Vera

After everything I had seen, I decided to keep exploring the mansion. The fear that had followed me since my death was slowly fading, giving me enough clarity to think instead of simply reacting to everything around me.

I could not be dead. At least, I refused to believe it. And if I truly was dead, then the Goddess had brought me here for a reason. Something told me this mansion still had answers waiting for me.

I was almost certain it had once belonged to Sofia's ancestors, but that only raised more questions. Why was I here? Why could I see things no one else could? Why was I being shown events from a past that should have been impossible for me to witness? Most importantly, what did any of this have to do with me?

I searched the mansion room by room, opening doors, checking windows and looking for anything that might offer a clue. Every room was empty, yet the house seemed to change as I moved through it.

The walls looked older. Furniture appeared to decay before my eyes, while dust gathered over surfaces that had seemed untouched only moments earlier. Paint peeled from the walls, and the grand mansion slowly became a forgotten ruin.

It felt like I was walking through time, passing through different periods of the house's history.

Eventually, I returned to the grand hall.

The paintings that had once decorated its walls were gone. Only pale marks remained where their frames had hung.

All except one. The Jade Waterfall.

I approached the painting and removed the cloth covering it. Despite its age, the colours remained vivid, and the waterfall looked almost alive beneath the painted moonlight.

"Why are you here?"

I reached out and touched the painted waterfall.

The mansion vanished. Once again, I was somewhere else.

Jade Waterfall.

I recognised it immediately, but this was not the waterfall I knew. The forest was much younger. Trees that had been hundreds of years old in my time were still little more than saplings.

A new moon hung above the forest, and the waterfall glowed with a strange green light.

Then I realised what was beneath the water.

Emeralds.

Thousands of green crystals filled the pool and seemed to glow from within. The sight was beautiful and almost impossible to believe.

I moved closer to examine them, but before I could reach the edge of the pool, something moved beneath the water.

A man emerged.

I recognised him at once.

Victor.

Water ran from his body as he rose from the pool, illuminated by the green glow of the emeralds. I remained where I was, watching him carefully.

The last time I had seen him, he had been able to see me. I still didn't know whether that was something I should fear.

Victor placed both hands on the surface of the water and began chanting in a language I couldn't understand. Strangely, the words felt familiar, as if some part of me knew them.

He closed his eyes.

Light appeared beneath his hands and spread across the pool. Within moments, the entire waterfall was glowing. The emeralds beneath the water shone brighter, filling the forest with green light.

I watched in silence.

There was something peaceful about what he was doing. It reminded me of the feeling I always experienced when I was alone in the forest, away from people and noise. Whatever Victor was doing, I could not sense any danger from him.

I had seen him twice, and neither time had he shown hostility towards me.

Perhaps I had been wrong to fear him. But could he really see me? No one else had.

Why was he different?

When the chant ended, the light faded and the waterfall returned to normal. I moved closer, wanting to ask him all the questions that had been filling my mind. Before I could speak, Victor looked directly at me.

There was no doubt now. He could see me. Then I noticed his eyes.

They were an incredibly pale green, almost the same colour as mine. I had never met anyone with eyes like that before. Depending on the light, mine could appear almost white.

I wondered if he was just as surprised to see mine.

I crouched until we were at eye level. Neither of us spoke. We simply studied each other, both filled with curiosity.

There was something strangely familiar about him.

I had never met Victor before, yet looking into his eyes made me feel as if I had known him somehow.

Before either of us could say anything, a figure appeared among the trees.

Victor turned towards him.

"It is done, Master Allen."

Victor looked at the man.

"Please, call me John."

"Very well."

The man stepped closer.

"The spell has been placed within the waterfall, specifically inside the emeralds beneath it. The water and emeralds extend through the underground waterways beneath this forest and throughout your territory."

He paused.

"No witch or warlock will be able to trespass on your lands."

My eyes widened.

A spell.

A witch.

A warlock.

Magic.

The stories I had always thought were legends were suddenly standing before me.

John looked at Victor with gratitude.

"I don't know how to thank you. When you first approached my father and me, we never believed you could accomplish something like this."

Victor climbed from the pool. He was still wearing his trousers, and when he stepped onto the ground, the water covering them vanished. His clothes dried almost instantly.

Another piece of magic.

John continued.

"I have to admit, we underestimated you."

"I am accustomed to that."

Victor put on his shirt and shoes.

John moved closer.

"If there is anything my family or I can ever do for you, tell me. I know magic like this comes at a cost, but our pack would never have survived without your help."

A pack.

So this was connected to werewolves. I moved closer so I could hear everything.

John continued, "Whatever you ask, if it is within my power, I will do it."

Victor looked at him for a moment.

"Many generations from now, I will come to the Allens and ask for a favour."

John looked concerned.

"What kind of favour?"

"One that cannot be refused."

I understood why John hesitated. Victor was not asking him to do something for himself. He was asking for a promise that would bind future generations of the Allen family.

After considering it, John finally nodded.

"I accept."

Victor gave him a small look of approval.

John still had one question.

"How will we know when the time comes? Will you be the one who delivers the request?"

"Remember my name. That will be enough."

John frowned.

"That's all?"

"That's enough."

For a moment, they looked at each other.

Then John asked, "What is your name, warlock?"

Victor turned towards him.

"Blackwood."

He paused before giving his full name.

"Victor Blackwood."

The name remained in my mind. Victor Blackwood.

