Caleb POV

I found a bar away from the touristy side of town and close to my motel as the sun was setting. The interior was dingy and grimy—the perfect place to go unnoticed. It was exactly what I was looking for.

“Give me a glass of whatever’s strongest,” I told the bartender as I sank onto a stool.

“That’ll be moonshine,” he said, taking down a bottle from the second shelf.

“Moonshine?” I asked with raised eyebrows.

“Corn whiskey,” he clarified. “Perfectly legal.”

It wasn’t the legality I ques

Caleb POVA few gasps of shock echoed through the air, but most were skeptical.“That’s quite the fantasy you’ve come up with,” Elijah said, laughing. Behind him, Tobias swayed groggily, but there was fear in his eyes.“It’s not a fantasy,” I said, remaining composed. I addressed the pack again. “You see, two of the people Elijah sentenced to death were my parents. He sent my father and his squadron into a battle he knew they would lose, and then he had Tobias poison my mother.”Elijah’s eyes widened, but he quickly recovered, donning a sympathetic expression.“Poor orphan Caleb,” he said, overdoing the compassionate tone. “I was aware your parents’ untimely and unfortunate deaths badly affected you, but if I had known your grief twisted your mind, I never would have encouraged you to join the pack protectors. I thought I was giving you a purpose, but I see now that I should have sheltered you.”I clenched my fists but held my nerve. I knew Elijah was trying to get a rise out of me to

Caleb POVWe waited until dusk to implement the strategy. That’s when the guards changed over, and darkness would give us the best cover. James was supposed to be on watch that evening, giving us the perfect opportunity to slip into the commune. Getting in would be easy. It was the rest that worried me. We had a lot of moving parts. The rest of us stayed back while James relieved the pack protector at the guard post. Muffled chatter came from inside the booth. I couldn’t make out the words, but the tone sounded neutral—friendly. Nothing to worry about. My heart beat too hard in my chest as the minutes ticked by.Finally, the guard left the small wooden building and strolled toward the commune. I motioned for everyone to wait until he was out of sight, and then I waited a moment more just to be sure the coast was clear.“All right,” I said in a low voice. “Let’s make this quick and quiet.”I led the small group through the entrance, and James joined us. It was only a short walk before

Josephine POVGrief and anger flashed across Jules’s face. Desiree gasped in shock, and James clenched his fists. None of them rose to Elijah’s defense.Frankie cleared his throat, his eyes downcast. “I ran when I should have stayed and fought—when I should have told the rest of the pack what Elijah and Tobias had done. I’m here today to set things right. The pack deserves the truth.”“He won’t get away with this,” Diana said, her amber eyes bright with passion. “We’ve been living under his thumb for too long.”There were nods of agreement. It was nice to see the women of the pack speak their minds. Their bravery lifted my spirits, but the pack wasn’t my first concern.“Do you have any news about Theo?” I asked, looking at Jules.“Not much.” He huffed out a sigh. “They’ve got him locked in Elijah’s house with guards on the inside. There are maybe two or three. I couldn’t get an accurate count without drawing attention to myself.”I chewed the inside of my cheek.“Elijah is obsessed wi

Josephine POVIt was strange being back in Kisatchie National Forest. So much had changed in five years, but the forest remained the same. I still found it beautiful and peaceful despite knowing it harbored my kidnapped son. That wasn’t the forest’s fault, though.Jules waited for us just off the road, stepping from behind the trees when Caleb parked the truck. He hadn’t changed much since I’d last seen him, his red hair standing out among the wolves he’d brought with him. More people had shown up than I expected. I thought we’d get two, maybe three. But I counted eight, Jules included. They even had two women with them. That was a pleasant surprise.Jules greeted Caleb with a bear hug, thumping him on the back with a flat hand. When he released Caleb, he turned to me.“Josephine, it’s good to see you again,” he said. He must have seen my skepticism. The last time we’d interacted, he’d dodged my questions about Caleb. “I’m sorry for how I acted all those years ago.”“You’re helping me

Caleb POVI gripped the steering wheel, my body tense as we drove through the Louisiana countryside. I scanned the road ahead in case we caught up to Duncan, but there wasn’t much hope of that. I reminded myself it was better to mount an offense at the commune, but even that was risky.Mentally, I ran through all the points of ingress at the village. I’d done a good job shoring up the defenses, but Duncan had been lax on security for a few years. It used to anger me, but now I am grateful. It made things easier. There were only a few places they could hide Theo, and I noted all the angles of attack. I couldn’t afford to fail.Josephine radiated tension from beside me. I wanted to reach out and calm her with my touch, but I didn’t know if she would welcome the gesture.“How are you doing?” I asked instead.“Fine,” she lied, fidgeting with the pendant. She hadn’t let go of it since she picked it up in the alleyway. “So, what’s the story with the mountain lion?”I shifted uncomfortably.

Josephine POVI paced the length of the shop, gripping my fleur-de-lis pendant. It protected the user from psychic intrusions and physical harm, but only if they wore it. Yesterday’s slip-up—when Theo lost it in the sand for an hour or two—could have been enough to put him in danger. And today, they merely had to break the chain to take him.Theo must be so scared.I choked back tears. I didn’t have time to fall apart. I had to be strong for Theo. Nothing else mattered.“Josephine,” Vivian said, approaching me with shaking hands. “I’m sorry I couldn’t get you to Theo in time. He was hidden from my sight until the pendant came off.”“It’s not your fault. You have nothing to apologize for,” I assured her. She looked almost as troubled as I felt. I knew she cared about my son deeply. I sucked in a shaky breath. “Can you tell me if we’ll get him back?”I wanted to take the words back immediately. It didn’t matter what Vivian said; I’d never give up on Theo. I had to believe I’d rescue him

Josephine POV“Caleb!” I called, but he walked away without another word, leaving me alone in the village square. The sun beat down on me, but I couldn’t feel its heat. Learning we were fated mates was a shock. I had misgivings about the mating ceremony but not about Caleb. I thought we had a real

Caleb POVI didn’t sleep well and not because I’d insisted Josephine stay in my bed while I took the short, lumpy couch. Even with the door closed, I could smell her desire. It had been there since I helped her dress and only grew stronger when she climbed into my bed. It should have felt intrusive

Josephine POV“I don’t need your help,” I said, trying to draw myself up to my full height and wincing as my side burned.“Sure, you don’t,” he drawled. He took me by the arm and led me to his cabin. I wished his touch didn’t feel so good. I desperately wanted to lean into his warmth. Even after he

Josephine POV I walked into my father’s house—I suppose it’s my house now—with bloodshot eyes and a gaping hole in my chest. Nothing had changed in the week I’d been gone. I was still alone, still grieving, but it felt so much worse. The cottage on the edge of my small town had never felt cramped
