LOGINVera
"Victor Blackwood."
The two men clasp hands, and that's the final thing I catch before I'm yanked away into another vision. Except this time, I know exactly what I'm looking at. This is happening now. I can see familiar wolves from our pack scattered along the northern border, heavily guarded and alert.
Then I spot it. A massive shape lurking at the edge of my sight. Calling it a wolf would be laughable. This thing is a monster, something stitched together from nightmares. Like one of those ancient chimeras from old stories. Its bulk alone makes your blood run cold, and the way its jaws work, snapping and gnashing like some enormous lion, tells me everything I need to know. This is a creature built for one purpose. Killing.
It's moving toward our line, and not a single wolf seems to notice. How the hell can they not see this thing? It's right there!
The beast picks up speed and slams straight into our wolves. Their howls of agony rip through me, and I'm screaming before I can stop myself.
"Look out! It's right there in front of you!"
Nobody hears me. Not one of them turns. My gut clenches with pure desperation. This has to be the same creature that went after Noah and his friends. I'm useless standing here. I spin around and sprint toward the pack house, pushing my legs as hard as they'll go.
If I can get back to my body, I can warn them. I can save them.
I make it to the pack house quicker than I expected. Maybe being in this form makes me faster. I take the stairs two at a time up to the clinic, trying to figure out where they would've put me. The last thing I remember is being with Eli. That's where I'll start.
Eli and Lucas are in their beds, talking in low voices. Noah isn't here. My body isn't here either.
Come on, Vera. Think. Where else would they have taken me?
I head to the nurse's station, praying I'll find my chart. When I get there, nothing. No chart. No record of me. Panic crawls up my throat again. We don't keep charts on dead people.
I keep moving, climbing to the second floor. The morgue records are up here. If I'm actually dead, I'll find proof.
As I pass the MRI room, something makes me stop. I sniff the air. Noah's scent. No mistaking it. I follow the trail, knowing in my gut that if I'm still alive, he hasn't left my side this whole time.
I walk into the room, and there I am. My body, hooked up to machines, wires everywhere. Noah is asleep next to me, curled on his side with one arm wrapped around me like he's guarding me even in sleep. I glance at the monitors. Everything looks stable. My body is fine, considering I've been unconscious.
Seeing him there, holding me, something warm spreads through my chest. It feels right. It feels like home. But I can't waste time enjoying this. I have to warn them.
I reach for my hand, and just like before, I start to feel weightless.
When my eyes open again, I don't feel light. I feel like I've been hit by a truck. How long was I out? Weeks, probably. I sit up fast and start ripping at the wires and tubes. The IV tears out of my arm and blood starts running down my skin. Noah jerks awake beside me.
"Noah, it's here. It's coming for you. You have to get out. You have to leave!"
"Whoa, Vera, slow down. What are you talking about?"
"I saw it, Noah! It broke through the border. It'll be here in minutes. You need to warn the others and go!"
"Okay, first of all, I'm not going anywhere without you." He grabs my arm, checking the blood. "Second, you probably just had a nightmare."
"For fuck's sake, listen to me! That thing that almost killed you and the others? It's on its way here right now. You HAVE to leave!"
I'm still weak, but I force myself off the bed and stumble into the bathroom. I yank on the scrubs I was wearing before I passed out. Or died. I still don't know which.
When I come out, Noah is just sitting there on the bed like nothing's wrong. Mate or not, he's being a complete idiot right now.
I can't wait for him. I have to warn everyone else.
I'm out the door and down the stairs. My muscles are screaming at me, but they're waking up fast. I reach the nurse's station. Empty. I head into the lycans' room and find Sam and Violet changing their bandages.
"It's here. You both need to leave. NOW."
They stare at me, confused but also relieved to see me awake. Violet takes a step toward me, and then the pack house alarm blares. The panic on their faces says everything. They know exactly what that sound means.
"Evac, now. We have a protocol. Stay calm and help the patients into the tunnels."
Noise erupts from outside. Sam and Violet move instantly. Everyone has a job to do, and nobody can afford to mess up.
The lycans start pulling on the clothes Sofia left for them, grabbing ration packs that were prepared ahead of time. Noah walks into the chaos.
"How did you know?" he asks.
"I saw it. That thing is going to kill every one of us to get to you three. You have to leave. Now."
"Wait, what do you mean you saw it?" Lucas steps toward me, and it hits me. None of them could see the creature. Only I could. They're going to want answers.
"Vera, Sofia needs you. She says you know where." Violet pokes her head through the door and disappears back into the madness outside.
Moon Goddess. If that means what I think it means... she can't be in labor right now. Not now.
