The heavy armored vehicle slowed to a smooth stop, its engine humming low before cutting off completely.
The enforcer opened my door, stepping back to grant me space. I pulled my single suitcase out, stepped onto the cobblestone driveway, and looked up.
The Larkspur pack house was breathtaking. It was a sprawling, stone estate that rose into the twilight sky like an ancient fortress, refined by arched windows, grand balconies, and polished marble pillars that oozed power. It did not look like a regional pack headquarters. It looked like a royal palace, built to hold the territory's most formidable bloodline.
Around us, uniform-clad staff members moved with absolute purpose. Servants carried luggage, guards rotated posts, and caretakers swept the grand stone steps. None of them paused to chatter. None of them stared. The entire household ran with military precision, silent and disciplined.
The lead enforcer guided me through the massive oak double doors into the grand foyer.
A crowd of young she-wolves already stood clustered near the center fountain. They were dressed in fine silks, tailored coats, and gleaming jewelry, their postures erect and proud.
The heavy, oppressive weight of dominant wolf scents hung thick in the warm air. Smoky cedar, burnt copper, wild jasmine. They were nobles, bloodline candidates brought in from high-tier packs across the territories.
As I walked toward the group, several head turns followed my movement. Nose-tips flared, catching my scent. Or rather, the absence of one.
Sneers rippled across the line of noble candidates. Their eyes narrowed in silent disdain as they picked up on my submissive, muted aura. To them, a female without a roaring beast was an insult to the room.
"Well, well. Look who made the cut," a voice snickered from the left.
I turned my head slightly. It was Tanya, a high-ranking noble from Nightswirl. Her golden eyes flicked over my cheap jacket and simple suitcase with pure amusement.
"Don't bother standing too close to her, girls," Tanya announced loudly, her voice echoing off the high ceilings for everyone to hear. "She's from my pack. Elira Montrose. A complete dud. She doesn't even have a wolf."
Low gasps and quiet, derisive chuckles rippled through the gathered surrogacy candidates. A few she-wolves shifted away from me, pulling their silk skirts closer as if my wolfless state was a contagious disease.
I didn't blink. I didn't respond. I kept my chin level, keeping my hands resting neatly over my suitcase handle. Their arrogance was noise, nothing more.
Before Tanya could say another word, sharp, rhythmic footfalls clicked against the stone floor.
An older woman stepped into the foyer. She wore a tailored black dress, her gray hair pinned back into a flawless bun. Her posture was straight as a blade, her dark eyes sweeping over the room with enough silent authority to instantly choke out the giggles.
"Silence," the woman commanded, her voice calm, sharp, and echoing through the space. "I am Greta, head housekeeper of the Larkspur estate."
The room went dead quiet.
"You are here for one purpose," Greta continued, her stern gaze locking onto each candidate in turn. "To offer your bloodline to Alpha Rurik's legacy. While you remain under this roof, you will adhere to our rules. No fighting. No unauthorized wandering. No disrespect to the household staff. Anyone who fails to uphold the dignity of this estate will be escorted off the grounds immediately."
Greta gestured to a line of attendants waiting near the grand staircase.
"You will now be escorted to your assigned quarters," Greta declared. "Assignments have been made based on pack tiers and arrival rosters."
The attendants began calling out names, leading groups of noble she-wolves up the central staircase toward the main guest wings.
I waited quietly as the crowd thinned. Eventually, only three of us remained standing by the fountain. Myself, a quiet female with dark hair, and another girl who kept her eyes glued to the floor.
An attendant stepped forward, giving us a polite nod. "Due to a capacity spillover in the primary guest suites, the three of you will be housed in the upper west wing. Please follow me."
We followed the attendant past the main stairs, taking a private, enclosed stone staircase that wound upward through the heart of the estate.
We climbed past the second floor, then the third. As we reached the corridor of the fourth floor, the air suddenly changed.
A strange, electric pressure rippled through the hallway.
My feet stumbled slightly as an invisible pulse hit my chest. It wasn't a physical wave, nor was it a scent. It felt like a low, vibrating charge of raw lightning passing straight through the floorboards, sinking into the soles of my shoes, and pulling at something deep within my soul.
My heart thumped violently against my ribs. My breath caught in my throat as my skin prickled with intense heat.
I stopped in the middle of the hallway, turning my head to look at the heavy, silver-reinforced double doors down the corridor. They were guarded by four armed Enforcers standing in absolute silence, their faces grim and vigilant.
"Is something wrong, Miss Montrose?" the attendant asked, pausing a few steps ahead.
