Nora slept through the middle of the night like she had no idea what was going on outside that room.

Maya woke up every hour. Put her hand on the baby's back feeling it go up and down, made sure everything was okay, then lay back and stared at the ceiling till the next time. She couldn't help it. Every small sound Nora made, every shift, every tiny noise pulled her straight out of whatever shallow sleep she managed to get into.

Dominic wasn't sleeping either. She could tell by his breathing. It

  • The biker who broke fate   Chapter 88: The Man At The Table

He wasn't what Dominic expected.Medium height, plain clothes, looked like someone who worked in an office somewhere unremarkable. Maybe forty, maybe older, hard to tell. Carried nothing except a small phone and sat down at Ray's kitchen table like he'd been there before. He looked at Dominic first then at Maya then at Ray."Marcus Webb," he said. Not offering a hand. Just saying it so they knew what to call him."You want tea," Marta said from the stove."Please," Webb said.Marta put a cup in front of him and he wrapped both hands around it and looked at Dominic."Ray told me the basics," Webb said. "I need to hear it from you. All of it. Take your time and don't leave anything out because the things that seem small are usually the ones that matter most."Dominic nodded. "Where do you want me to start.""Wherever it begins," Webb said.So Dominic started. He talked for a long time. Longer than he'd talked about any of it to anyone. Went back further than he'd even told Maya, back to

  • The biker who broke fate   Chapter 87: Tonight

Ray came back twenty minutes later and closed the front door behind him and stood in the kitchen.Marta was there straight away. "Well," she said."Talked to them," Ray said. "Two men, not local, trying to act like they were just parked up but they weren't good at it."Dominic came out of the hallway. "What did you say to them.""Same story as before," Ray said. "Said I lived on this street and didn't like strange cars sitting outside and wanted to know what they were doing.""And they said," Dominic said."Said they were waiting for someone," Ray said. "A friend. Gave a name I didn't recognise. Kept it easy.""But they're still there," Dominic said."Still there," Ray said. "Moved up two houses but still on the street."Dominic put his hand on the wall. "They're not going anywhere.""No," Ray said. "They're watching. Waiting to see who comes and goes." He sat down at the table. "But here's the thing. My contact called back while I was outside. Said he can come tonight if we need him

  • The biker who broke fate   Chapter 86: The Call

Ray was gone a long time.Long enough that Dominic got up twice and walked to the hallway and stood there listening and came back and sat down again.Marta moved around the kitchen washing things that were already clean, the way she did when she was waiting on something.Maya sat on the bed in the back room with Nora against her chest and listened to the house.Twenty minutes. Maybe more. Then Ray's footsteps in the hall and he came back into the kitchen and sat down and put his phone face down on the table.Dominic looked at him. "Well."Ray took a breath. "He'll talk," he said. "But not like this. Not over a phone and not through me. He wants to meet the person with the information directly.""Meet where," Dominic said."He'll come here," Ray said. "Or somewhere close. Somewhere he can sit across from you and hear it himself.""How long," Dominic said."Two days," Ray said. "Maybe three. He's got to move careful too. Can't just show up somewhere without making sure he's not being wa

Every small sound Nora made, every shift, every tiny noise pulled her straight out of whatever shallow sleep she managed to get into.Dominic wasn't sleeping either. She could tell by his breathing. It was too even, too controlled. The way he breathed when he was lying there with his eyes open thinking.Around four in the morning he said quietly, "You awake.""Yeah," Maya said. They lay there in the dark listening to Nora breathe between them, that small steady sound filling up the room."Been thinking," Dominic said."About what," Maya said."Everything," he said. "Where we go from here. What happens next. All of it."Maya turned her head and looked at him in the dark. "And.""Can't keep run

  • The biker who broke fate   Chapter 84: At The Door

Ray came in twenty minutes after the baby arrived. He knocked soft and Dominic stepped out into the hall and pulled the door behind him."Talk," Dominic said."They found your old building," Ray said. "Landlord told them you moved out two nights ago. Didn't know where but he described you both well enough.""So they know we're still in town," Dominic said."And they're going street by street," Ray said. "Slow and quiet. Asking around, showing pictures to whoever opens their door."Dominic went still. "Pictures.""Old ones from what my guy said," Ray said. "But clear."Dominic put his back against the wall and looked at the ceiling for a second. Through the closed door he could hear Alice moving around and the baby making those small new sounds and Marta's voice low and steady."How close are they," Dominic said."Three streets over when I got the message," Ray said. "That was forty minutes ago.""So they could already be on this road," Dominic said."Could be," Ray said. They stood in

  • The biker who broke fate   Chapter 83: Wrong Time

Ray and Dominic were still at the table working things out when Maya felt it.Not like the night before. That was soft and unsure. This was something else. Low and tight and it took her breath for a second. She sat there and didn't say anything.Marta was washing up at the sink and looked over at her. Women notice these things faster than men do."How long," Marta said quietly.Maya looked at her. "Just started," she said.Marta dried her hands slowly and came and sat next to her. Felt her stomach with both hands, firm and sure like Alice did."How far apart," Marta said."First one," Maya said. "Just now."Marta nodded. "Okay," she said. "Don't say anything to them yet."Maya looked at Ray and Dominic still talking at the other end of the table, low and serious, going back and forth about the two men."Okay," Maya said.Ten minutes later another one came. She gripped the edge of the table and breathed through it and Dominic didn't notice but Ray did and he looked at Marta and Marta g
