22. A stupid thing
The credits were rolling on the TV screen as the front door unlocked. Emma was drifting back from her sleep when Jamie’s face emerged before her, making her blink a couple of times to confirm it was indeed him.
“Hey,” She said, her voice groggy, as she sat up on the couch.
“You have a room to sleep in.” He said as he turned around to get rid of his shoes.
”I was waiting for you, I didn’t mean to fall asleep.” She said, rubbing her eyes.
He turned around to eye her with curiosity, “Why?” He said, as he walked to her in slow steps.
Shrugging her shoulders, she looked up at him, “Well, about my job of course.”

Emma gulped in apprehension, acutely aware of his hand burning against her skin. Drawing her so close to him, Jamie was trying to eliminate any distance between them, physical or psychological. Although his touch was foreign to her, it was comforting nonetheless. Hence, she felt more protected then, unafraid of being vulnerable in front of him. “I don't think we should do this anymore.” She said, sighing. “Do what?” “Live together.” She said, “Your father hates me, Jamie. He thinks I killed my own parents.” Emma’s eyes lowered, unable to face him. “You must have heard what happened..” she mumbled, “And you must have believed them too.”