"What... what is down that hallway?" I whispered, my palm instinctively pressing flat over my racing heart. The energy pulling at me was magnetic, heavy, and suffocatingly familiar, yet I had never felt anything like it in my life.
"That area is strictly restricted," the attendant replied firmly, stepping in front of my line of sight. "We must keep moving to the upper level."
I swallowed hard, forcing my legs to move, though every instinct I had urged me to turn back toward those silver doors.
We climbed one more flight of stairs, emerging onto a quiet, high-ceilinged floor lined with single guest rooms. The attendant unlocked the doors for the other two females before stopping at the very end of the hall.
"This is your room, Miss Montrose," she said, handing me a heavy brass key.
I took the key, opened the oak door, and stepped inside. The room was elegant, decorated in deep blues and warm wood, with a wide window overlooking the pine forests surrounding the estate.
I set my suitcase down near the bed and closed the door behind me.
The moment the latch clicked shut, the sensation returned tenfold.
The floor beneath my feet hummed with a quiet, undeniable warmth. The electric charge I had felt in the lower corridor surged upward, wrapping around my limbs, vibrating through my bones like a distant, echoing call.
I crossed the room and sat on the edge of the mattress. I pressed my palm flat against the wooden floorboards, feeling the faint, rhythmic pulse throbbing directly beneath me, beating in perfect sync with my own heart.
ELIRAMy eyes flew open, my chest heaving as I pulled a ragged gasp of air into my lungs. The lingering scent of ash and pine from the misty forest burned in the back of my throat. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, echoing the terrifying, gold-eyed beast's voice inside my skull. You finally came.I tried to pull back, but a sudden, suffocating pressure anchored me in place. My gaze snapped downward. I wasn't on the small daybed near the wall. Somehow, while trapped in that intense, suffocating dream, I had moved across the room in my sleep. I was standing right at the edge of the grand bed, and a long, broad hand was wrapped like a steel vice around my right wrist.Rurik's hand.I froze, my breath catching. His skin was surprisingly warm against mine, the pulse in his thick wrist beating in erratic, heavy thumps. I stared at his face, getting my first close look at him without the panic of the earlier tests.Alpha Rurik was lethal, even in repose. He had a harsh, sculpted jawl
LADY AQUINEThe dim, silent air of the private chamber smelled of ozone, silver-toxin, and fading life.I sat in the high-backed velvet chair beside Rurik's bed, my hands clasped tightly in my lap as I stared at my son's pale, motionless face. For six agonizing months, the Alpha of the Larkspur Pack had been trapped in this waking death. His chest rose and fell only by the steady rhythm of the machines surrounding him. His fierce, golden wolf eyes remained locked behind closed lids.I reached out, my fingers trembling as I smoothed a lock of dark hair from his forehead."Wake up, my boy," I whispered to the quiet room, the weight of the entire pack pressing heavily on my chest. "Your pack is bleeding."Suddenly, a sharp, violent series of beeps shattered the silence.I jolted upright, my blood running cold. The steady, flat monitor beside his bed spiked violently. The green line jumped, a rapid, frantic rhythm echoing off the stone walls. His heart rate, dormant at thirty beats per mi

ELIRAThe words hung in the suffocating space between us, heavy and toxic, floating through my hazy mind.We were never mates. I lied.I stood frozen, staring at Dorian's handsome face, searching for a twitch, a flicker of guilt, anything that would reveal this was just a twisted, sick joke. Nothing came. His dark eyes remained cold, smooth, and completely devoid of warmth. Beside him on the bed, Naya casually adjusted her dark hair, a small, satisfied smirk resting on her plush lips."I..." My throat was dry, the words scraping out like rust. "I was summoned today. To the Larkspur pack house. For Alpha Rurik's surrogacy selection."I waited for the shock. I waited for Dorian's wolf aura to flare in protective rage at the thought of another pack taking me.Neither of them blinked.Naya let out a soft, amused hum, examining her manicured nails. Dorian merely tightened the belt of his silk robe, leaning his shoulder against the doorframe with infuriating composure."Oh," Dorian said, hi
ELIRAThe thick, gold-embossed envelope sat on the cluttered desk like a weapon waiting to detonate. It had my name on it. Elira Montrose.I stared down at the crisp parchment, my pulse throbbing steadily in my throat. I had spent the past three hours alone with my thoughts in Dorian's office, filing his company's quarterly tax forms, when his secretary entered and handed me the letter."This came from the Montrose house, ma'am," she said, a question in her eyes that she tried to hide. I recognised the seal on the envelope almost immediately. Anybody would recognise that seal.
