The Price of Independence

Aria sat at the breakfast table, listlessly stirring her tea and wishing the morning would hurry up and end.

Across from her sat her father, Mr. Victor Stone. He folded his morning newspaper with the serene composure of a man who had already made up his mind and saw no reason to entertain further debate.

"You'll go on a date next week," he said plainly.

Aria’s spoon froze.

"Dad, are you pretending you don't know, or do you genuinely not know?" she asked, her voice tight. "Haven't you heard a single thing about my previous blind dates?"

"I've heard." Victor took a slow, deliberate sip of his coffee.

Aria stared at him in utter disbelief. "And you still want me to go on another one?"

"That's precisely why I looked internationally this time instead of domestically." Victor pointed a finger at her, leaving his underlying message crystal clear: nobody left at home was willing to deal with her anymore.

The cutlery slipped from Aria's fingers, clattering loudly against her fine china plate.

"Dad! Do you want the rumor that I'm crazy to reach international waters, too? I don't want to be set up with anyone!"

"You can't only do the things you want to do." His voice remained measured and even—a calm demeanor that somehow made her blood boil even faster. "As my heiress, you have obligations and responsibilities."

"So you want to force me into an arranged marriage? Just like you did?" Aria shot back, her eyes flashing. "You weren't happy! You got divorced! So why on earth do you want me to walk down the exact same path?"

Her words tumbled out in a bitter rush, striking a nerve and leaving Victor momentarily speechless.

"Me..." he began, pausing as he struggled to reclaim his authoritative footing. When he finally found his voice, it came out considerably weaker than intended. "That was because your mother was headstrong and stubborn."

"Well, I'm just as headstrong as Mom was." Aria lifted her chin defiantly. "If I'm not in love, I'm not getting married. So stop meddling in my life!"

"You insolent child!" Victor slammed his palm against the wooden table, making the tableware jump. "If you plan on doing whatever you please, then pack up and move out!"

Aria stood up instantly, her chair scraping against the floorboards.

"Fine! I know you pride yourself on never taking back a word you say, so I'll do precisely as you order!"

She stormed off down the hallway before he could offer another word.

A short while later, Aria had packed her bags. Dragging her heavy suitcases toward the grand front entrance, her pride pushed her forward even as a small, quiet part of her secretly hoped someone would run out to stop her.

And someone did.

"Wait! Wait!"

Her father’s voice echoed down the driveway behind her. He hurried down the steps, breathing heavily, his suit coat still only half-buttoned.

"I won't stop you from leaving on your own," he panted, catching his breath. "But..."

But?

Aria turned around, a faint flicker of hope kindling in her chest.

Unfortunately, it was extinguished almost immediately.

"Leave your credit card behind."

"What?" she gasped, staring at him as though he had suddenly spoken a foreign language.

"Do you even comprehend what it means to be truly independent?" Victor asked sternly. "True independence means living off the income you earn with your own two hands."

He extended an open palm toward her and waited.

Aria stood motionless for a moment, staring at his outstretched hand in stunned silence. Then, with a furious huff, she slapped her card forcefully into his palm, spun on her heel, and marched away.

"What will you do now?" Victor called after her retreating figure. "You'll have to pay for your own meals!"

"Confiscating my card?!" she shouted back without looking over her shoulder. "What a petty move!"

Victor didn't reply. He stood in the driveway, watching his daughter stride down the road with her luggage. For a fleeting second, the harsh lines on his face softened into concern, but he quickly steeled his gaze and turned away.

Perhaps it was high time she learned to stand on her own two feet.

Meanwhile, at Nova Care Food Company, Adrian sat at the head of the long executive table, presiding over a high-stakes meeting with the members of the food development division.

His expression was impassive and razor-sharp as he reviewed the project dockets before him. Tension hung in the air as every team waited anxiously for his final decision.

Midway through the presentation, Adrian turned a page and broke the silence. "Team 4 will take charge of the new project."

Ms. Victoria Hayes, manager of Team 4, immediately straightened her back in her chair. Out of every department in the building, her group had been chosen.

"Team 4 will collaborate directly with Chef William on this initiative," Adrian announced, shutting the folder. "That is all. Dismissed."

