Noah

The attack kept replaying in my head, over and over. The ground covered with my brothers' bodies. The funeral pyre that Lucas, Eli and I had built. The terror when I realised the beast was coming for us too. We fought with everything we had, but we couldn't even see our enemy. Once it had me in its jaws, I knew it was over for me.

Strangely, though, right now all I felt was peace. I felt weightless. Was this limbo? Was I dead? It had to be, because I had never felt this good in my entire life. Every worry I had ever carried, every insecurity and every bit of pain, simply gone.

I felt like I was floating, but there was this strange warmth about the place I was in. I really hoped I was dead so I could stay in this warmth forever.

Suddenly, though, I felt a tingling sensation on my forehead and it spread throughout my body. It made the warmth even stronger and I fought to open my eyes to see where it was coming from.

My eyelids felt heavy, like it was an impossible task to open them, but I was determined to find the source. As the fog in my mind cleared even more, I realised it wasn't just tingling, it was actual electricity coming from my forehead. It pulled me awake.

What I saw and felt was even better than my limbo. It was an angel, my angel. Her beautiful face was looking at me with concern and I realised it was her hand on my forehead that had brought me back. Her straight, black hair framed her face as she looked at me. She had the most attractive full lips I had ever seen, and her eyes... her eyes were the most beautiful shade of green I had ever seen.

My beaten and dying lycan was also awake, and we were both staring at her. He didn't need to tell me, I already knew.

"Mate..." It whisper and she came closer to me to make sense of what I had just said. Could she not feel it too?

"Mate..."

And then the fog and darkness claimed me once more.

Again I felt the fog lifting and I knew she was close; I could feel her. I fought to open my eyes to find her; I needed to see for myself that I hadn't dreamed her up. Before I could completely wake up, the first thing I noticed was her smell. So she was a wolf, and she smelled like vanilla and honey, but... there was another scent to her that I couldn't quite identify.

My eyes finally opened, and she was even more stunning than I remembered. I was apparently in some kind of hospital and she was writing down notes while looking at the machines attached to me.

The more I looked at her, the faster my heart beat. She frowned and looked over at me as the machine started beeping faster. Her eyes finally landed on mine and I could feel myself smiling like an idiot. I didn't know if it was because I was high on my mate's smell or high on the drugs.

I tried to speak. I wanted to ask her name, but my throat felt like I had swallowed sand. She brought a glass of water to my lips and I drank. My lycan stirred awake too, which surprised me because of how banged up we were. I suppose he was also excited about meeting his mate, but strangely, we couldn't fully sense her wolf; it was like she was hidden somewhere.

She was looking at me intently, her eyes steady, and suddenly I forgot what I was going to say in the first place. I took her hand and placed it on my chest, then put my hand on top of hers. She lifted her hand to my cheek and all doubts disappeared; it was very clear to me that we both felt this.

"I knew I couldn't have dreamed someone as perfect as you." I told her, although this was more of an internal thought I had accidentally said out loud.

I vaguely noticed the lights turn on. She turned her head towards the door, breaking our connection, and I took the opportunity to keep admiring her. Her skin was fair and smooth and her eyes were a colour I had never seen before, so light they could look white in certain lighting. Her straight hair was cut to her shoulders and it looked thick. I couldn't wait to wrap my hand around it and..

"Is this a new way of checking his temperature, doc?" My train of thought was interrupted by none other than Eli's grumpy presence. I felt guilty that I hadn't thought to ask about them. He called her 'doc' and I realised.

"So you're the one who saved me, huh?" I said to her. My hand instinctively went up to hers, keeping her where she was.

"I merely operated on you. From what I hear, your friends here carried you all the way to the clinic from goodness knows where." Now I turned to look at both Eli and Lucas and it grounded me to our reality. We had been attacked and nearly killed, and we didn't even know by what.

"Don't be so humble, doc! We might have carried him, but when we got here, he was basically dead. You brought him back to us. Literally." Lucas told her with a big smile. He was like a little brother to me, but if he smiled at her any longer, I was going to break his other arm.

"I think it's getting rather late, isn't there somewhere you need to be?" Eli clearly didn't like her and I wasn't surprised. But if he continued to look at her like that, I was also going to have to break his other arm. I was about to growl at them to back off, but my angel spoke to me first.

"I'll be back tomorrow morning. For now, try to get some rest." Rest?! How could I get any rest knowing she wasn't in bed with me?!

"What? No! I'm coming with you!" I told her. Panic set in at the thought of her leaving, but also at the thought of whatever had attacked us coming here and me not being able to protect her.

"You need to rest and I need to go to our Alpha. She's called me into her office. I'll be back tomorrow morning. I promise." She stepped out of the room and all I wanted to do was follow her.

"What the hell, Noah?!" Eli was angry enough to dare yell at me.

"What do you mean 'what the hell'? She's my mate." I told him very calmly, knowing full well how much this was going to irritate him.

"WHAT!?" His scream was loud enough to wake everyone nearby, and his face grew redder with every passing second. But any complaint he might have would fall on deaf ears.

She was already mine.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I'm too shocked to look away.

