Chapter 5: Are you inlove with her?

The words hit Rita so hard that, for a second, she genuinely thought she had heard him wrong. "I want a divorce."

Silence.

Rita stood in the middle of their bedroom, staring at Philip as though he had suddenly begun speaking a language she didn't understand.

Rita blinked slowly. "What?"

Philip's expression didn't change. "I said I want a divorce."

Her fingers slowly curled at her sides. "No." Her voice came out barely above a whisper. "No, you didn't."

Philip exhaled through his nose, already looking tired. "I don't want this marriage anymore, Rita."

The words settled heavily between them. Rita stared at him. "Why?"

Philip walked toward the window and stood with his back partially turned to her. Outside, the city stretched beneath the glass, alive with movement.

"I think we've both known for a while that this marriage isn't working."

Rita let out a small, disbelieving laugh. "We've both known?"

Philip glanced at her over his shoulder.

"Don't do that."

"Do what?"

"Turn this into something dramatic."

Her mouth fell open. Something dramatic. Her husband had just asked for a divorce, and he was telling her not to be dramatic.

Rita swallowed the lump rising in her throat. "Then explain it to me, Philip. Because apparently, I'm the only one standing here who didn't know my marriage was ending."

His jaw tightened slightly. "You've been unhappy."

"I've been unhappy?"

"You complain constantly about my work."

Her brows pulled together. "Philip—"

"You complain that I'm never home. That I'm always in meetings. That I travel too much. That I don't spend enough time with you."

His voice remained calm, controlled. Too calm.

Like he was discussing a business problem instead of ending their marriage.

"You knew who I was before you married me," he continued. "My work has always demanded my time. I run several companies, Rita. I have thousands of employees depending on decisions I make every day. I cannot abandon my responsibilities because you want me home for dinner."

Rita felt something twist painfully inside her chest. "That's not what I said."

"But that's what you meant."

"No." Her voice rose. "I said I missed my husband!"

Philip went quiet.

Rita took a step toward him. "I wasn't asking you to abandon your companies. I wasn't asking you to stop working. I wasn't asking you to sit around the house and stare at me all day."

Her eyes burned. "I wanted you to make time for me."

His expression hardened. "And I told you that my time isn't always mine to give."

That hurt. God. That hurt.

Rita looked away for a second, blinking rapidly. Then she laughed. It was a quiet sound. Broken. "So that's it?"

Philip didn't answer.

"You're divorcing me because I wanted my husband to actually behave like a husband?"

"That's not the only reason."

Her head snapped back toward him. Of course, there was more. Rita's chest tightened. "Blair."

Philip's face changed almost imperceptibly. Rita laughed again, but this time there was no humor in it.

"Blair."

"Don't start."

"Oh, I'm starting."

Philip turned fully toward her. "Rita."

"No. You don't get to stand there and tell me not to start when you asked me for a divorce barely an hour after Blair walked into this house."

"Blair has nothing to do with—"

"Don't lie to me!"

Her voice cracked through the room.

Philip's jaw tightened. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then he said quietly, "You haven't made things easy for her."

Rita stared at him. "What?"

"You heard me."

"No. I heard the words coming out of your mouth. I just can't believe you actually said them."

Philip's gaze remained fixed on hers. "Blair is grieving."

"And?"

"And she's carrying my late brother's child."

Rita went still.

Philip continued. "She has nowhere else to go for now. She's staying here, and I've asked you to make her comfortable."

Rita's lips parted. "You asked me to make her comfortable?"

"Yes."

"And what exactly does that mean, Philip?"

"It means treating her with decency."

Her face changed. "Are you accusing me of treating her badly?"

"I'm saying you've refused to take proper care of her."

Rita actually stepped back. For a moment, she could only stare. Then she laughed.A sharp, disbelieving laugh. "Take care of her?"

"Rita—"

"No, say it again. I want to hear you."

His expression darkened.

"You've made her uncomfortable since she arrived."

"Because I didn't personally serve her everything she asked for?"

"Don't twist my words."

"I'm twisting your words?"

Her voice rose again.

"You brought your late brother's widow into our home, Philip. Into my home. And now you're standing here telling me I haven't taken good care of her?"

"She is family."

"So am I!" The words exploded from her.

Philip's eyes flickered. Rita's chest rose and fell heavily. "So am I," she repeated, quieter this time. Her eyes filled despite her efforts to stop them. "I'm your wife."

Philip looked away.

That was worse than anything he could have said.

Rita pressed her lips together, trying desperately to hold herself together. But the humiliation burned.

She thought of Blair downstairs.

Soft-spoken. Fragile.Widowed.Carrying Philip's brother's child. And Philip hovering around her since she arrived. Making sure she was comfortable. Calling the housekeeper to prepare whatever she wanted.

Things Rita had once begged him to notice about her.

"You care about her," Rita whispered.

Philip's head turned immediately. "Don't make this into something it isn't."

"Then what is it?"

"She's vulnerable."

"So was I." The words slipped out.

Philip's face hardened.

Rita immediately regretted saying them. Not because they weren't true. But because Philip looked like he had already decided not to care.

"I don't want to argue about Blair," he said.

"Of course you don't."

"I've made my decision."

Rita's throat tightened. "So you're really doing this."

"Yes."

"Just like that?"

"No." His voice dropped. "Not just like that."

She waited.

