LADY AQUINE

The dim, silent air of the private chamber smelled of ozone, silver-toxin, and fading life.

I sat in the high-backed velvet chair beside Rurik's bed, my hands clasped tightly in my lap as I stared at my son's pale, motionless face. For six agonizing months, the Alpha of the Larkspur Pack had been trapped in this waking death. His chest rose and fell only by the steady rhythm of the machines surrounding him. His fierce, golden wolf eyes remained locked behind closed lids.

I reached out, my fingers trembling as I smoothed a lock of dark hair from his forehead.

"Wake up, my boy," I whispered to the quiet room, the weight of the entire pack pressing heavily on my chest. "Your pack is bleeding."

Suddenly, a sharp, violent series of beeps shattered the silence.

I jolted upright, my blood running cold. The steady, flat monitor beside his bed spiked violently. The green line jumped, a rapid, frantic rhythm echoing off the stone walls. His heart rate, dormant at thirty beats per minute for months, surged to eighty, then ninety.

"Rurik!" I gasped, leaning over his chest. His fingers twitched once against the white linen sheets. A sudden, electric charge swept through the chamber, so strong it made the fine hairs on my arms stand on end.

"Guards!" I barked, my voice echoing through the heavy silver-reinforced doors. "Get Dr. Aris in here now!"

The silver doors burst open, and Dr. Aris rushed into the room, his medical kit in hand, two assistant medics hot on his heels. He immediately checked the glowing monitors, his eyes widening in complete shock as he pressed a stethoscope to Rurik's broad chest.

"His heart rate has doubled, Lady Aquine," Aris breathed, his fingers flying over the diagnostic screen. "His brain wave activity is flaring in the temporal lobe. Something just jolted his dormant wolf spirit."

"What caused it?" I demanded, my hands clenching into fists. "Is the poison clearing?"

Aris scanned the room, then looked up at the stone ceiling, his brow furrowing deeply. "No. The toxin is still in his bloodstream. Something in his immediate external environment sparked this reaction. Lady Aquine, has anyone new entered this wing? Has anyone with a distinct, high-tier aura walked past his doors?"

I didn't answer him. I turned on my heel and stepped out into the guarded corridor, calling for the head housekeeper.

Greta approached immediately, bowing her head. "You called for me, Lady Aquine?"

"Greta, who has been on this floor in the last ten minutes?" I asked, my voice deadly serious. "Who passed through this hallway?"

"No one unauthorized, my Lady," Greta replied calmly. "The surrogacy candidates have just arrived at the pack house. My staff finished guiding them to their assigned rooms on the guest floors just moments ago."

My eyes narrowed. "The candidates. One of them triggered this."

I turned back to Dr. Aris, a cold, desperate resolve settling into my bones. "We run an immediate compatibility test. Bring every single candidate down to this corridor, one by one. Have them walk within three feet of Rurik's doors. I want to know whose aura woke my son."

Ten minutes later, the dimly lit corridor outside the Alpha's chambers became a silent execution ground for expectations.

Greta lined the she-wolves up at the far end of the hallway. High-ranking noble females from the strongest bloodlines stepped forward one by one. A pristine alpha-line female from the Ironfang pack walked past the guarded doors.

Inside, the monitors remained dead flat. Sixty beats per minute.

Another noble female stepped up, her heavy floral aura filling the hall. Nothing.

My heart sank lower with every failed attempt. Aris stood by the open door, shaking his head gently at each passing candidate.

"Next," I commanded, my patience wearing thin.

A girl stepped out from the back of the line. She wore a simple jacket, her dark hair falling loosely around her shoulders. She held herself straight, but I could smell no domineering wolf scent on her. Nothing at all.

"Elira Montrose," Greta whispered beside me. "From the Nightswirl pack. She is wolfless, my Lady."

"Wolfless?" I scoffed, turning to send her away.

Elira took a step forward. The moment her foot crossed the three-foot mark outside Rurik's silver doors, a deafening alarm sounded from the medical monitors inside.

The green line on the screen spiked into a frantic, jagged mountain. Rurik's heart thundered at one hundred and twenty beats per minute. A thick, suffocating wave of raw, electric energy burst from inside the room, knocking the breath straight out of my lungs.

