A Public Spectacle
Claire should have known Gordon wouldn’t just let their engagement announcement happen quietly.
She stood in front of the grand mirror in one of the endless rooms of his mansion, staring at her reflection in disbelief.
The dress was breathtakingly expensive silk hugging her curves perfectly but she barely noticed.
Because Gordon Hayes had just informed her that in one hour, they would be publicly announcing their engagement.
And she had zero say in the matter.
"A Press Conference? Are You Insane?"
Naomi nearly choked on air when Claire called her.
“A press conference?” Naomi whisper-yelled. “Are you insane?”
“What choice do I have?” Claire hissed, adjusting an earring. “Besides, it’s just a contract.”
Naomi scoffed. “Oh, honey. You think you’re in control, but I know men like him. They never play fair.”
Claire sighed. “I’ll be fine. It’s just two years.”
She hesitated before adding, “I just found out Gordon once worked for my dad’s company.”
Naomi muttered something under her breath but let it go.
Now, standing in the hallway outside the press room, Claire felt like she was about to pass out.
She wasn’t famous. She had never spoken to reporters. She could already imagine the headlines:
‘Gold Digger Marries Billionaire: Love or Business Deal?’
Beside her, Gordon stood unfazed, adjusting his cufflinks like this was just another business meeting.
“Nervous?” he asked, voice laced with amusement.
“No,” she lied.
He smirked. Clearly not buying it.
Before she could say anything else, Ethan poked his head out from the press room.
The poor guy looked like he was one breath away from passing out.
“Sir, we’re ready,” Ethan announced.
“Good.” Gordon placed a hand on the small of Claire’s back, guiding her forward.
“Time to sell the fairy tale.”
Inside the Press Room
Bright flashes from cameras nearly blinded Claire as she and Gordon stepped onto the platform.
The room was packed with journalists, their eyes sharp, waiting to dissect their every word.
Gordon, of course, looked completely in control, greeting the reporters with that effortless charm that made people forget he was a ruthless businessman.
“Thank you all for coming,” he began smoothly.
“I know this announcement may come as a surprise, but Claire and I are incredibly happy to share our engagement with you.”
The cameras clicked furiously.
Claire felt like a deer in headlights.
Then came the first question.
“Miss Donovan, how did you and Mr. Hayes meet?”
Claire froze.
Oh crap. They hadn’t rehearsed a fake love story.
But before she could say something stupid, Gordon smoothly answered
“It was fate.”
Claire’s head snapped toward him. Fate?
“Claire was different from anyone I had ever met,” Gordon continued, his tone soft, almost loving.
His gaze locked onto hers, too intimate.
“I knew from the first moment that she would change my life.”
The reporters ate it up.
Someone even aww’d.
Claire barely had time to process the absolute nonsense Gordon was spinning before the next question hit.
“Claire, how does it feel to be engaged to one of the most powerful men in the country?”
Her mouth went dry.
How was she supposed to answer that?
“I, uh… well, Gordon is…” She trailed off, panicking, before forcing a sweet smile.
“He’s… very persistent.”
Across the room, Ryan snorted loudly.
Gordon shot him a look before smoothly adding, “She means she’s incredibly lucky.”
Claire resisted the urge to elbow him in the ribs.
The rest of the press conference was a blur of fake smiles and rehearsed charm.
As they walked off the stage, Gordon leaned down and whispered in her ear, voice low and amused.
“Not bad. But you’ll have to get better at lying, Mrs. Hayes.”
The Donovans mansion
Victoria Donovan sat in her elegantly furnished living room, a glass of wine in one hand and her tablet in the other.
The news played softly in the background, just noise to fill the silence.
Then, a familiar name caught her attention.
“Billionaire Gordon Hayes announces surprise engagement to Claire Donovan.”
The glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the marble floor.
Her eyes widened as she stared at the screen.
The image showed Claire and Gordon standing side by side, Claire forcing a smile while Gordon looked as composed as ever.
“What…?” Victoria whispered, completely stunned.
She grabbed the remote and turned up the volume.
“…sources confirm that the couple has been secretly dating for months. This comes as a surprise, given Claire Donovan’s low public profile. But what’s even more intriguing is Mr. Hayes’ rapid rise to power. Just a decade ago, he was a simple employee in the Donovan Corporation…”
Victoria’s head snapped up.
Gordon Hayes.
The same Gordon who once worked for them.
She remembered him now quiet, intense, always in the background.
Her husband never liked him, but Victoria had paid little attention to the young man.
And now… he was a billionaire?
And marrying her daughter?
She shot up from her seat, grabbing her phone and dialing Claire’s number.
It rang.
And rang.
And rang.
Straight to voicemail.
Her chest tightened.
Claire hadn’t told her. Hadn’t told anyone.
And something about that made Victoria deeply uneasy.
The Next Day
Victoria tried calling again.
Voicemail.
Her heart pounded as she paced the room.
This wasn’t like Claire.
Even if they didn’t always see eye to eye, she would never do something this… reckless.
A marriage to Gordon Hayes of all people?
There had to be more to this.
Just as she was about to try Claire’s number again, the door to her husband’s study creaked open.