As the meeting wrapped up, the executives and team members gathered their materials and began filing out into the hallway. Ms. Victoria stacked her documents with a focused mind, already mapping out how her team would execute the assignment.

Back in Team 4's office space, Chloe and two of her colleagues were deep in discussion about the project details when the door swung open.

Ms. Victoria strode inside, her countenance noticeably tense. Without uttering a word, she walked straight to her desk and sank into her chair with a heavy, frustrated sigh.

"How did it go?" asked her male colleague, standing up from his desk to approach her.

"How do you think it went?" Ms. Victoria rubbed her temples. "I got earfuls for failing to thoroughly vet the chef's personal life beforehand. I had to assure them we'd find a suitable replacement chef right away."

Chloe stood up immediately, stepping forward while holding an iPad. "Actually, I've already put together a list of alternative candidates."

"Oh?" Ms. Victoria looked up, taking the tablet from her. "All right, let's see what we have."

"This is Chef Maxwell," Chloe explained, swiping to the first profile. "He's renowned for his high-end seafood concepts." She swiped again. "And this is Chef Josiah. He's made numerous television appearances, so he already carries substantial brand recognition."

Ms. Victoria scrutinized the screen before letting out another tired sigh. "The trouble is, everyone in the industry knows we're scrambling for a replacement. Whomever we pitch will realize something went wrong behind the scenes."

She frowned at the tablet, pausing as a thought struck her. "What about Chef Caleb?"

"Chef Caleb?" Chloe repeated, tilting her head.

"Yes," Ms. Victoria said, her eyes brightening slightly. "He's relatively new to the mainstream scene, but his culinary skills are exceptional. Wouldn't he be a solid fit for this project?"

"Absolutely!" Chloe replied with a warm smile. "That's precisely why I included him in the backup options."

Ms. Victoria raised an eyebrow cautiously. "Is his background clean, though?"

The male colleague leaned in closer, inspecting the profile photo on the screen. "He looks like a total womanizer. What if he drags us into a scandal right after we sign him?"

Ms. Victoria shot him a sharp look. "Don't go smearing an innocent man's reputation when you don't have a better alternative to offer."

"I'm not smearing him!" he protested, holding his hands up. "I'm just pointing out that he's clearly very popular with the ladies."

A light chorus of chuckles rippled across the room, breaking the tension.

After weighing the pros and cons for a few more minutes, the team arrived at a consensus: Chef Caleb was their strongest prospect.

"All right then, prepare the full proposal," Ms. Victoria instructed, handing the iPad back to Chloe. "We'll submit the official recommendation tomorrow morning."

"Yes, ma'am," Chloe answered, returning to her workspace.

As she flipped open her laptop, a gentle, hopeful smile touched her lips.

If everything goes smoothly, Chef Caleb might be exactly what our team needs to make this work.

She had no way of knowing that bringing Chef Caleb into the fold would trigger a chain reaction leading to far more than just a successful corporate project.

  • The contract Bride of The Ruthless CEO    One Step Away from the Truth

Chloe went to work the next day. Something had happened on the way back with Adrian. A ball had struck her in the face, leaving a bruise. She had tried everything she could think of to cover it up. She also had another reason to hide it: she couldn't let Adrian discover who she really was. She arrived with only a few minutes left before the usual morning check, so she hurried toward the elevator with a patch covering one eye. She had just reached out to press the button when Adrian stepped into the same elevator. Chloe froze. In her shock, she let go of the patch, revealing the bruise beneath it. Adrian had seen it. Her secret was out. She quickly pressed the button and fled the elevator at the first opportunity. Adrian stood there, watching her leave. The bruise and the sudden way she had bolted only made him more suspicious. He walked straight to his office, his mind racing with thoughts he couldn't shake. Had he really gone on a date with one of his own employees? He paced a