Dr. Aris gasped, dropping his tablet. "Lady Aquine! Look at the brain activity!"

I rushed back into the chamber. The monitors were flashing bright crimson. Rurik's chest was heaving with deep, ragged breaths, his pulse hammering against his throat.

Outside, Elira stood frozen in the doorway, her eyes wide, her hand pressed flat against her chest as if she felt the exact same violent pulse tearing through her own body.

"Bring her in!" I ordered, pointing directly at the wolfless girl. "Now!"

Two guards ushered Elira into the center of the chamber. As she took three steps closer to Rurik's bed, the chaotic spiking on the monitors instantly smoothed out into a strong, rhythmic, unbelievably stable pulse. His frantic brain waves settled into a deep, harmonious hum.

Aris stared at the screen in utter disbelief. "It's her. She isn't just triggering him, Lady Aquine. Her presence is stabilizing his core aura. She is holding his wolf back from slipping into the abyss."

I looked from the glowing monitors to the pale, wolfless girl standing beside my son's bed. She didn't have a roaring beast, yet she held the key to the Alpha's soul.

"Greta," I said, my voice leaving no room for argument. "Prepare a bed in this chamber. Miss Montrose stays inside the Alpha's quarters tonight."

ELIRA

The chamber was bathed in soft, purple shadows.

I lay on the small daybed set up just a few feet from Rurik's high mattress, my eyes closing as exhaustion finally claimed my body, my breathing turning slow and steady.

Across the short distance, Rurik lay still in his physical body, but the moment I drifted into sleep, the thin veil between realms dissolved completely.

A thick, silver fog rolled across my mind.

I opened my eyes to find myself standing in a dark, ash-covered forest. The tall, silent pine trees stretched into a blood-red sky. Cold wind whipped my hair across my face, but I felt no fear. Only a powerful, magnetic pull drew me toward the center of the woods.

A low, guttural growl echoed from the shadows behind a massive oak tree.

I turned slowly.

Out of the gloom stepped a massive, shadowy wolf. His fur was as black as an endless night, his broad shoulders easily towering over my head. His posture was terrifying, lethal, and majestic, but his eyes caught my breath.

They glowed with a bright, terrifying, ancient gold.

The shadowy beast prowled closer, his giant paws sinking silently into the misty ground. I stood my ground, my heart hammering against my ribs, unable to move, unable to look away.

The wolf did not snap his jaws. He did not attack.

Instead, he stepped directly in front of me, bowing his massive head until his cold, wet nose gently nuzzled the soft skin of my throat. A sharp, electric shudder shot through my entire soul, burning away every trace of coldness left by Dorian's betrayal.

The wolf leaned closer, his warm breath brushing against my skin, and a deep, command-tone voice resonated directly inside my mind.

You finally came.

I pulled my single suitcase out, stepped onto the cobblestone driveway, and looked up.The Larkspur pack house was breathtaking. It was a sprawling, stone estate that rose into the twilight sky like an ancient fortress, refined by arched windows, grand balconies, and polished marble pillars that oozed power. It did not look like a regional pack headquarters. It looked like a royal palace, built to hold the territory's most formidable bloodline.Around us, uniform-clad staff members moved with absolute purpose. Servants carried luggage, guards rotated posts, and caretakers swept the grand stone steps. None of them paused to chatter. None of them stared. ELIRAThe words hung in the suffocating space between us, heavy and toxic, floating through my hazy mind.We were never mates. I lied.I stood frozen, staring at Dorian's handsome face, searching for a twitch, a flicker of guilt, anything that would reveal this was just a twisted, sick joke. Nothing came. His dark eyes remained cold, smooth, and completely devoid of warmth. Beside him on the bed, Naya casually adjusted her dark hair, a small, satisfied smirk resting on her plush lips."I..." My throat was dry, the words scraping out like rust. "I was summoned today. To the Larkspur pack house. For Alpha Rurik's surrogacy selection."I waited for the shock. I waited for Dorian's wolf aura to flare in protective rage at the thought of another pack taking me.Neither of them blinked.Naya let out a soft, amused hum, examining her manicured nails. Dorian merely tightened the belt of his silk robe, leaning his shoulder against the doorframe with infuriating composure."Oh," Dorian said, hi
