Chapter 2: The Other Side of the Coin

Clara’s POV

Cora was right. I didn’t want to marry Kael. I never wanted to.

Being the golden girl, as Cora would call me, came with a lot of responsibilities, but I loved those responsibilities. I loved watching my mom while she made jewelry and talked about how she wanted to teach us how much her craft meant to her. But when Cora would sneak away, I remained because I loved it.

I never really broke the rules. I didn’t see the need to.

But there was one responsibility I never really wanted.

Being the twin who was betrothed to Kael.

I did love the idea of being a sophisticated lady, one with so much money and power. Being the Luna of Valley Pack promised me all of that, but it meant I had to marry Kael, and I didn’t want to. I did not love him.

I did not want a marriage of alliance. I wanted to get married to a man I loved and who loved me equally, too. To be more direct… I was in love with someone else.

“I do not want to marry him, Cora…” I finally said, collapsing onto my sister’s shoulder and sniffing back my tears.

“I am so confused, and I do not know what to do. Father will announce our engagement for sure tonight because we leave for the academy soon, and you know what happens when we graduate… I will have to be his wife. That is not what I want!”

Even though I was leaning on her shoulder, I could tell that Cora was too stunned to speak. I slowly turned to face her. She was indeed too stunned to speak.

I had never rebelled against or challenged my father’s orders or what was required of me, yet here I was, trying to break a promise that was even older than my sister and me.

“Please say something, Rogue…” I whimpered.

“I am sorry…” She immediately turned to face me and grabbed my hands.

“Clara… I am so sorry. I always thought it was what you wanted. I am so sorry I never noticed.”

Oh, my sweet sister…

She might act like her heart was made of stone, but it wasn’t. Cora was my best friend, and regardless of our differences, we were inseparable. It was impossible not to love my sister. We had the same face; it didn’t matter whether she loved swords and I loved roses.

Cora would always tell me to do all the things I couldn’t do in front of others. I could use words that weren’t apparently ladylike, and we would gossip about our parents together.

Yet I had never once told her that I never wanted to marry Kael.

“It’s okay, Cora… I am sorry for not telling you…”

“You must tell Father. He cannot marry you off to someone you do not love.”

I knew Cora would say this.

“I cannot. I cannot go against Father’s rules… You know that…”

“So what? What do you want to do? You want to be married off to that jackass? No way… You are too sweet for him. Kael is too rude to be a husband of alliance. I never liked him, but I thought you genuinely loved him and wanted this. I thought he was a different man with you…”

“He is cold. I do not like him, Cora,” I mumbled.

Kael had never hurt me, but he had never really made me happy, either. He had once said, “We are a team, and if we do what is required of each other, then the days will pass by faster.”

It was at that moment I knew I didn’t want to marry him.

“Then you will not marry him… Do you want me to talk to Father for you? I will try. He never listens to me, but I can try to make him postpone the engagement if I threaten to make a scene if he announces your engagement to Kael on our birthday… Shall I do that?”

I sighed.

“We will look for a way…”

I managed to convince Cora to take off her choker, which was designed with fangs, but she kept her black gown. I couldn’t force her to wear pastel colours like my mom would have wanted.

This was one of the easiest ways to tell us apart, apart from her black hair and my blonde hair.

You could never catch Cora wearing the type of clothes I wore.

“This is just another excuse for Dad to show off and network. Our birthday party, with all his friends and business partners all over the place?” Cora scoffed.

I looked around the party, and it was true. Although there were some of our peers from school in attendance, my parents’ friends and business associates were all over the place.

“Happy birthday, my favourite twins…”

A voice called from behind us. It was our best friend, Zoey.

Zoey was the only friend we both had mutually. I had my own friends, and so did Cora because of our differences, but Zoey was our best friend. We had been friends since childhood.

She was Jace’s cousin, and he was walking towards Cora right now.

He was Cora’s buddy, like her partner in crime.

“Do you like the dagger I gave you?” Jace asked Cora.

She immediately placed her palm over his mouth.

“Shush… Jace! Keep your mouth shut!” She slapped his head.

I swallowed hard. I felt invisible right now. It was always like this when Jace was around. I hardly ever even spoke when he was around.

He was more like Cora when it came to personality. He never really spoke to me. Cora once said he thought I was full of myself.

“Happy birthday, Clara…”

He turned to me. Our eyes met, and my heart dropped.

He was staring at me, and I couldn’t even speak.

“Thank… Thank you, Jace.”

“I didn’t come with a gift, but… I will get you one,” he said to me.

He seemed to be in such a hurry to leave with Cora.

“Cora, let’s check the liquor line! You are an adult now… You can drink liquor!” he said, practically dragging Cora away.

“What’s with you? Why do you look like you just got struck by lightning?” Zoey tapped my shoulder.

“Oh… It was nothing. Don’t you think we should check the liquor line, too?”

It was him!

I looked like I had been struck by lightning because the boy I loved was Jace…

I was in love with Jace.