Chloe and Adrian arrived at their destination. It was his grandfather's house. "Maybe I should have taken something to calm my nerves," Chloe murmured as she stepped onto the grounds. "Are you nervous?" Adrian asked. "Didn't you say you had this under control?" "Mr. Ethan said your grandfather is a very scary, very strict person." Chloe swallowed. "If he finds out we're lying to him..." "If you're scared," Adrian said, "then while we're inside, try to love me for real." "What?" Chloe stared at him, stunned. "Let's go," Adrian said. They stepped inside. Adrian's grandfather was already seated, rubbing his hands together like some kind of mafia boss. "Hey!" Adrian greeted him. "Ms. Stephanie!" the old man exclaimed, turning to a servant standing nearby. "You are as beautiful as I imagined." "Not her. Her," Adrian corrected, looking at Chloe, who was standing behind him. Adrian had no idea that Stephanie wasn't her real name. She was Chloe, an employee of his own company. "Wh

Chloe reached Caleb's restaurant to find the door still open. It must be closing time, she thought. She stepped inside, her eyes sweeping the room."Are there still customers?" she murmured to herself, walking deeper into the restaurant. The file from the company was pressed against her chest.A few steps further, she saw Caleb. He was with a woman, and the two of them were laughing, completely at ease with each other."Come on! You can't just do that all of a sudden. Look, I've spilled it everywhere!" the woman said, holding a glass in her hand as she laughed.Chloe stopped where she stood. She did not know what to do with her feet, her hands, or even her face. Her world felt as though it had been crushed into pieces. She had a crush on Caleb, a very big one, and she had carried it quietly for a long time. Then she saw the worst thing she could have imagined. They kissed, right there in front of her.In a state of shock, Chloe let go of the file. It hit the floor with a loud thud, ma

In the board meeting room, everyone was already seated, the company's executives among them. A few minutes of quiet shuffling passed, and then the door opened and the company president walked in. Adrian. The entire room rose to greet him, a gesture of respect. He gave a small motion of his hand. "Please, take your seats. Let us begin." He lowered himself into his chair and allowed a moment of silence to settle over the table. Then he looked up and called out the next name on the agenda. "Development Team 4." It was Ms. Victoria's group. "Is the chef ready?" President Adrian asked. "Actually..." Ms. Victoria's words began to stumble. "Ms. Chloe was supposed to present for our team." She never got to finish. "Why? Is there a problem?" Adrian asked. "Well, that's..." The sound of the door opening cut her off. Ms. Victoria turned around, and so did everyone else. It was Chloe. She slipped into the boardroom on her toes, her face and half her body hidden behind a

Chloe hurried into the building, praying she wouldn't be late. She signed in at the front desk, barely slowing down, and made straight for the department's team office. Her bag landed on her desk with a dull thud. She didn't even stop to catch her breath. Ms. Victoria was standing near the window with a file in her hand, and Chloe crossed the floor to her at once. "Good morning, Ms. Victoria." "Good morning, Chloe." Ms. Victoria looked up. "Yes?" "I finished the profile on Chef Caleb that you requested." Chloe held out a thick file with both hands. "There's also a proposal for our collaboration." Ms. Victoria's brows lifted. "Goodness. Did you finish all of this in one day?" "I already had a few ideas from the last recommendation," Chloe explained. "So it didn't take very long." Ms. Victoria took the file, slipped her glasses on, and began to read. The room seemed to quiet around her. She turned the pages slowly until her finger stopped on a single line. "White kimchi ravioli?"

  • The contract Bride of The Ruthless CEO    A Kiss He Couldn't Forget

Adrian's grandfather sat in his favorite armchair, a cup of coffee in his right hand and his eyes fixed on the television. On the screen, the two leads stood face to face, and the old man reacted to every line. He gasped, nodded, and swatted at the air as if he could reach into the screen and direct them himself. Across the room, Adrian watched without really seeing. On the screen, the two characters leaned toward each other, tilted their heads, and, with a clumsy little bump, their lips touched. Adrian's mind went somewhere else entirely: the street in front of the family business, Chloe's face inches from his own, and the accidental brush of her lips against his. Before he realized what he was doing, his fingers rose to his mouth. The moment replayed in his mind, and he quickly lowered his hand as if someone might have caught him. "What kind of show makes two characters fall for each other after just one kiss?" he muttered, standing up and striding out of the sitting room. "Thi
