Caleb POV

Three agonizing, will-testing days later, the wound on Josephine’s side was nothing but a light pink scar that would soon turn white. She was leaving in the morning, and I couldn’t wait to escape temptation though part of me wished she’d stay. As much as I’d tried to avoid her while she stayed with me, I was drawn to her. She was intelligent, free-spirited, and curious about the pack. Our ways were foreign to her, and she questioned our dynamics endlessly.

She unlocked the parts of me

Josephine POVI held Theo and watched Caleb go, my heart hammering so hard in my chest that I thought it might break through my ribs.“It was so cool, Mom. The bug had these orange legs and big eyes,” Theo said, sounding far away even though my fingers gripped his shoulders like a vice.“That sounds like an interesting bug,” I managed to reply, amazed that my voice didn’t shake. I turned to Theo’s nanny. “Hey, Bethany, would you mind taking Theo upstairs for a snack? I have some things to take care of in the shop.”“Sure,” Bethany said with an easy smile. Thankfully, she had no clue my life was crashing down around me. She would distract Theo from the storm of anxiety ravaging my heart and mind. Caleb had seen Theo. There was no hiding my son now. I’d seen the questioning look on his face and the shock that followed.“I’ll see you in a little bit, okay?” I said to Theo, who happily nodded as Bethany ushered him upstairs to our apartment. As soon as Theo was gone, I locked the shop doo

Caleb POV I walked away from Josephine in a daze. She was the last person I expected to run into. Her anger toward me was entirely misplaced—I’d been the injured party in our situation. But seeing her face and remembering what she looked like in the throes of passion was excruciating. I recalled what it felt like to touch her smooth skin and bury my face in her neck. I did my best not to think about that night. Josephine’s betrayal still stung, but so did the knowledge that I’d tasted something I would never have again. My demotion was making me soft. The lack of responsibility left too much time for my mind to wander. But I was in Delta Springs on a mission for the pack and myself. I needed to focus. The room where the psychic did her readings was painted a deep purple and filled with knickknacks in display cases. A woman with curly brown hair and astute eyes sat in the center of the space, a crystal ball on the table before her.Maybe she’s not the real deal.“Are you a psychic?” I

Caleb POV I arrived in Delta Springs in the early afternoon, exhausted and edgy after spending the whole day in a truck. I’d stewed on what I knew—or rather, didn’t know—for the entirety of the ride. I needed answers but had to find Frankie, and I hoped he could give them to me.The tourist trap of a town was far too crowded for November, and I had to settle for a room in a beat-up motel. But my lodgings didn’t matter. I wasn’t there for vacation.Tobias hadn’t given me any information about where I might find Frankie, but the town wasn’t huge, and wolves had a particular scent that was hard to miss—even among humans.I headed downtown, figuring it was the best place to start. Even if I couldn’t pick up a scent, I’d find out where the local watering holes were and ask around about businesses looking to hire day labor. If he was new in town, he might be hitting bars or seeking work. Elijah said he’d resurfaced in Delta Springs, but I didn’t know if he’d been there prior. Either way, I

Caleb POV Elijah released an angry puff of air from his nose, but he had nothing to reprimand. I was behaving as I was supposed to.“Many years ago, a pack member named Frankie Delacorte betrayed us and ran away. You know how I feel about wolves who don’t follow orders,” he said.I frowned, wondering why he was telling me. He didn't want to dole out punishment after all this time, right? I waited for him to continue.“Tobias had a vision, and apparently, Frankie has resurfaced in a coastal town called Delta Springs,” he said, still not explaining why I was involved.“I have seen only flashes; something is blocking the full vision,” Tobias chimed in, slurring his words. “Some magic.”I’d never known anything to block Tobias’s Sight before, but then again, I didn’t understand his magic in the slightest. He was the sole member of our pack with witch blood—the only way a wolf could use magic—and his herbs had robbed him of the ability to have children long ago. He kept the concoction a s

Caleb POV I sat in the guard post, having just completed my final perimeter check of the night. I was glad to be the only one on duty, even if I thought it was foolish. When I’d been the leader of the pack protectors, I always stationed two men on the night watch. But I hadn’t been the leader for five years. Why Elijah had replaced me with Duncan, of all people, was beyond me. I couldn’t think of a less suitable leader. It was likely because many of the men were loyal to me back then, and Duncan most certainly was not. If I’d had my pick, I would have put Jules in charge. He knew as much as me about strategy, and the rest of the men respected him. Duncan came from the Elijah school of leadership, commanding with force and punishment instead of integrity.I sighed and propped my feet on the table in front of me. I should be grateful I had a role in the pack protectors at all and hadn’t been thrown out of Moon Edge after Josephine left.I occasionally wondered if that wouldn’t have bee

Josephine POV “My granddaughter is going through a”—she pursed her lips, looking uncomfortable—“witchy phase. Why she can’t love ponies like other girls her age, I don’t know. Do you have anything appropriate for a five-year-old?”She looked almost apologetic for asking—a non-believer like most tourists who wandered into the shop, looking for voodoo trinkets to take home. I kept a whole selection of mundane crystals, symbols, and herbs just for them. It was as lucrative as the real stuff.“I’m sure we can find something.” I smiled. “Does she prefer the pretty, shiny stuff, or is she more into the macabre?”The woman grimaced; I had my answer.“My son put a skull and crossbones flag above her bed—inappropriate, in my opinion. But I’m just a grandmother. What do I know?” she said with a disappointed head shake.I didn’t bother to mention that a pirate flag wasn’t exactly witchy. To a five-year-old, a skull was a skull.“I think I know what’ll appeal to her,” I said, leading the woman t

Josephine POV“I don’t need your help,” I said, trying to draw myself up to my full height and wincing as my side burned.“Sure, you don’t,” he drawled. He took me by the arm and led me to his cabin. I wished his touch didn’t feel so good. I desperately wanted to lean into his warmth. Even after he

Josephine POVI was all set to leave when one of the pack protectors approached, a somber expression on his face. Josephine POVHe’d seen me naked before, but this was different. He looked at me with fire in his eyes, a primal need that echoed through my body. Josephine POV“Caleb!” I called, but he walked away without another word, leaving me alone in the village square. The sun beat down on me, but I couldn’t feel its heat. Learning we were fated mates was a shock. I had misgivings about the mating ceremony but not about Caleb. I thought we had a real
