Running would only make the bond burn hotter.

Riven stood in the courtyard as night fell heavy over the stronghold. "We move tonight. The hidden forest keep is our only chance to buy time before those three packs arrive."

Thorne checked the saddles on two horses his face lined with worry. "Alpha this is risky. The forest trails are full of threats. Sable's scouts could be anywhere."

Lucien stood nearby still in chains but his green eyes showed no fear. "You think distance will quiet the bond? It will only scream louder when we separate."

Riven stepped close and grabbed the chains. "I do not care what the bond wants. You stay alive until I decide otherwise. Mount up. Thorne you ride ahead with five men. Clear the path."

Thorne nodded but hesitated. "What if they hit us in the trees? The prisoner slows us down."

"He stays with me," Riven said voice hard. "Law and bond both demand it. Now ride."

They set out under the moonlit canopy the forest closing around them like a living trap. Trees loomed tall and shadows danced between branches. Riven rode beside Lucien their horses side by side. The chains had been loosened enough for riding but not enough for escape.

"You are quiet traitor," Riven said after a long stretch of silence. "Planning your next lie?"

Lucien glanced over his shoulder. "No lies. Just facts. Moving me changes nothing. The Hollow Moon does not need walls to reach you."

"Save your breath," Riven growled. "I have heard enough stories. Focus on staying in the saddle."

Thorne's voice carried back from up ahead. "Alpha the trail narrows here. Stay tight. I hear movement in the brush."

Riven tensed hand on his sword. "Everyone alert. If Sable's men show themselves we end them fast."

Lucien leaned closer as much as the horse allowed. "Your wolf is restless. I feel it through the bond. It wants to protect me again."

"Protect you?" Riven scoffed. "It wants to tear you apart same as I do."

A low chuckle came from Lucien. "Keep telling yourself that. The pull says different."

The group pushed deeper into the woods. Branches whipped past and the night air grew colder. Thorne slowed his horse. "Hold. Something is wrong. Too quiet."

Before anyone could answer arrows whistled through the trees. One struck a rider beside Thorne dropping him with a cry.

"Ambush!" Riven shouted drawing his blade. "Form up!"

Chaos exploded. Dark figures burst from the undergrowth at least a dozen ambushers armed with swords and axes. They wore no colors but their shouts made their purpose clear.

"The prisoner is ours!" one attacker yelled. "Take him for Sable!"

Thorne swung his sword blocking a blow. "Alpha they came prepared. Get the prisoner back!"

Riven urged his horse forward slashing at the nearest enemy. "Lucien stay behind me. Do not try anything."

But the bond surged as more attackers closed in. Pain flared in Riven's head and Lucien's at the same time. An ambusher broke through the line swinging an axe straight at Riven's back while he fought two others.

Lucien moved fast. He leaped from his horse chains snapping with sudden unnatural strength. Power crackled around him like moonlight turned solid. He slammed into the attacker taking the axe hit on his own shoulder but driving the man to the ground with a burst of energy no normal prisoner should possess.

"What are you?" Riven roared cutting down his opponent and spinning toward Lucien.

Lucien stood breathing hard blood on his shoulder. "Not what you think. Now fight with me not against me."

Thorne yelled from nearby. "More coming from the left! Alpha your flank!"

Riven charged but the bond flared brighter than ever. Their minds touched. For one terrifying moment they fought as one. Riven felt Lucien's power flow into him guiding his strikes. Lucien moved in perfect sync with Riven's thoughts. They became a whirlwind together. Riven's blade met an enemy at the same instant Lucien's chained hands cracked another across the jaw with enhanced force.

"Left side now," Lucien called out voice urgent.

Riven pivoted without thinking blocking the attack Lucien had foreseen. "Right behind you. Duck!"

Lucien dropped low as Riven's sword whistled over his head taking down another ambusher. The shared connection made them unstoppable for those few heartbeats. Raw power surged between them terrifying in its strength.

Thorne fought his way closer eyes wide. "Alpha what is happening? You two move like one beast."

"Shut up and fight," Riven barked but even he felt the strangeness. The bond had merged them completely for that brief moment. Their wolves ran together in perfect harmony.

