ELIRA

Dr. Aris found me the next morning near the medical wing, his face drawn with exhaustion after what had clearly been a sleepless night monitoring Iris's condition.

"She's stabilizing," he said quietly, before I could even ask. "Slowly. Whatever dose she received, it was smaller than what was used on Alpha Rurik. Enough to nearly kill her, but not calculated for a comatose result. I believe it was meant to look like a natural collapse, something easily explained away and quickly forgotten.

ELIRAI followed at a careful distance through the winding stone passage, staying far enough back to remain hidden but close enough to track the enforcer's path as he half-dragged, half-marched Niar up through the estate's lower levels toward the surface. My heart hammered with every step, torn between the desperate need to intervene and Niar's own desperate insistence that I get the ledgers to safety instead, that whatever happened to her mattered less right now than the proof we'd finally managed to find.I hated it. I hated every second of watching her disappear up ahead of me, her arm still gripped tight in the enforcer's hand, her spine straight despite the obvious fear I could see in the tense line of her shoulders. She held herself the way I'd learned to hold myself in Laron's study, chin level, giving nothing away that she could help. They emerged from the lower passage into the estate's main corridors, and I pressed myself into the shadow of a doorway, watching as the enforce

ELIRAWe moved as quickly as we dared through the ritual chamber, pulling ledgers from the shelves and stuffing them into the deep pockets Niar had sewn into her own dress weeks ago, back when careful preparation for exactly this kind of danger had become second nature to both of us."How many can you carry?" Niar whispered, already reaching for a third volume, her hands moving fast despite the tremor I could see in her fingers."As many as we can without slowing ourselves down enough to get caught," I said, tucking the two heaviest ledgers, the ones containing the names of every missing candidate and the explicit entry naming me as the final subject, against my ribs alongside everything else I'd been collecting since arriving at this estate. My mind kept circling back to the entry with my name in it, the cold, clinical certainty of it. Compatibility exceeds all previous subjects by significant margin. Whatever that meant exactly, it meant Laron had already decided I would work where

RURIKThe horror of what Elira had found reached me through the bond in fragments, disjointed and raw, images and half-formed thoughts bleeding across the connection faster than I could fully process them.A ritual. A basin of silver liquid, rippling on its own. My uncle's name written beside mine on a faded page, recipient, as though I were nothing more than a resource to be reallocated once he'd finished draining whatever he needed from a wolfless girl he'd already decided to sacrifice.I lay there in the dark, the fog pressing at the edges of my mind the way it always did, and forced myself to hold onto every fragment reaching me, refusing to let the sedation drag me under before I understood what she'd found.Rurik. Elira's thoughts came through sharp with panic, the careful composure she usually maintained through our connection cracking under the weight of what she'd just read. He's planning to use me. Some kind of ritual, tied to my bloodline, my wolflessness. He wants to trans

ELIRAI'd expected, after everything we'd already found, some deeper version of the lab we'd stumbled into weeks ago. More cages. More vials. The same cramped clinical horror, just bigger, just worse. What I found instead was larger. More deliberate. And somehow worse, exactly because of how carefully it had been built rather than just expanded. The chamber stretched wide beneath the estate, its ceiling arched high enough to swallow the strange blue light glowing faintly from crystals set directly into the stone walls, like captured moonlight frozen in place. I stood in the doorway a moment, just staring, trying to take it all in.Long tables lined one side of the room, covered in equipment I didn't recognize, glass containers filled with liquids ranging from pale amber to deep, poisonous silver, all of it arranged with a precision that spoke of careful, patient work rather than hurried experimentation. Shelves rose along the far wall, stacked with leather bound ledgers. Dozens of the

ELIRAI still remembered the map from Beatrix's room even without carrying it anymore. By the second day after finding the bloodied shoe, Niar and I had the route memorized well enough to walk it in near total darkness.Neither of us had slept much the night before. I'd lain awake staring at the ceiling beams, running the map through my head over and over, tracing the marked passage until I could see it behind my closed eyes. Niar had come to my door before dawn, already dressed, her face pale but set."I couldn't sleep either," she said, before I could ask.We waited for the guard rotation to shift, the same short gap I'd used before to find the shoe. Standing pressed against the cold stone near the stairwell entrance, I counted the seconds under my breath, the way I'd learned to count things as a child when I needed to keep from falling apart."Now," Niar whispered, and we moved. We slipped down the enclosed stairwell toward the fourth floor's restricted section, past the level wher

  • The Wolfless Bride No One Wanted, Except the Alpha   Chapter forty-five: The Bloodied Shoe

ELIRAI went to the east wing alone that night, against every piece of careful advice Dr. Aris had given me, against Niar's protests when I'd told her my plan over a hurried, whispered conversation in the courtyard, against every instinct screaming that this was exactly the kind of reckless action that had made three candidates before me simply vanish. But Wilhelmina's terrified eyes stayed with me, and the strange symbol burned like a brand in my pocket, and I understood, with a certainty I couldn't quite explain, that whatever she'd seen, whatever had frightened her enough to risk everything just to warn a near-stranger, mattered more than my own careful caution. The east wing corridor sat as still and silent as I remembered it, the silver-reinforced doors guarding the restricted area beyond looming heavy in the darkness. I'd learned enough of the guard rotations over the past weeks to know this particular hour offered the thinnest coverage, a brief gap between shift changes when th
