Vera

I lie there with my eyes shut, letting the last dregs of adrenaline drain out of me. My breath comes in ragged pulls, and a high whine sits in my ears from pushing my body past every limit I had. When my pulse finally starts to slow, I lift my lids and force myself upright. Every muscle screams in protest.

The ones who had been in the clearing have all crowded around Noah. Eli. Me. And the beast. Now that it's out in the open, some stare at it with curiosity, others with plain fear. A few are bold enough to prod it with their toes, checking that it's truly gone. The thing doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. Just lies there, a heap of what used to be a nightmare.

Noah is stretched out beside me, still wearing his lycan shape. I rest my palm against his brow and wait for him to open his eyes.

We did it.

We actually fucking did it.

Someone in the crowd lets out a howl of pure joy, and it catches like wildfire. More howls follow, then more. I can't help but grin at the sound. Around me, the wolves begin to shift back, laughing and shouting at the top of their lungs. I keep forgetting how little they care about being naked.

I drop my gaze, cheeks warm, and turn my attention to Noah. He's watching me already, those black lycan eyes slowly bleeding back into the hazel I've come to love so much. He's about to shift when Lucas jogs over, human again, carrying clothes for his friends. I slap my hands over my eyes, still sitting on the ground, while Noah and Eli dress fast.

Then Noah's palms are on my cheeks, pulling my hands away from my face. His eyes hold so much love, and something else. Pride, maybe. More than anyone has ever aimed at me before.

"You did it, Vera. You fucking did it."

And before I can answer, he kisses me.

It's everything I ever imagined a kiss could be. More than that. Fireworks go off behind my eyes, and heat spreads through every inch of me. How did I ever think I could live a whole life without this?

I kiss him back harder, and something hot pools low in my belly. If we don't stop, I might honestly forget we're standing in a clearing full of pack members with a dead monster right there beside us.

Noah pulls back and presses his forehead to mine. We're both wrecked, bleeding, struggling to breathe. None of it matters right now.

With the beast dead on the ground and the pack cheering around us, it feels like someone lifted a mountain off our shoulders.

The crowd shifts all at once, and our heads turn. Noah helps me to my feet just as Sofia steps into the clearing, Alex right behind her, each of them holding a baby.

Her dress is ruined, blood dried along the hem. Her face is puffy, her hair a wild mess when it's usually perfect. And the twins, gods, they've clearly just been born. They haven't even been cleaned up yet. Sofia looks swollen, tear-streaked, and more than anything, weak.

"Brothers and sisters. There will be a time to celebrate. For now, we gather around the pyre and bring our warriors home."

Every face in the crowd falls. The joy of killing the beast had blinded us, for a moment, to what it cost. I think about our wolves on the ground, empty of life, empty of soul, and my stomach knots itself tight.

Her words do their job. The crowd breaks apart, obeying their Alpha. I stay where I am, watching her eyes sweep over the gathered pack. They land on me. The second our gazes meet, I can see she's about to cry. She won't let her pack see any more weakness. She turns and walks out of the clearing, Alex close at her side.

I look to the lycans. No words needed. They know to follow me. I let go of Noah's hand, guilt chewing at me for not thinking about what comes after a battle.

I decide to be useful and head for the clinic to see how bad things got.

When I walk in, my heart drops. Beds are full. Wolves are sitting on the floor waiting for someone to tend them. The elders, once doctors and nurses, have come out to help.

I push through the corridors. The clinic isn't just packed, it's chaos. People run in every direction with no clear plan. Where the hell is Doctor Owens?

I spot Violet working on a warrior with a gash so deep it nearly took his leg. She's stopped the bleeding, but he needs surgery fast.

"Where is Doctor Owens? Who's running the clinic?"

She looks at me, and there's pity in her eyes.

"He's in surgery."

Well. That's not strange at all. I give her a confused look, not getting the sorrow on her face.

"Vera," she says, taking my hand, "he is in surgery."

It takes a second for the words to land. This can't be happening.

"He heard what you were going to do. He wanted to be there, just in case. Just in case you needed him."

We share a long look. One I know too well. The odds aren't in his favor. Panic claws up my throat.

"Go. I've got this. O.R. 4."

I run. Through the halls, around the crowds, up the stairs, sprinting to the third floor. I burst into the surgery room, muscles burning, just as everyone is peeling off their gloves. And I hear it. That long, flat beep of the machine. No heartbeat.