I stood there watching a scene from a time that should have been impossible for me to witness. I didn't yet understand why I had been brought here or what Victor had to do with my own life. But somehow, I knew this name would not remain buried in the past.

Victor Blackwood was going to matter to me.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I'm too shocked to look away.

VeraThe pyre stands in the center of a wide open field, ringed by trees. Tonight the moon shines brighter than usual, with nothing in the sky to block her light. The bodies of our fallen warriors lie wrapped in linen, placed with care upon the pyre. There are far too many of them. Each step forward makes my heart sink further.Noah and I arrive at the ceremony, and most of the pack is already gathered. I notice right away that Eli and Lucas are nowhere in sight. I turn to Noah to ask, but he already knows what I'm about to say."They'll come. They just weren't sure if we'd want them here after everything that's happened."That answer is enough for me. We move deeper into the crowd, and just like before, people part to let Noah and me through. We find an empty blanket on the grass and sit down. Noah speaks up, breaking my thoughts. "This is strange. Watching wolves from this close.""How so?" I ask, actually wanting to know. I never considered it before, but just as wolves grow up hea

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I meant every word

VeraI push the door open and find Noah sprawled across my bed, staring at nothing and deep in sleep. His breathing is gentle, without a care in the world. Seeing him like this brings a warmth to my chest. He's dressed in fresh clothes, probably brought by the warriors who share his build: dark blue jeans and a plain black t-shirt. I have to admit, nobody ever made plain look this good.I don't want to disturb him, so I creep to my bathroom and notice someone's been here. He must have showered and changed right in this room, waiting for me to return.I start filling the tub with hot water and healing herbs. That should be enough to work out the soreness in my muscles. My body doesn't mend as quickly as the rest of the pack because my wolf hasn't connected with me yet. That's why I've always had to be more careful than everyone else. It's what made me a skilled fighter: while the others didn't worry about their wounds because they'd be fine by morning, I had to think smarter and move f

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   My Alpha and her dirty, dirty mind.

VeraI make my way to the pack house, knowing Sofia will be on the top floor. As I walk the hallways, I catch people staring at me the same way they did back at the clinic. I'm not sure what to think about it, but honestly, I'm too tired to care. The day has been endless and it's not even close to being over. When I finally reach the Alpha's door, I pause. What if she's sleeping?*Come in,* her voice fills my mind. Sofia."The woman of the hour," she says gently as I push the door open. Her room is the biggest in the pack house, which makes sense. It's less of a bedroom and more of a private wing, with tall French doors stretching from floor to ceiling and a huge balcony beyond them. Her bed faces the northern wall, tucked between the two sets of doors.I walk toward her. She's propped up on the bed with the twins sleeping beside her, a pile of papers scattered across her lap."Alpha," I say, saluting her.We hold each other's gaze for a long moment, then drop the formality entirely.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I know I don't need to tell you this...

VeraMy legs quit on me the moment the surgeon's eyes find mine. I hit the floor hard, knees first, then palms. My heart is slamming against my ribs like it wants out. This can't be real. The only father I've ever had cannot be lying dead on that table.I drag myself closer, tears already building behind my eyes. But when I get near enough to see the face on the table, something doesn't add up.This isn't Doctor Owens.I turn my gaze up to the surgeon, hope flickering back to life inside me, as he walks around the table and crouches beside me. His eyes are kind, but there's a weight of grief sitting in them."Vera, I take it. No, this isn't Doctor Owens. This is Nathan. He was one of the warriors stationed at the border when the beast attacked."Together we look at the warrior's still body. The tears I'd been holding finally spill down my cheeks."As for Doctor Owens, his surgery went well. He's coming out of the anesthesia now in a recovery space we set up in his office."The crying

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   Time of death

VeraI lie there with my eyes shut, letting the last dregs of adrenaline drain out of me. My breath comes in ragged pulls, and a high whine sits in my ears from pushing my body past every limit I had. When my pulse finally starts to slow, I lift my lids and force myself upright. Every muscle screams in protest. The ones who had been in the clearing have all crowded around Noah. Eli. Me. And the beast. Now that it's out in the open, some stare at it with curiosity, others with plain fear. A few are bold enough to prod it with their toes, checking that it's truly gone. The thing doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. Just lies there, a heap of what used to be a nightmare.Noah is stretched out beside me, still wearing his lycan shape. I rest my palm against his brow and wait for him to open his eyes.We did it.We actually fucking did it.Someone in the crowd lets out a howl of pure joy, and it catches like wildfire. More howls follow, then more. I can't help but grin at the sound. Around me, t

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   The three of us together

VeraThe beast comes at me full speed and I swear I've never been so grateful for my ten-mile-a-day running habit. Without it, I'd be chimera food right about now. All those wolves tearing at it, all those lycans throwing themselves at its body, and still its only focus is me. It wants me dead. Nothing else matters to it.Then I hear something new. More wolves. Running hard from the direction of the packhouse. Within seconds, around fifty of them burst into the clearing, teeth bared and ready. They must be the ones who were guarding the other borders.I need to end this fast. We can't leave the borders open for long and I can't stomach losing any more of our people.I sprint toward the incoming wolves, scanning for their lieutenant. I spot him quickly and cut my way over to him. The beast will be occupied with this fresh wave of attackers for a few seconds. That's all I need."I need you to buy me time! I have to get that spear out of its eye!"My voice comes out desperate. I can see
