“Your majesty,” her maid called from the door. The Lycan woman with soft brown eyes smiled warmly, holding the bundle in her arms. Her maid, Thea, was a reminder to her that not everyone in this land was like Kurnich. Most of them were just… People.“He’s awake.”
Ariadne's eyes softened, and she walked over to them.
“He slept well?” she asked, taking the bundle into her arms.
“Very well,” the maid nodded.
Ariadne moved the blankets back to reveal her sleeping son's face. He had her olive skin and Kurnich’s ears. She kissed her baby’s forehead. He wriggled and yawned awake, his baby blue eyes looking up at her.
“He’s going to make a handsome prince,” Thea said proudly.
“I’m sure,” Ariadne said dispassionately. All being well, her son would never know he was a prince.
“I’m sure he will need feeding soon,” Thea said.
“I’ll look after him,” Ariadne said. Thea smiled and closed the door.
For a moment, Ariadne was just allowed a quiet moment to stand with her son. Her baby boy. Her little North.
She wished she could love him more. Be… Maternal. But she knew her hardness served a purpose. Song, on the other hand…
“Our baby!” she cooed, trying to make Ariadne shift so she could hold him.
“Wait, wait, wait,” Ariadne growled, practically jogging back to her bed. Once she put North down, she let Song shift. She watched from their mind as Song sprang onto the bed and curled around their boy.
“He’s too cute,” Song said, snuggling and nuzzling North. The little boy cooed and wriggled, gripping at Song’s fur.
“He is…” Ariadne said softly. Her heart ached as she watched them interact.
“He’ll need milk soon,” Song said, as if to assure Ariadne that her being in the room was temporary.
“I know,” she said. “Let him enjoy his time with his wolf mama.”
Song practically purred and cuddled North, doting on him.
Ariadne let Song have her moment, letting herself float in their mind. She needed all the time she could to prepare herself to leave. Her wedding anniversary was coming into view. Almost a year away, but she had never had such a view of possible escape before.
She had the letters with information from Queen Astrea about the astronomer in the West of Lycan territory, who owed Astrea a favour and would take Ariadne and North in. From there, she could try to get to Leviathorp. If she and Song could keep North safe from rogues, they would be ok.
North let out a little whimper that grabbed Ariadne’s attention.
“He’s hungry now,” Song said softly. Ariadne shifted back, unbuttoning the top of her dress so she could breastfeed. North’s little mouth searched for what it needed…
“He’s not latching again,” Ariadne whispered.
“Give him a moment,” Song cooed.
“What if my milk is drying up? What if-” Ariadne replied, her grip on North tightening.
“Breathe,” Song whispered. “You know he’s got a bit of dolichocephaly from his father’s side. It’s going to make feeding that bit harder.”
“I know, I know…” Ariadne whispered.
North let out a little frustrated noise, and Ariadne’s heart clenched.
“He’s ok,” Song mumbled.
“He’s hungry,” Ariadne replied.
“He’s hungry, not starving. He’s safe,” Song said.
Ariadne tensed, her chest tight. North grumbled and grabbed at her chest, doing anything to get milk.
“Wait for it,” Song said softly. Ariadne nodded, but she winced as she tried not to cry. Then…
North let out a relieved sigh, and his body relaxed as he found his latch.
“See?” Song said.
“...Yeah…” Ariadne replied.
North drank greedily and happily, his frustration forgotten. It took Ariadne much longer to let her shoulders relax. Once he was done, she burped North and cuddled him on her bed.
“You worry so much for him,” Song teased.
“I’m allowed to be the one who worries,” Ariadne replied.
“Indeed,” Song replied. “But once we’re safe, we’re going to work on making you less of a worrier. Deal?”
Ariadne hesitated.
“Deal?” Song repeated.
“... Deal,” Ariadne said softly.
A hush fell over the room, only broken by North’s coos and small, happy noises.
Knock. Knock. Knock.
Ariadne looked up as Thea walked in again.
“Sorry to disturb you, ma’am,” Thea said. “A letter arrived.”
Ariadne nodded, taking the letter. Her expression hardened when she saw the stamp.
A white star surrounded by smaller blue ones.
It was the astronomer.
“...Thank you. You can go now,” Ariadne said. Thea bowed and walked out of the room.
Ariadne skimmed the letter. Useless drivel. Good. Nobody would suspect anything.
She walked over to the fire and held the letter up to the warmth. After a few moments, words began to appear on the backs of the pages.
Your majesty,Astrea is still missing. Passage to the west will become difficult in a few months when winter hits. Choosing to leave on your anniversary, or after, may be challenging.
Increased rogue activity.
Be safe.

