Lyra pov

The moment his chest heaved, I didn’t think. I couldn’t.

“Garrick!” The scream ripped from my throat as I threw myself at him, arms wrapping around his trembling frame. I buried my face into his pale shoulder, sobbing, shaking, unable to believe he was warm beneath my touch.

Not cold.

Not lifeless.

Alive.

My tears drenched him as I clung on, afraid that if I let go, he would slip away again. “I’m so sorry,” I whispered over and over, the words tumbling out between broken cries. “I’m so sorry, Garrick. Please… please be okay.”

His arms twitched, slow and sluggish, but then one lifted—weak and trembling—and brushed against my back. That small motion nearly shattered me.

I pulled away just enough to see his face. His eyes were hazy, but there was recognition there. The pale blue I’d thought I would never see again blinked at me, confused and dazed. His lips moved, voice scratchy and broken.

“Ly… Lyra?”

I nodded furiously, tears spilling faster. “Yes! Yes, it’s me,” I choked o

Kael's pov.I don’t know how long it has been. Days? Weeks? Months?Time doesn’t exist here, only the torment of the shadows and the loud heavy sound of my own breath. At some point, Draken had lit the torches along the walls, their flickering flames casting a steady glow over the blood-stained stones. I didn’t know whether it was mercy or cruelty; the darkness had once been suffocating, but at least it hid the look of madness on my face. Now, under the torches, there was nowhere to hide. But I’d changed. I could feel it in my bones. The shadows that once squeezed the life from my lungs I had endured them. The visions that once tore apart my mind, I resisted them. They still came, oh, they came, but I no longer screamed. No longer whithered in pain. I simply… endured.Draken lounged nearby, half-shadow, half-man, as usual if boredom had once again taken over him and I no longer brought him entertainment. He twirled a lollipop lazily between his fingers, watching me with those bottomle

Kael's povThe chamber was too quiet after Julian’s ragged breathing had settled. His blood still dropped on the stone, but Draken stood there as if the violence had never happened, shadows curling lazily around him like smoke.“Julian,” he said suddenly, his voice casual, almost amused. “You’re going to leave now. Make some excuse for the people. Tell them their king will be… unavailable for a month or two.”My head snapped up, heart hammering. A month or two? What? Why?Before I could even form the question, the shadows moved and Draken was right in front of me. So close I could see the unnatural smoothness of his pale skin, the faint gleam of his fangs, the black abyss swirling in his eyes. His mouth curled in a smirk, a predator savoring his prey’s trembling.“You,” he whispered, his voice brushing across my skin like a chill wind, “are not leaving this chamber until I deem you ready.”I froze, caught in that abyss. And then, without warning, he leaned in and pressed his lips agai

Kael's povThe torches along the stone walls flickered, though no wind blew. I felt the shift before I heard it, like the shadows themselves had inhaled. Then, from the far corner of the chamber, darkness peeled itself free from the wall, taking shape as a man.At least, half a man.The other half was swallowed in shifting shadows, writhing as though alive, clinging to him like a cloak. The man that emerged was pale, his skin almost luminous against the black. His hair fell in loose ink-dark strands around his face, and his eyes—gods above—his eyes were pools of abyssal black. No whites, no color. Just endless void. And yet he was beautiful. Terrifyingly beautiful. A kind of beauty that demanded silence. My heart stuttered in my chest, caught between awe and fear.“Ahh,” he drawled, lips curling to reveal long, sharp fangs. “Finally. A guest.”In one hand, he held a bright red lollipop, which he slid between his teeth with unsettling glee. The sharp tips of his fangs clinked lightly a

  • The alpha king's slave mate   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT

Kael's povI had been through every part of this damned castle, or so I thought. But where my father led me now… it was someplace I had never even heard whispers about. From the threshold alone, my instincts screamed at me to run. Something foul lingered beyond, like rot steeped in shadows, like evil made into a stench I could taste on my tongue. The hairs on my arms rose, and I almost refused to step through. Almost. But Julian didn’t hesitate, so neither could I.This place felt worse than the forbidden forest. I knew that it could kill me but didn't want to but whatever lay in it was allowing me to feel it's power and know to be on my best behavior. We passed into the dark, and I immediately felt it—an aura so vile it sank beneath my skin and clung to my bones. My father guided me silently to a staircase carved from stone, one that spiraled downward into the bowels of the earth. How has this place been here and it wasn't even in the blueprint or the castle? How and when were these

kael's pov“What do you mean by weapon?” Lucian asked in a deadly tone. His voice was filled with anger but he controlled himself because even now he knows that he doesn't have that much power over usJulian didn’t hesitate. He never did. My father was always composed, even when speaking of the most damning truths. “There’s a prophecy,” he began, his eyes narrowing slightly, “a prophecy about a she-wolf destined to unite the kingdoms… or lead one to triumph over the other.”Selene stiffened at this, her hands clutching the fabric of her dress so tightly her knuckles whitened. Celeste frowned, confusion and disbelief written all over her face. And Lucian—he froze completely, his jaw clenching as though he already knew where this was going. My father continued, calm, unyielding. “Draken told me of it. He said the she-wolf would come from the Blackthorn line. For years, I assumed it was Celeste—” his gaze flicked briefly at her, dismissive, “—since Lyra was… weak. It seemed logical.”Cel

Kael’s POVThat was… surprising. I didn't expect that.So that means Lyra…Fuck! I fucked up big time. The silence was suffocating after that no one breathed and no one moved.Selene was the first to shatter it.Her shrill voice sliced through the office like a banshee making me wince. “What?!” she screamed, staggering back as if the word had hit her.Celeste’s brows pinched together, her confusion raw and unfiltered. “Shadowfang? What’s Shadowfang?” she demanded, her eyes darting between us. “I’ve never even heard of it before—”“No time,” I muttered, my voice sharper than intended. My father cursed under his breath as he ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. I found myself echoing the same curse because I could feel a headache coming on due to all.the information that had just been dumped in me. My head spun with everything unraveling before me.I turned away from them, walked toward the wall, and leaned my forehead against the cool stone. It did little to quiet the stor