Chapter 8: One last time Cora’s POV“Why are you gifting me and not Clara?”I didn’t even realise when the words left my mouth. Perhaps it was because I was so caught up in my anger that he hadn’t even given Clara a gift, yet here he was, standing in front of me with a box meant for me.It made no sense.Or maybe he had already given Clara hers. But why would he give me one? When we were kids, our parents used to make us exchange gifts on each other’s birthdays. But after Kael and I became enemies, they eventually ended the tradition. We had both attended each other’s birthday parties without bringing gifts countless times and they just decided to let it go . I only attended his birthday parties because my parents forced me to, and because I had to accompany Clara. He only attended mine because it was also Clara’s birthday. So imagine my expression when he was standing in front of our porch with a gift he said was mine . I was irritated. That was the word.I didn’t want his gift or

Chapter 7: My Dreams aren’t just Dreams Cora’s POVClara and I had already planned how we were going to spend the next two days before leaving for the Academy. She was going to spend the whole night preparing the scent mask, and then we could have our little briefing.I knew little to nothing about Kael since we had stopped speaking after our last fight. Clara, on the other hand, hardly spoke whenever Jace was around, so there was a lot we needed to discuss.Besides, the Academy would separate us because of our different training schemes. We wouldn’t have much time to see each other except during general assemblies and school events. Two days might not be enough, but we still had to make use of the time we had.“I should get going now. I need to use a lot of herbs for the masking, and I have to go get them. Let’s meet in my room later?” Clara suggested.“Sure, let’s do that.” I nodded. She walked towards the door but stopped just before opening it. Turning back to face me, she gave

Chapter 6: The Deal 2Clara’s POVIt was a good plan… one that Cora and I could pull off. I never thought I would be doing something so risky, but I was willing to do anything to escape getting married to Kael. This was a great opportunity for me. I might never make Jace fall in love with me, and my silly crush on him might not turn into something even after this swap. At least I would get to experience what it was like to be his girl, even though I had to pretend to be Cora.I knew it wasn’t the perfect plan, but the key objective was to cancel my engagement and help Cora’s friend. What was the worst that could happen?“How long is it going to take to mask our scents?” Cora asked.I immediately dragged the chair from the corner of her room and sat beside her.“I can spend the night doing it, and we can fill each other in on everything we need to know about each other’s men,” I explained.“I don’t like the way that sounds…” Cora scoffed. “Our men? Eishhh… Pick something else.”I rol

Chapter 5: The DealCora’s POVWhen did I find out Clara liked Jace? Let’s just say there wasn’t a time when I didn’t know. She’s my twin.I could see how her eyes lit up whenever Jace was around. She never looked at Kael the way she looked at Jace. Never.“You knew?”I nodded, and she immediately lowered her head.“He didn’t ask me to be his girlfriend… or rather, his real girlfriend,” I explained with a shrug.“What do you mean?” she asked, lifting her head to look at me.“Remember Lydia? Jace’s crazy ex, the one who wouldn’t leave him alone? She’s back at it again, and you know how she hates being replaced. Jace came up with a plan… He wants us to fake date. That way, she can leave him alone. That’s what you heard… that’s why he was asking me to be his girlfriend. I think it’s a stupid plan, though.”I grabbed her hand and helped her sit down. Then I tucked her hair behind her ear, studying her face. I could see so much hope and pain in her eyes all at once.I hated our parents fo

Chapter 4: The EngagementClara’s POVI couldn’t find Cora anywhere. My father was taking the stand, and it was time for him to announce my engagement. It turned out the trick we had pulled earlier hadn’t worked.“Zoey, have you seen Cora anywhere?” I rushed over to where Zoey was standing.“She’s outside with Jace. What is the matter? You don’t look so good…”How could I look good when my father was about to ruin my life, and yet there was nothing I could do about it?I tried my best to walk past people calmly, trying not to draw attention to myself.“Clara… where are you going?” I heard a voice call from the other side of the room.It was Kael.He was walking towards me, and I managed to fake a smile.Kael hadn’t even said hello to me since the party started, not even a birthday wish. This was the man I was supposed to marry?“Your dad asked me to come and get you. He’s making the announcements soon…”“Forget about that clown. She doesn’t need to be here. This is our engagement.”K

But regardless of how shocking the news was, I didn’t want my sister married to that jackass either.Kael and I had history. Not a good one, but it was a history that had stuck with me over the years. We all used to be playmates—Clara, Jace, Zoey, Kael, and me. Back then, we spent so much time together that our parents barely had to worry about where we were. We were always somewhere, getting into trouble or coming up with ridiculous games to entertain ourselves.Well, that was before Kael decided that the world revolved around him.He had always been arrogant, even as a child. He hated being told no, and he expected everyone to do whatever he wanted. If things didn't go his way, he would sulk, throw a tantrum, or find a way to make everyone regret going against him.And unfortunately for him, I had never been the kind of girl who enjoyed bowing to anyone's wis
