LOGINTHE EDGE OF DISGRACE
The rain began as a dull, cold drizzle, turning the dark ritual ash on the courtyard stones into a thick, clinging mud.
Elena did not run this time. She couldn't.
Every step away from the center of the courtyard felt as though she were dragging anchor chains behind her. Her dress was ruined, soaked through with rainwater and filthy mud, her knees raw and bleeding from the stones. The silent, suffocating humiliation burned far hotter than any physical pain.
She made her way toward the narrow rear archway, desperately seeking the shadowy solace of the servant quarters where she could hide her broken face from the world.
"Going somewhere, little ghost?"
The voice slashed through the sound of the falling rain.
Elena froze, her hand resting against the cold stone of the archway.
Seleste stepped into her path, flanked by her two ever-present handmaidens. Seleste did not seem to care that the rain was ruining her pristine, pale silk gown. Her eyes sparkled with a dark, cruel triumph that had been building for twenty-one years.
"Look at you," Seleste purred, taking a slow step forward. She reached out with a manicured finger, lifting a strand of wet, mud-caked hair from Elena’s cheek, only to flick it away in disgust. "A true Valcrest heiress, isn't that what you called yourself? The firstborn daughter of the Alpha."
Elena kept her eyes glued to the floor. "Please, Seleste. Just let me pass."
"Let you pass?" Seleste laughed, a sharp, ringing sound that echoed down the stone corridor. Her handmaidens joined in, their giggles dripping with mockery. "Why should I? You’ve spent your entire life occupying space that didn't belong to you. You dragged our pack's name through the dirt in front of Heir Cassian. You embarrassed Father."
"I didn't ask for any of this," Elena whispered, her voice trembling.
"No, but you exist, and that is embarrassment enough," Seleste hissed, her smile vanishing, replaced by a sudden, terrifying sneer.
Without warning, Seleste shoved Elena hard against the stone wall.
Elena’s head cracked against the granite. Pain exploded behind her eyes, and she slumped onto her knees in a deep puddle of muddy water.
Seleste stepped over her, leaning down close to her ear, her breath warm against Elena's freezing skin. "Do you know what Father said after he walked out? He said he’s going to strip you of the Valcrest name by tomorrow morning. He's sending you to the borderlands as an outcast servant. You won't even be a noble's daughter anymore, Elena. You'll be lower than the stray dogs."
One of the handmaidens tossed a heavy wooden bucket of dirty wash water over Elena’s head.
The icy, filth-laden water drenched her completely, blinding her, burning her nose and throat as she gasped for air. She collapsed entirely into the mud, coughing, shivering violently as the girls stood over her, laughing and kicking spray into her face.
"Stay in the dirt where you belong," Seleste spat, nudging Elena’s shoulder with the sharp tip of her expensive shoe. "You never had a wolf. You never had a future. You are nothing."
The footsteps faded into the distance, accompanied by lingering echoes of cruel laughter.
Elena lay flat in the mud, her face pressed against the wet stone floor. The rain beat down mercilessly on her back.
She didn't cry anymore. The tears had run dry. Inside her chest, the profound, agonizing grief began to turn into something else—something cold, dense, and unnaturally heavy.
You are nothing.
The words echoed in the dark silence of her broken mind.
And then, deep down in the dark, forgotten depths of her marrow, a sudden, violent pulse vibrated.
It was not the gentle warmth of a wolf. It was not the spark of a mortal beast.
The air around Elena’s motionless body suddenly stopped moving. The falling raindrops within a three-foot radius of her began to freeze mid-air, levitating in tiny, glittering specks of ice. The muddy water soaking her clothes turned into thick, dark frost that spread across the flagstones like spiderwebs.
A dark, rhythmic thrumming vibrated from her chest—a sound like a heavy war drum beating beneath the earth.
"Are you ready to stop begging..."
The voice returned, no longer a faint whisper, but a terrifying, resonance-filled roar that rattled her ribs from the inside out. It sounded ancient, monstrous, and filled with a cold, absolute hunger.
"...and start taking what is yours?"
Elena slowly opened her eyes.
Her pupils were no longer dark brown. Deep within her irises, a terrifying, obsidian ring of dark fire flickered into life.
She did not answer with words. She simply tightened her bloodied fingers into the mud, and for the first time in twenty-one yea
rs, the girl without a wolf smiled.