Victoria turned to see Richard Donovan standing there his face dark, his grip tight on his phone.
Their eyes met.
And for the first time in years, she saw something unsettling flash across his face.
Recognition.
Anger.
And something else.
Fear.
“Victoria,” he said slowly, his voice cold.
“We have a problem.”
"Alright." Gordon answered. He was not an amateur when it came to washing dishes, he had washed them for a period of time, when he was in his 20s. "Allow me help you with the dishes. You already prepared dinner." Gordon muttered after a second thought, feeling considerate.Claire looked up at him with surprise, he was volunteering to help her do the dishes. He didn't have to. "You do not have to. You have been busy all day." Claire responded."Then let's do it together. I'll provide assistance while you wash." Gordon said, giving no room for objections as he headed directly into the kitchen.Claire tried to stop him, but he seemed adamant on helping, so she went inside and allowed him help her. The day ended with Gordon and Claire doing the dishes, freshening up for a bath and going to sleep. ........................."Ma'am, there are a few people downstairs wanting to see you." A maid muttered from outside Claire's door. Claire sat up on the bed when she received the news, like
"You did not ask Mira." Gordon responded. "I'm done with lunch. Unfortunately I have work, so I'll be on my way now." Gordon added and left from there. Ethan felt satisfaction from watching Mira's appearance change from happiness, to sadness and misery. He quickly followed behind Gordon not wanting to be left alone with a witch. Mira stood there as she watched Gordon leave from there. A foreign feeling creeped up her chest, hatred? Envy? Sadness? She had not felt what it was like to be sad for a while and now she could feel sadness? The man she spent all her Life waiting for, was married to someone else? This could not be happening. Definitely not under her nose right now. This could not be happening. While Mira was pondering, her assistant who had been busy in a meeting, apparently filling in for Mira, who was suppose to be there was back."Ma'am. The list of applicants for the fashion design is out." Mira hummed and nodded, she gestured her assistant and headed out with her tr
Just recently he had gotten information that she was in Paris and now, he finds her in UK like she had not been gone for a few years. The woman named Mira frowned at the time in which he used to address her. Her eyes gazed from his eyes to his body and then it stopped on his fingers briefly before landing on his face again. "Is UK off limits for me? Why are you surprised to see me here?" Mira asked, a playful grin on her lips. "Hello Miss Mira." Ethan found the perfect time to intercept and say something. Mira turned towards Ethan, who she had noticed but choose to ignore. "Hi Ethan." Mira responded, the least but excited to speak to him.Just like Richard, Ethan had been responsible for she not getting Gordon's contact on time. Blocking her from meeting him at every country they were both in at the same time. He also did things like, avoiding her, refusing to give her inside information about Gordon and all that. "I am busy. I'll have to take my leave now Mira." Gordon muttered
"I do not know if you have seen it, but have been sending proposals for a month now. Although, I have gotten no response." Richard said, hinting at the fact that his proposals were ignored on purpose by Ethan and Gordon. "I usually don't check the emails. My assistant checks them and tells me about the important and productive ones. When it's futile, he doesn't tell me about it." Gordon muttered, allocating all the blames to Ethan. In fact, Ethan had informed him of Richard's countless business proposals and he had gone through all of them but at the end of the day he found them to be unprofitable for him.Richard grit his teeth. That Ethan is proving to be a thorn in his flesh, if he kept this act up, he would soon beat him up or get him killed. "Well then. We are on the lucky side, I have sent the email directly to your personal messages. If you could go through them and give me your response, that would be good." Richard said. Gordon hummed but then he gestured towards the wall
"Mum supported me but Dad never supported me choices. He promised to never let me achieve my goals and I promised him that I would achieve them." Claire explained, nostalgia in her gaze. If there was someone she was grateful for it was her mum but eventually, her mum slowly started to become like her dad. She started complaining about everything and their relationship had fallen off too. Gordon stared at Claire without saying a word. He didn't know how to console a person. He had tried in the past but it proved futile and so he had given up. He could understand how Claire felt because sometimes in his life, he had been in her shoes as well. Claire sniffed and wiped her face with her hands before looking at Gordon with a smile. "I have gotten over it. I'm so sorry for making you watch me cry. I got over it a long time ago.""I strive to be better and work harder everyday." Claire added, cheering herself up. The atmosphere being filled with silence was something due didn't enjoy. G
"Earlier today, you mentioned you were working? What were you working on for hours?" Gordon asked, starting a conversation. At the same time, he was also curious about what work Claire could possibly had worked on all day that had kept her busy. He was aware of the fact that she ran a fashion line which had been barely established before but it had totally crumbled when she was in debt. Excitement gleamed in Claire's eyes at his question. Except Noami, no one had an interest in what she did, go she began talking excitedly forgetting about her worries and thoughts."I was busy designing a dress. Making a sketch that it. " "Remember I had worked in the fashion line previously but my business had previously declined." She muttered, her voice strained.Gordon nodded, there was nothing he didn't know about her. "I saw an opportunity online to get a job or get investments to start a new fashion business and work with big brands.""The condition is designing a unique, out of this world
