Vera

My rounds at the clinic began at seven in the morning, but I could not stand lying in bed and staring at the ceiling any longer. My thoughts were already making me anxious, so I threw the covers aside and headed for the shower.

I stayed beneath the hot water for a while, trying to clear my mind and make sense of everything that had been happening. The thought of looking into those hazel eyes again made my pulse race, yet there was also a strange heaviness that I could not ignore.

I reached the clinic a full hour before my shift and began getting everything ready for the day. Once I was done, I went to the cafeteria, where I found Sam waiting with a warm cup of tea.

I accepted it gratefully and made small talk with her while I waited for a suitable time to begin my rounds. When enough time had passed, I left the cafeteria and headed towards Noah's room.

The closer I got, the stranger things felt. For some reason, I could not sense him at all. That was enough to make me quicken my pace. I had not heard about any procedure scheduled for him today, and with his condition, he had no business walking around the clinic.

I pushed open the door. Eli was the only person inside, and he was already looking at me.

"He's not here."

My eyes went straight to Noah's bed. It had been made neatly, which told me he had been gone for some time.

I walked towards Eli, watching him carefully with every step. Strangely, there was no hostility coming from him this time.

"I can see that."

I picked up some supplies from the tray beside one of the beds and carried them over to him. He watched me without saying anything. I pulled one of the visitor's chairs closer and sat beside him so I could examine his wounds.

The dressings were a mess. I could only assume he had done this himself because I refused to believe one of our staff members could have done such a poor job, especially on purpose.

I took the scissors and reached for his arm.

Eli immediately became threatening, but I did not care. I held his arm and began removing the dressings, taking care not to catch his skin with the scissors. I could feel the tension in his body, but he did not try to stop me.

Once the dressings were off, I examined the half-healed wounds covering his arms. The other two Lycans were recovering much faster, and Eli should have been further along by now.

"You heal slower."

It was a statement, not a question.

"I'm old," he replied, his gaze fixed on my hands instead of my face.

I continued treating his wounds, cleaning each one before dressing it properly. When I reached the arm in the sling, he reacted slightly as I removed the makeshift support. I noticed immediately.

I examined the arm with my hands and quickly realised that it had been dislocated. Had he tried to fix it himself? Whatever he had done, it had not been done properly. His fracture had also been left untreated and was already healing in the wrong position.

I would have to speak to Dr. Owens about it.

"I need to put this back into place. Do you want something to bite down on?"

Eli clenched his jaw. I took that as a no. I also assumed he did not want any painkillers.

I extended his arm and placed one hand on his shoulder, being careful around the fracture. Then I began moving the arm slowly and gently, feeling my way through the process.

After a few seconds, I felt the familiar click beneath my fingers. His shoulder had slipped back into place.

The procedure was normally extremely painful, yet Eli showed no reaction. He was probably too proud to let a wolf see him in pain.

I sighed and shook my head.

"Keep the sling on for another couple of days. It should heal properly now. I'll have to speak to Dr. Owens about your fracture because it's been healing incorrectly."

He nodded.

My attention moved to his face. One of the wounds there still needed cleaning.

"Don't even think about it."

He looked directly into my eyes.

I stopped and sat back down. Crossing my arms and legs, I leaned into the chair and looked at him.

"It looks like shit, though."

He gave a short snort. I could not tell whether he was amused or irritated.

For a while, neither of us said anything. I continued staring at the wound he refused to let me touch, while he seemed equally interested in staring at me.

Then he spoke.

"So you really are his mate."

"So I've been told."

"But you don't feel it?"

There was so much hope in his question that it was almost amusing.

"Oh, no. I feel it. He's definitely my mate."

Whatever hope had appeared in his expression disappeared. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose with his fingers.

Neither of us spoke for some time.

Eli eventually turned his attention towards the window, staring out at the forest with a thoughtful expression. Whatever was going through his mind, he clearly had no intention of sharing it with me.

I got up to fetch some water. As I lifted the pitcher, a sudden, painful pinch struck the back of my neck.

I turned around immediately, one hand going to the base of my neck. My first thought was that Eli had done something to me, but he was still sitting in his chair, looking out of the window as if nothing had happened.

"What the f..."

I never finished. Red suddenly filled my vision.

The pitcher slipped from my hand and crashed onto the floor. Glass scattered everywhere, but I barely noticed.

Heat spread across my skin and travelled through every nerve in my body. It was unbearable, and before I could even cry out, my vision began to blur.

My legs gave way, and I crashed onto the floor. The last thing I remember is Eli rushing towards me and calling for help.

Then everything went black.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I'm too shocked to look away.