Ariadne frowned. Why was rogue activity increasing?

For a moment, she saw her life flashing before her.All those missed lessons. The time she spent with Aurellia. The sensations she felt while touching Mikael…And then…She ducked down and rolled off of the runes on the ground. Her back slammed into the base of one of the pews behind her, and she let out a groan.“Clever little human,” the thing stood
[CW- This chapter contains mild body horror, feelings of unreality, and vomiting. She swallowed hard and forced herself to keep some modicum of calm.Fear would kill her.Panic would kill her. What wouldn’t kill her?She glanced around the room. She couldn’t actually be sure about the answer to that question.“... Fuck it,” she whispered and opened the mind link to Mikael.“Peggy? What the fuck is happening?” Mikael asked.“Get Eli in the mind link thing,” Peggy replied.“Wha-”“There are runes on the floor,” she replied. “You saw the stuff I saw in my head, that came up because I stepped on some runes on the floor. Eli knows magic stuff, right?”“... Yeah, they do…” Mikael said, and she could feel him starting to realise that she knew things. “Peggy, the mind link-”“I know,” she replied. “We can talk about it later, when I’m not in danger.”“... You’re righ
“This was the monastery?” Mikael asked. “The hell happened to it? I swear Alpha Claymore got a letter from them just before we left.” “He did,” Eli confirmed. “So what…” Mikael said, stepping forward. He immediately stepped back, and Peggy felt the wave of nausea surge through him. “The hell?” “Are you ok?” Peggy asked, looking worried. “I’m ok, I just, give me a minute,” Mikael said, beads of sweat forming on his forehead, his face ashen. “Nieve must have pressed on, past this point, to get that sick…” Eli said, watching Mikael’s reaction. “Think this is magic or poison?” Peggy asked, still keeping an eye on Mikael. “My guess? Both. It only seems to be when we cross a certain threshold, and it’s a strong, possibly emetic effect,” Eli said. “It’s bullshit, whatever it is,” Mikael growled. “Let me try…” Peggy said, stepping over where Mikael had been. “Wait-” he said, reaching out… But Peggy was fine. She glanced around, waiting for any effect. “Nothing…” she murmured. “So
Peggy stirred slightly as she awoke. She hadn’t had any strange dreams, which was a relief, as after the rogue attack and with the possibility of having a mate bond with Mikael, she hadn’t slept as well as she would have liked to. Usually, at this point, she would pull up her blanket and cuddle into it, enjoying the warmth before she had to go out into the cold. The further north the group went and the closer toward the werewolf countries of Arcterra they got, the colder the air got. She was used to the more mild days of Albiontё.But today, she was already very warm.Too warm. She blushed hard as she felt a soft breath against her ear. The smell of chewed mint and pine let her know immediately who this was.Mikael.As she came more into reality, she realised that he had his arm wrapped around her middle, his legs pressed against hers.He probably hadn’t gotten into this position on purpose, but still, it made her flustered. His back was pressed against her, and she could feel every l

She used her hairpins to mark areas on the map. Each sharp pin was the location of a reported rogue attack.Something wasn’t adding up.“You’re going to make your milk taste sour if you keep feeding him while you’re stressed,” Song cooed.“You know that’s just an old wives' tale,” Ariadne said, her fingers tapping out the staccato rhythm.“You haven’t even noticed he’s finished drinking,” Song chuckled. Ariadne glanced down at North. He gurgled and wriggled, no longer latched. She smiled, picked him up, and started patting his back to burp him.“It can’t be that sour if he’s happily guzzled down his meal,” Ariadne said.“I still don’t think you should be working while you feed him,” Song said.“Then I’d never get
“Has someone been hurt?” Ariadne asked, frowning.“Half the knighthood,” Commander Ruiz sighed. “A local holy site was attacked.”“Oh my,” Ariadne said, her eyes widening.“Indeed,” Commander Ruiz nodded. “We went to investigate, and we found the cause.”He led her inside the garrison, where the knights were being patched up. She noticed them all eyeing her warily as she walked in. She almost kicked a dagger that had been left on the floor. She frowned at it. The knights had evidently been in a rush… There were other discarded weapons, like a bow and a shield. Then Ariadne’s nostrils burned with the smell of blood and…Turpentine.“A rogue?” Ariadne asked. Several men looked up at her, eyes wide. “This far south?”“Aye,” Commander Ruiz sighed. “We don’t know how-”“Your majesty,” a younger lycan knight spoke. Commander Ruiz glared at the knight. “You know of these things?”“Yes,” Ariadne nodded. “I suppose they aren’t something most Lycans are exposed to.”“That’s right,” Commander Ru