Sleep was an impossible luxury.Elena sat on the edge of her narrow cot, her knees pulled tight against her chest, her dark eyes fixed on the heavy wooden door of her small quarters. The memory of the tribunal chamber—the whispered plots, the cold betrayal of her father, and the cruel triumph in Lucinda’s eyes—burned in her mind like a open flame. They were going to throw her into the borderlands the second Alpha Kaelen left. She knew the borderlands; it was a barren, deadly wasteland swarming with rogue beasts and bloodthirsty mercenaries. For a wolfless girl, it was a guaranteed death sentence.I cannot stay here, she thought, her pulse hammering against her ribs. I will not wait for them to haul me out in chains like an animal. With quiet, desperate urgency, Elena moved around her dark room. She gathered her few meager belongings—a faded cloak, a small pouch of dried herbs, and a worn silver locket that had belonged to her late mother—packing them into a small canvas bag.Outside he
In the glittering streets of Blackhaven City, news traveled like wildfire. While neon skyscrapers lit up the ocean night and high-stakes casinos overflowed with human mobsters and wealthy elites, the city's underworld whispered about only one place: the central estate.Don Dante’s main stronghold, a massive black stone fortress perched on the highest cliffs, was famous for its absolute isolation. Outlying mansions, ports, and luxury hotels across Blackhaven employed hundreds of human workers, but the Don’s personal estate was untouchable. No female worker was ever allowed inside past sunrise. The women who tried to cross that threshold never lasted long, driven out by strict security or by the terrifying six-year-old heir who ruled the corridors. So when word began to leak from the guards that a strange young woman had been given a permanent post inside the main house, the city’s underground erupted with gossip."A female maiden? In the Don’s personal wing?" a high-society woman whispe
The grand tribunal chamber of the Valcrest fortress had never felt so suffocating.Heavy, dark velvet drapes blocked out the dim evening light, leaving the immense stone room illuminated only by the flickering, unnatural glow of blue-flamed torches. The scent of crushed nightshade, burning bone dust, and ancient herbs hung thick in the air, making every breath taste bitter and metallic.Every elder of the pack sat in elevated stone tiers surrounding the ritual circle. Pack warriors stood shoulder-to-shoulder along the perimeter, their hands resting nervously on the pommels of their silver blades. The silence was absolute, heavy with a terrifying, unspoken dread.Alpha Adrian sat on the main throne, his knuckles white as he gripped the armrests. Beside him, Lucinda kept her posture stiff, her eyes gleaming with dark anticipation, while Seleste hovered nearby, her ribs still bruised from the corridor shockwave. And standing near the arched entryway, silent and imposing as a statue of obs
Seleste did not just run—she scrambled through the high arched corridors like a frightened animal, her torn crimson dress dragging through the dirt, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. She burst through the heavy mahogany doors of her mother's private chambers, slamming them shut behind her and leaning against the wood, her whole body shaking violently.Lady Lucinda stepped out from behind her velvet dressing screen, dropping her silver hairbrush in shock. "Seleste! What in the Goddess's name happened to you? Look at your gown! Look at your hair!""Mother..." Seleste choked out, her face deathly pale, tears of genuine terror spilling over her lashes. "Mother, she... she has become a monster! Look at what she did to me!"Lucinda rushed forward, grabbing Seleste by the shoulders and frowning deeply as she inspected her daughter's frantic state. "What are you rambling about? Who did this?""Elena!" Seleste shrieked, her voice cracking. "Elena did this to me!"Lucinda stared at h
The silence that settled over the courtyard was suffocating. One by one, the pack members began to disperse, casting fearful, uncertain glances over their shoulders. Alpha Adrian had already retreated into the shadows of the grand hall, his head held low, crushed beneath the weight of his own humiliated pride. Cassian marched away without looking back, his jaw clamped tight, while Seleste and her mother scurried through the rear doors like venomous snakes forced back into their den.Soon, only the falling rain remained.Elena stood alone in the center of the vast stone circle. The heavy iron chains lay discarded at her feet, cold and silent against the wet flagstones. Her wrists were raw, her simple tunic soaked through, yet she did not collapse. The elevating words of the sovereign ruler still echoed through her mind, wrapping around her bruised spirit like a shield of warm iron.At the top of the grand stairs, Alpha Kaelen Vane turned to leave. His dark cloak fanned out behind him, h
The stillness that descended upon the courtyard was absolute. Not a banner rustled; not a breath was drawn.Alpha Adrian cleared his throat, stepping toward the balcony railing with an uneasy smile. "Alpha Kaelen... is there a problem? If the banishment of a defect offends your sight, we can have her dragged out through the rear gates immediately."Kaelen did not blink. His obsidian eyes remained locked on the shivering, chained girl kneeling in the mud below."I am speaking to all of you," Kaelen said, his deep, velvety baritone carrying effortlessly across the vast expanse of stone. "Why would a leader banish his own flesh and blood?"Adrian’s jaw tightened. He glanced nervously at the nobles around him before finding his footing. "She is wolfless, my Lord. She has been useless for twenty-one years. She brings no strength to our bloodline, offers no power to our pack, and holds no value. Keeping her here is an insult to the Valcrest legacy.""Yes! Exactly!"Seleste stepped forward on
