been waiting for me in the afterlife for ten years. I've lived long enough. If I can drag you and the one you love most down with me, it'll be worth it."I raised my hand and pulled the silver necklace from around my neck.Inside the tiny vial hanging from it was a drop of liquid, shimmering like a piece of morning dew trapped in glass."This contains con