The last ambushers broke and fled into the trees shouting curses. "The bond makes them monsters! Tell Sable we need more men!"

Silence fell over the trail except for heavy breathing and the moans of the fallen. Riven dismounted and grabbed Lucien by the arm. "Explain that power. No prisoner fights like that."

Lucien winced from the wound but met his eyes. "It is part of what they did to me as a child. The experiments gave me something extra. I used it to save your life just now."

Thorne approached wiping blood from his blade. "He did save you Alpha. I saw it. That axe would have split your spine."

Riven released Lucien's arm but stayed close. "You expect thanks? This only proves you are more dangerous than I thought."

Lucien stepped nearer their faces close in the moonlight. "Dangerous because I can help you. The bond showed us how strong we are together. Deny it and we both lose."

Riven's breath came fast. The shared moment still buzzed in his veins. "I decide what we are. Not the bond. Not you."

Thorne cleared his throat. "We should keep moving. The hidden keep is not far but more could come."

They remounted and pushed on through the forest. The night felt heavier now. Trees whispered overhead and every shadow seemed alive.

Lucien rode beside Riven again. "You felt it back there. Our minds linked. Your wolf did not want me dead. It wanted me at your side."

"Talk less," Riven muttered. "Save your strength for the keep."

"But you need to hear this," Lucien pressed. "The ambushers were just the start. The real enemy is already inside you Riven."

Riven turned sharply. "What did you say?"

Lucien whispered the words soft but clear as they rode deeper into the trees. "The real enemy is already inside you."

The forest swallowed their words but the warning hung in the air like smoke. The hidden keep waited ahead yet the true danger traveled with them bound by blood and moonlight

Truth would either break Riven or force him to face the monster inside.Riven slammed the heavy door of the private chamber locking it behind him. Lucien stood chained in the center of the room torchlight flickering across his lean frame. The air felt thick with tension and the constant pull of the mate bond."Start talking," Riven demanded stepping close enough to see every detail in Lucien's green eyes. "No more games. No more fragments. Who killed the heir and how did you get away with it?"Lucien met his gaze without flinching. "I did not kill him Riven. I found him dying. I tried to save him from the Hollow Moon."Riven laughed sharp and bitter. "The Hollow Moon? What nonsense is this? You expect me to believe some shadow killed the strongest bloodline while you played hero?"Thorne stood by the wall arms crossed. "Alpha this sounds like more lies to save his neck. Press him harder.""I am telling the truth," Lucien said voice steady. "The heir lay there already fading. No claw m

Proximity would either save them or tear them apart piece by piece.Riven stormed into the war room with Lucien chained at his side the heavy iron links clanking with every step. Ancient law left him no choice. The mate bond demanded the prisoner stay close or the pain would cripple them both. Maps and battle plans covered the long oak table while Thorne and a handful of loyal alphas waited with tight faces."Keep him right here," Riven ordered shoving Lucien into a chair near the head of the table. "No one touches him but me."Thorne shifted uncomfortably his eyes flicking between them. "Alpha is this wise? Bringing the traitor into strategy talks?""Wise or not the law binds me," Riven snapped sitting down heavily. "Now speak. What do we know of Sable's movements?"One of the alphas a stocky man named Garrick cleared his throat. "Her riders hit the outer scouts at dawn. She calls for your removal claiming the bond clouds your judgment."Lucien sat quietly at first chains resting on

The north fractured in a single night and no one could stop the bleeding.Messengers rode out from the summit hall before dawn their horses kicking up dust as they carried the shocking news to every corner of the twelve packs. By midday alphas gathered in tense circles across the territories voices rising in heated debate. Riven Kaelthorn stormed through the main keep his boots echoing on the stone floors. He had not slept. The fresh mate mark on his neck still burned like a brand reminding him of the traitor waiting below.Thorne Blackwood met him in the corridor his scarred face grim. "Alpha the reports are coming in fast. Three packs have already declared against you. They say the goddess bond proves you are compromised."Riven stopped short fists clenched. "Compromised? I built this alliance with blood. Who dares speak against me?"Thorne glanced around then lowered his voice. "Sable Voss for one. She sent word from the shadow ridge. Claims the mark makes you weak unfit to lead. H