Philip ran a hand over his jaw. "This marriage has been difficult for a long time."

Her eyes searched his face. "Because I wanted you around?"

"Because we want different things."

"What do you want, Philip?"

He didn't answer immediately.

And somehow, that silence answered more than his words could have.

Rita's heart sank. "Is it because of Blair?"

“What?” Philip frowned.

"Answer me!" Her voice rose."Are you in love with her?”

Cassie held the smile until her cheeks began to ache. Her heel tapped against the polished floor in a quick, steady rhythm, and she did not notice she was doing it until the man across the table glanced down at her foot and then back up at her face, still talking. Kelly had not stopped talking since the bread arrived. His voice bounced off the walls of the restaurant, and heads at the next two tables had turned twice already. He spoke about his gym, his cousin's startup, and a car he was "about to get," and every sentence ended in a laugh that he seemed to expect her to join. She nodded in the right places. She had stopped hearing the words a while ago."Excuse me." She set her napkin beside her plate and rose from the chair. "I need to use the restroom.""Okay." Kelly leaned back and spread his arms. "You want me to come help you?"Cassie stared at him. She did not blink."Relax, I'm joking." He threw his head back and laughed, much too loud, the sound rattling the glasses. "It was a

"You're back early," Cassie said, blinking up as Rita came through the door, dragging her feet like they belonged to someone else.Cassie set down what she was holding and moved to the chair across from her. She still had on her interview clothes, blazer buttoned wrong at the top."Let me get you some water." She disappeared into the hallway before Rita could answer.Rita sank into the couch and pressed her palms against her face. The doctor's voice hadn't stopped playing in her head since she'd left the clinic. You're pregnant. You're pregnant, Ms. Rita."Here." Cassie's voice came from somewhere close, and Rita looked up to find the glass already in front of her. "Drink. You look like you've seen a ghost."Rita took it and drank the whole thing in three long swallows, water running cold down her throat. "Thanks," she said, setting the glass on the table with a small clink.Cassie sat on the arm of the couch, studying her. "Did something happen at school? Someone giving you trouble?

The steady hum of medical machines filled the room when Rita slowly opened her eyes.Bright white lights glared down at her from the ceiling. She winced and immediately shut her eyes again. Her nose wrinkled at the sharp smell of antiseptic. It was strong enough to make her stomach turn.“Aww... this is awful,” she groaned. After a few seconds, she forced her eyes open again. This time, her pupils adjusted to the brightness. She stared at the unfamiliar ceiling for a moment, confused. Then she felt something tugging at her hand.Rita turned her head.An IV line was connected to the back of her hand. Her brows pulled together. “What the hell?”She lifted her hand and instinctively reached for the needle, ready to pull it out. Then everything came rushing back. The classroom. The lecture. The heat spreading through her body. The sudden dizziness. And then nothing. Her eyes widened. “Oh, shit!”She dropped her hand against her forehead. She had fainted In front of everyone. Her lecturer.

Rita adjusted the strap of her bag higher on her shoulder and drew in a slow breath. The air outside the lecture hall had felt ordinary enough, but the moment she stepped through the double doors, something shifted inside her chest. The room was already half full. Students filled the middle and back rows in loose clusters, their voices overlapping in easy laughter and low talk. A few flipped through thick notebooks. Others scrolled on their phones without looking up. No one paid her any real attention. She stopped just inside the entrance. For a full second she stood there, bag pressed against her hip, and felt the old familiar weight settle over her. Everyone else looked settled. Confident. Some of the students near the front were already comparing A-level scores and listing the universities that had accepted them. One girl mentioned a summer research placement. Another talked about the private tutors her parents had hired. Rita’s fingers tightened around the worn leather strap until

Rita ate her macaroni and cheese alone at the counter. It was slightly overcooked and the cheese had gone a little brown at the edges, but she ate it anyway. She packed the rest into a container for lunch and put it in her bag.Today was her first day at university. She had waited for this day for years. Becoming a doctor had been nothing more than a dream for so long that she had almost forgotten what it felt like to want something this badly. She had talked about it, prayed about it, imagined it, rehearsed it in her head a thousand times. Walking through the doors of a medical school. Sitting in a lecture hall. Opening a textbook with her name on the cover. Now it was real. She was actually going. All because of Victoria Bellarose.Rita leaned against the counter and let the memory come back.Victoria had called for her the same night she was discharged from the hospital. Rita had saved her life. She had been at the right place at the right time, and she had done what her grandmothe

Rita stood at the stove stirring a pot of macaroni and cheese with one hand while she checked her phone with the other. The cheese had just started melting into the pasta, thick and golden. The smell filled the small kitchen. She hummed under her breath and tapped her foot against the tile in time with the soft music coming from the speaker on the counter. The doorbell rang.“I’m coming,” she called. She dropped the spoon, wiped her hands on a towel, and walked to the door in her socks. A small smile sat on her face. She expected the delivery guy with the textbooks she had ordered. She unlocked the door and pulled it open.Cassie stood on the other side. Her makeup was ruined. Mascara ran down her cheeks in dark wet lines. Her eyes were swollen and red. Her lips shook. Her hair, usually neat, had come loose. Strands stuck to her damp face. She still wore the same clothes from the night before. They looked wrinkled and wrong on her body.“Oh my God,” Rita whispered. Her mouth opened. H