VeraThe pyre stands in the center of a wide open field, ringed by trees. Tonight the moon shines brighter than usual, with nothing in the sky to block her light. The bodies of our fallen warriors lie wrapped in linen, placed with care upon the pyre. There are far too many of them. Each step forward makes my heart sink further.Noah and I arrive at the ceremony, and most of the pack is already gathered. I notice right away that Eli and Lucas are nowhere in sight. I turn to Noah to ask, but he already knows what I'm about to say."They'll come. They just weren't sure if we'd want them here after everything that's happened."That answer is enough for me. We move deeper into the crowd, and just like before, people part to let Noah and me through. We find an empty blanket on the grass and sit down. Noah speaks up, breaking my thoughts. "This is strange. Watching wolves from this close.""How so?" I ask, actually wanting to know. I never considered it before, but just as wolves grow up hea

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I meant every word

VeraI push the door open and find Noah sprawled across my bed, staring at nothing and deep in sleep. His breathing is gentle, without a care in the world. Seeing him like this brings a warmth to my chest. He's dressed in fresh clothes, probably brought by the warriors who share his build: dark blue jeans and a plain black t-shirt. I have to admit, nobody ever made plain look this good.I don't want to disturb him, so I creep to my bathroom and notice someone's been here. He must have showered and changed right in this room, waiting for me to return.I start filling the tub with hot water and healing herbs. That should be enough to work out the soreness in my muscles. My body doesn't mend as quickly as the rest of the pack because my wolf hasn't connected with me yet. That's why I've always had to be more careful than everyone else. It's what made me a skilled fighter: while the others didn't worry about their wounds because they'd be fine by morning, I had to think smarter and move f

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   My Alpha and her dirty, dirty mind.

VeraI make my way to the pack house, knowing Sofia will be on the top floor. As I walk the hallways, I catch people staring at me the same way they did back at the clinic. I'm not sure what to think about it, but honestly, I'm too tired to care. The day has been endless and it's not even close to being over. When I finally reach the Alpha's door, I pause. What if she's sleeping?*Come in,* her voice fills my mind. Sofia."The woman of the hour," she says gently as I push the door open. Her room is the biggest in the pack house, which makes sense. It's less of a bedroom and more of a private wing, with tall French doors stretching from floor to ceiling and a huge balcony beyond them. Her bed faces the northern wall, tucked between the two sets of doors.I walk toward her. She's propped up on the bed with the twins sleeping beside her, a pile of papers scattered across her lap."Alpha," I say, saluting her.We hold each other's gaze for a long moment, then drop the formality entirely.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I know I don't need to tell you this...

VeraMy legs quit on me the moment the surgeon's eyes find mine. I hit the floor hard, knees first, then palms. My heart is slamming against my ribs like it wants out. This can't be real. The only father I've ever had cannot be lying dead on that table.I drag myself closer, tears already building behind my eyes. But when I get near enough to see the face on the table, something doesn't add up.This isn't Doctor Owens.I turn my gaze up to the surgeon, hope flickering back to life inside me, as he walks around the table and crouches beside me. His eyes are kind, but there's a weight of grief sitting in them."Vera, I take it. No, this isn't Doctor Owens. This is Nathan. He was one of the warriors stationed at the border when the beast attacked."Together we look at the warrior's still body. The tears I'd been holding finally spill down my cheeks."As for Doctor Owens, his surgery went well. He's coming out of the anesthesia now in a recovery space we set up in his office."The crying

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   Time of death

VeraI lie there with my eyes shut, letting the last dregs of adrenaline drain out of me. My breath comes in ragged pulls, and a high whine sits in my ears from pushing my body past every limit I had. When my pulse finally starts to slow, I lift my lids and force myself upright. Every muscle screams in protest. The ones who had been in the clearing have all crowded around Noah. Eli. Me. And the beast. Now that it's out in the open, some stare at it with curiosity, others with plain fear. A few are bold enough to prod it with their toes, checking that it's truly gone. The thing doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. Just lies there, a heap of what used to be a nightmare.Noah is stretched out beside me, still wearing his lycan shape. I rest my palm against his brow and wait for him to open his eyes.We did it.We actually fucking did it.Someone in the crowd lets out a howl of pure joy, and it catches like wildfire. More howls follow, then more. I can't help but grin at the sound. Around me, t

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   The three of us together

VeraThe beast comes at me full speed and I swear I've never been so grateful for my ten-mile-a-day running habit. Without it, I'd be chimera food right about now. All those wolves tearing at it, all those lycans throwing themselves at its body, and still its only focus is me. It wants me dead. Nothing else matters to it.Then I hear something new. More wolves. Running hard from the direction of the packhouse. Within seconds, around fifty of them burst into the clearing, teeth bared and ready. They must be the ones who were guarding the other borders.I need to end this fast. We can't leave the borders open for long and I can't stomach losing any more of our people.I sprint toward the incoming wolves, scanning for their lieutenant. I spot him quickly and cut my way over to him. The beast will be occupied with this fresh wave of attackers for a few seconds. That's all I need."I need you to buy me time! I have to get that spear out of its eye!"My voice comes out desperate. I can see