Time of death, eighteen forty-two.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I'm too shocked to look away.

VeraThe pyre stands in the center of a wide open field, ringed by trees. Tonight the moon shines brighter than usual, with nothing in the sky to block her light. The bodies of our fallen warriors lie wrapped in linen, placed with care upon the pyre. There are far too many of them. Each step forward makes my heart sink further.Noah and I arrive at the ceremony, and most of the pack is already gathered. I notice right away that Eli and Lucas are nowhere in sight. I turn to Noah to ask, but he already knows what I'm about to say."They'll come. They just weren't sure if we'd want them here after everything that's happened."That answer is enough for me. We move deeper into the crowd, and just like before, people part to let Noah and me through. We find an empty blanket on the grass and sit down. Noah speaks up, breaking my thoughts. "This is strange. Watching wolves from this close.""How so?" I ask, actually wanting to know. I never considered it before, but just as wolves grow up hea

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I meant every word

VeraI push the door open and find Noah sprawled across my bed, staring at nothing and deep in sleep. His breathing is gentle, without a care in the world. Seeing him like this brings a warmth to my chest. He's dressed in fresh clothes, probably brought by the warriors who share his build: dark blue jeans and a plain black t-shirt. I have to admit, nobody ever made plain look this good.I don't want to disturb him, so I creep to my bathroom and notice someone's been here. He must have showered and changed right in this room, waiting for me to return.I start filling the tub with hot water and healing herbs. That should be enough to work out the soreness in my muscles. My body doesn't mend as quickly as the rest of the pack because my wolf hasn't connected with me yet. That's why I've always had to be more careful than everyone else. It's what made me a skilled fighter: while the others didn't worry about their wounds because they'd be fine by morning, I had to think smarter and move f

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   My Alpha and her dirty, dirty mind.

VeraI make my way to the pack house, knowing Sofia will be on the top floor. As I walk the hallways, I catch people staring at me the same way they did back at the clinic. I'm not sure what to think about it, but honestly, I'm too tired to care. The day has been endless and it's not even close to being over. When I finally reach the Alpha's door, I pause. What if she's sleeping?*Come in,* her voice fills my mind. Sofia."The woman of the hour," she says gently as I push the door open. Her room is the biggest in the pack house, which makes sense. It's less of a bedroom and more of a private wing, with tall French doors stretching from floor to ceiling and a huge balcony beyond them. Her bed faces the northern wall, tucked between the two sets of doors.I walk toward her. She's propped up on the bed with the twins sleeping beside her, a pile of papers scattered across her lap."Alpha," I say, saluting her.We hold each other's gaze for a long moment, then drop the formality entirely.

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   I know I don't need to tell you this...

VeraMy legs quit on me the moment the surgeon's eyes find mine. I hit the floor hard, knees first, then palms. My heart is slamming against my ribs like it wants out. This can't be real. The only father I've ever had cannot be lying dead on that table.I drag myself closer, tears already building behind my eyes. But when I get near enough to see the face on the table, something doesn't add up.This isn't Doctor Owens.I turn my gaze up to the surgeon, hope flickering back to life inside me, as he walks around the table and crouches beside me. His eyes are kind, but there's a weight of grief sitting in them."Vera, I take it. No, this isn't Doctor Owens. This is Nathan. He was one of the warriors stationed at the border when the beast attacked."Together we look at the warrior's still body. The tears I'd been holding finally spill down my cheeks."As for Doctor Owens, his surgery went well. He's coming out of the anesthesia now in a recovery space we set up in his office."The crying

  • The Wolf Doctor’s Forbidden Mate   The three of us together

VeraThe beast comes at me full speed and I swear I've never been so grateful for my ten-mile-a-day running habit. Without it, I'd be chimera food right about now. All those wolves tearing at it, all those lycans throwing themselves at its body, and still its only focus is me. It wants me dead. Nothing else matters to it.Then I hear something new. More wolves. Running hard from the direction of the packhouse. Within seconds, around fifty of them burst into the clearing, teeth bared and ready. They must be the ones who were guarding the other borders.I need to end this fast. We can't leave the borders open for long and I can't stomach losing any more of our people.I sprint toward the incoming wolves, scanning for their lieutenant. I spot him quickly and cut my way over to him. The beast will be occupied with this fresh wave of attackers for a few seconds. That's all I need."I need you to buy me time! I have to get that spear out of its eye!"My voice comes out desperate. I can see