VeraThe pyre stands in the center of a wide open field, ringed by trees. Tonight the moon shines brighter than usual, with nothing in the sky to block her light. The bodies of our fallen warriors lie wrapped in linen, placed with care upon the pyre. There are far too many of them. Each step forward makes my heart sink further.Noah and I arrive at the ceremony, and most of the pack is already gathered. I notice right away that Eli and Lucas are nowhere in sight. I turn to Noah to ask, but he already knows what I'm about to say."They'll come. They just weren't sure if we'd want them here after everything that's happened."That answer is enough for me. We move deeper into the crowd, and just like before, people part to let Noah and me through. We find an empty blanket on the grass and sit down. Noah speaks up, breaking my thoughts. "This is strange. Watching wolves from this close.""How so?" I ask, actually wanting to know. I never considered it before, but just as wolves grow up hea

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I meant every word

VeraI push the door open and find Noah sprawled across my bed, staring at nothing and deep in sleep. His breathing is gentle, without a care in the world. Seeing him like this brings a warmth to my chest. He's dressed in fresh clothes, probably brought by the warriors who share his build: dark blue jeans and a plain black t-shirt. I have to admit, nobody ever made plain look this good.I don't want to disturb him, so I creep to my bathroom and notice someone's been here. He must have showered and changed right in this room, waiting for me to return.I start filling the tub with hot water and healing herbs. That should be enough to work out the soreness in my muscles. My body doesn't mend as quickly as the rest of the pack because my wolf hasn't connected with me yet. That's why I've always had to be more careful than everyone else. It's what made me a skilled fighter: while the others didn't worry about their wounds because they'd be fine by morning, I had to think smarter and move f

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   My Alpha and her dirty, dirty mind.

VeraI make my way to the pack house, knowing Sofia will be on the top floor. As I walk the hallways, I catch people staring at me the same way they did back at the clinic. I'm not sure what to think about it, but honestly, I'm too tired to care. The day has been endless and it's not even close to being over. When I finally reach the Alpha's door, I pause. What if she's sleeping?*Come in,* her voice fills my mind. Sofia."The woman of the hour," she says gently as I push the door open. Her room is the biggest in the pack house, which makes sense. It's less of a bedroom and more of a private wing, with tall French doors stretching from floor to ceiling and a huge balcony beyond them. Her bed faces the northern wall, tucked between the two sets of doors.I walk toward her. She's propped up on the bed with the twins sleeping beside her, a pile of papers scattered across her lap."Alpha," I say, saluting her.We hold each other's gaze for a long moment, then drop the formality entirely.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I know I don't need to tell you this...

VeraMy legs quit on me the moment the surgeon's eyes find mine. I hit the floor hard, knees first, then palms. My heart is slamming against my ribs like it wants out. This can't be real. The only father I've ever had cannot be lying dead on that table.I drag myself closer, tears already building behind my eyes. But when I get near enough to see the face on the table, something doesn't add up.This isn't Doctor Owens.I turn my gaze up to the surgeon, hope flickering back to life inside me, as he walks around the table and crouches beside me. His eyes are kind, but there's a weight of grief sitting in them."Vera, I take it. No, this isn't Doctor Owens. This is Nathan. He was one of the warriors stationed at the border when the beast attacked."Together we look at the warrior's still body. The tears I'd been holding finally spill down my cheeks."As for Doctor Owens, his surgery went well. He's coming out of the anesthesia now in a recovery space we set up in his office."The crying

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   Time of death

VeraI lie there with my eyes shut, letting the last dregs of adrenaline drain out of me. My breath comes in ragged pulls, and a high whine sits in my ears from pushing my body past every limit I had. When my pulse finally starts to slow, I lift my lids and force myself upright. Every muscle screams in protest. The ones who had been in the clearing have all crowded around Noah. Eli. Me. And the beast. Now that it's out in the open, some stare at it with curiosity, others with plain fear. A few are bold enough to prod it with their toes, checking that it's truly gone. The thing doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. Just lies there, a heap of what used to be a nightmare.Noah is stretched out beside me, still wearing his lycan shape. I rest my palm against his brow and wait for him to open his eyes.We did it.We actually fucking did it.Someone in the crowd lets out a howl of pure joy, and it catches like wildfire. More howls follow, then more. I can't help but grin at the sound. Around me, t

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   The three of us together

VeraThe beast comes at me full speed and I swear I've never been so grateful for my ten-mile-a-day running habit. Without it, I'd be chimera food right about now. All those wolves tearing at it, all those lycans throwing themselves at its body, and still its only focus is me. It wants me dead. Nothing else matters to it.Then I hear something new. More wolves. Running hard from the direction of the packhouse. Within seconds, around fifty of them burst into the clearing, teeth bared and ready. They must be the ones who were guarding the other borders.I need to end this fast. We can't leave the borders open for long and I can't stomach losing any more of our people.I sprint toward the incoming wolves, scanning for their lieutenant. I spot him quickly and cut my way over to him. The beast will be occupied with this fresh wave of attackers for a few seconds. That's all I need."I need you to buy me time! I have to get that spear out of its eye!"My voice comes out desperate. I can see