VeraThe pyre stands in the center of a wide open field, ringed by trees. Tonight the moon shines brighter than usual, with nothing in the sky to block her light. The bodies of our fallen warriors lie wrapped in linen, placed with care upon the pyre. There are far too many of them. Each step forward makes my heart sink further.Noah and I arrive at the ceremony, and most of the pack is already gathered. I notice right away that Eli and Lucas are nowhere in sight. I turn to Noah to ask, but he already knows what I'm about to say."They'll come. They just weren't sure if we'd want them here after everything that's happened."That answer is enough for me. We move deeper into the crowd, and just like before, people part to let Noah and me through. We find an empty blanket on the grass and sit down. Noah speaks up, breaking my thoughts. "This is strange. Watching wolves from this close.""How so?" I ask, actually wanting to know. I never considered it before, but just as wolves grow up hea
VeraI push the door open and find Noah sprawled across my bed, staring at nothing and deep in sleep. His breathing is gentle, without a care in the world. Seeing him like this brings a warmth to my chest. He's dressed in fresh clothes, probably brought by the warriors who share his build: dark blue jeans and a plain black t-shirt. I have to admit, nobody ever made plain look this good.I don't want to disturb him, so I creep to my bathroom and notice someone's been here. He must have showered and changed right in this room, waiting for me to return.I start filling the tub with hot water and healing herbs. That should be enough to work out the soreness in my muscles. My body doesn't mend as quickly as the rest of the pack because my wolf hasn't connected with me yet. That's why I've always had to be more careful than everyone else. It's what made me a skilled fighter: while the others didn't worry about their wounds because they'd be fine by morning, I had to think smarter and move f
VeraI make my way to the pack house, knowing Sofia will be on the top floor. As I walk the hallways, I catch people staring at me the same way they did back at the clinic. I'm not sure what to think about it, but honestly, I'm too tired to care. The day has been endless and it's not even close to being over. When I finally reach the Alpha's door, I pause. What if she's sleeping?*Come in,* her voice fills my mind. Sofia."The woman of the hour," she says gently as I push the door open. Her room is the biggest in the pack house, which makes sense. It's less of a bedroom and more of a private wing, with tall French doors stretching from floor to ceiling and a huge balcony beyond them. Her bed faces the northern wall, tucked between the two sets of doors.I walk toward her. She's propped up on the bed with the twins sleeping beside her, a pile of papers scattered across her lap."Alpha," I say, saluting her.We hold each other's gaze for a long moment, then drop the formality entirely.
VeraMy legs quit on me the moment the surgeon's eyes find mine. I hit the floor hard, knees first, then palms. My heart is slamming against my ribs like it wants out. This can't be real. The only father I've ever had cannot be lying dead on that table.I drag myself closer, tears already building behind my eyes. But when I get near enough to see the face on the table, something doesn't add up.This isn't Doctor Owens.I turn my gaze up to the surgeon, hope flickering back to life inside me, as he walks around the table and crouches beside me. His eyes are kind, but there's a weight of grief sitting in them."Vera, I take it. No, this isn't Doctor Owens. This is Nathan. He was one of the warriors stationed at the border when the beast attacked."Together we look at the warrior's still body. The tears I'd been holding finally spill down my cheeks."As for Doctor Owens, his surgery went well. He's coming out of the anesthesia now in a recovery space we set up in his office."The crying
VeraI lie there with my eyes shut, letting the last dregs of adrenaline drain out of me. My breath comes in ragged pulls, and a high whine sits in my ears from pushing my body past every limit I had. When my pulse finally starts to slow, I lift my lids and force myself upright. Every muscle screams in protest. The ones who had been in the clearing have all crowded around Noah. Eli. Me. And the beast. Now that it's out in the open, some stare at it with curiosity, others with plain fear. A few are bold enough to prod it with their toes, checking that it's truly gone. The thing doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. Just lies there, a heap of what used to be a nightmare.Noah is stretched out beside me, still wearing his lycan shape. I rest my palm against his brow and wait for him to open his eyes.We did it.We actually fucking did it.Someone in the crowd lets out a howl of pure joy, and it catches like wildfire. More howls follow, then more. I can't help but grin at the sound. Around me, t
VeraThe beast comes at me full speed and I swear I've never been so grateful for my ten-mile-a-day running habit. Without it, I'd be chimera food right about now. All those wolves tearing at it, all those lycans throwing themselves at its body, and still its only focus is me. It wants me dead. Nothing else matters to it.Then I hear something new. More wolves. Running hard from the direction of the packhouse. Within seconds, around fifty of them burst into the clearing, teeth bared and ready. They must be the ones who were guarding the other borders.I need to end this fast. We can't leave the borders open for long and I can't stomach losing any more of our people.I sprint toward the incoming wolves, scanning for their lieutenant. I spot him quickly and cut my way over to him. The beast will be occupied with this fresh wave of attackers for a few seconds. That's all I need."I need you to buy me time! I have to get that spear out of its eye!"My voice comes out desperate. I can see
