INICIAR SESIÓNChloe lay in bed, phone in hand, caught in that blurry place between awake and asleep. Her thumb had barely finished scrolling when the screen lit up and began to vibrate.
Adrian. At this hour? She hesitated, then answered. "Hello?" "Where are you right now?" "Where else would I be at this hour?" she said, stifling a yawn. "I'm at home. What is it?" He didn't answer her question. Instead, he told her to meet him at a quiet restaurant where they could talk privately. Twenty minutes later, Chloe was dressed, her makeup done with practiced speed, and on her way. She arrived first and chose a seat at the far end of the table, as much distance from him as the furniture allowed. When Adrian walked in and found her there, he took the chair opposite without comment. "I thought it best to discuss this somewhere private," he said casually. "Oh. Okay." Chloe smiled, though it sat uncomfortably on her face. "Did you memorize everything?" "Yes," she answered with perfect confidence. And she began. Name, birthday, family, schedule, habits: she recited his entire profile in a single steady stream, the way a student performs for an examiner. "Enough!" Adrian barked. Chloe blinked. "What's wrong?" "What are you doing?" "Um… I heard the Chairman is very thorough," she explained. "So I memorized your whole profile. Just in case." "Do you really think he'll ask you to recite it?" His voice was cold. "Still," said Mr. Ethan, Adrian's secretary, from his seat nearby, "I'm impressed, Ms. Stephanie." Adrian shot him a sidelong look. Ethan promptly found something interesting to study on the tablecloth. "If you do it by the book, you can't lose," Chloe said, chuckling. "Go on, ask me anything. I'll get it right." Ms. Stephanie. It was the name she now had to answer to. Chloe had been forced to leave her real identity behind, and the new name still sat on her like borrowed clothes. "Is that so?" Adrian leaned back. "Then let's say my grandfather asks to see you on Saturday, two weeks from now. What's the correct response?" It was a vicious question. Even Ethan stiffened, caught off guard. Chloe fell silent. She turned it over, searching for the trap. "Well… there's no real reason to say no. If your grandfather wants to see me, I should just say sure." "Wrong." "Why?" "Because that day is our one-year anniversary," Adrian said in the patient tone of a teacher. "Don't couples usually spend that day together?" "That was a trick question!" "That's exactly why simple memorization won't always work." He tilted his head. "Are you sure you studied properly?" Chloe pressed her lips together, then fired back. "Fine. Let me ask you something. What was I wearing the day we first met?" "How could I possibly know that?" "Wrong!" Chloe declared. "Of course you should remember. After all, it was the first day we met." Ethan coughed into his fist to hide a laugh. By the time the evening ended, the night had grown deep. Adrian did not let her go off alone. He had the car brought around. "You really don't have to drive me home," Chloe said. "It's not a favor," said Adrian. "Just accept the ride." "He's right," Ethan added from the driver's seat. "It wouldn't be proper to let a woman travel home alone at this hour." Chloe gave in. "Thank you so much." The road hummed beneath the wheels. Somewhere along the way, Chloe's eyelids grew heavy, and she was asleep before she knew it. Then her head tipped sideways and landed on Adrian's shoulder. He went rigid. Before he had time to think, his hand shot out and shoved her away from him. Thunk. "Ouch!" Chloe groaned, clutching her head. She blinked around the dim car. "We must be close by now." "What? We still have a bit more to go," Ethan answered from the front. "Oh." She laughed softly. "I guess I was wrong." Then, in a lower voice, rubbing the sore spot, "That hurt, though." Adrian said nothing. A small pang of guilt pricked at him. She had hit her head because of him. At last, the car slowed outside her building. "We've arrived, Ms. Stephanie," Ethan announced. Chloe stepped out, turned, and waved goodbye, thanking them both once more. Adrian and Ethan watched through the window as she disappeared from view. "About Ms. Stephanie," Ethan said suddenly. "Don't you find there's something oddly endearing about her?" "Is being overly emotional and easily distracted endearing?" Adrian replied flatly. Ethan let it go and returned his eyes to the road. Behind him, Adrian turned toward the spot where Stephanie had been sitting. He thought of her head bumping against the window, of the sound she'd made, and, without meaning to, he began to smile. "Why are you smiling?" Ethan asked, glancing back. "It's nothing," Adrian said. But he didn't stop smiling.Adrian and Ethan walked towards their office, with Ethan trailing a step behind him. "What do you mean, remake the dish? Ms. Victoria said it was rated the highest at the tasting," Ethan said. "I am the president of this company," Adrian replied. "Is any other reason necessary?" "Well, it's very unlike you, sir. And you seem to be treating Ms. Chloe very emotionally." "Mr. Ethan." Adrian's voice sharpened with irritation. "Do you really not realize who Ms. Chloe is?" "Who else would she be?" Ethan asked, confused. "Chloe is Chloe." "That Chloe is... Ms. Stephanie." "What?" Ethan burst into laughter. "What are you talking about? Is that really true?" "Yes. I've already confirmed it," Adrian said, looking straight at him. "Wait. Just wait a second. How is that..." Ethan shook his head in disbelief. "So, what are you going to do now?" "What do you think? I'm going to take my time and make her realize..." Adrian pulled out his chair and sat down. "Just how big a mistake she's ma
Chloe went to work the next day. Something had happened on the way back with Adrian. A ball had struck her in the face, leaving a bruise. She had tried everything she could think of to cover it up. She also had another reason to hide it: she couldn't let Adrian discover who she really was. She arrived with only a few minutes left before the usual morning check, so she hurried toward the elevator with a patch covering one eye. She had just reached out to press the button when Adrian stepped into the same elevator. Chloe froze. In her shock, she let go of the patch, revealing the bruise beneath it. Adrian had seen it. Her secret was out. She quickly pressed the button and fled the elevator at the first opportunity. Adrian stood there, watching her leave. The bruise and the sudden way she had bolted only made him more suspicious. He walked straight to his office, his mind racing with thoughts he couldn't shake. Had he really gone on a date with one of his own employees? He paced a
Chloe and Adrian arrived at their destination. It was his grandfather's house. "Maybe I should have taken something to calm my nerves," Chloe murmured as she stepped onto the grounds. "Are you nervous?" Adrian asked. "Didn't you say you had this under control?" "Mr. Ethan said your grandfather is a very scary, very strict person." Chloe swallowed. "If he finds out we're lying to him..." "If you're scared," Adrian said, "then while we're inside, try to love me for real." "What?" Chloe stared at him, stunned. "Let's go," Adrian said. They stepped inside. Adrian's grandfather was already seated, rubbing his hands together like some kind of mafia boss. "Hey!" Adrian greeted him. "Ms. Stephanie!" the old man exclaimed, turning to a servant standing nearby. "You are as beautiful as I imagined." "Not her. Her," Adrian corrected, looking at Chloe, who was standing behind him. Adrian had no idea that Stephanie wasn't her real name. She was Chloe, an employee of his own company. "Wh
Chloe reached Caleb's restaurant to find the door still open. It must be closing time, she thought. She stepped inside, her eyes sweeping the room."Are there still customers?" she murmured to herself, walking deeper into the restaurant. The file from the company was pressed against her chest.A few steps further, she saw Caleb. He was with a woman, and the two of them were laughing, completely at ease with each other."Come on! You can't just do that all of a sudden. Look, I've spilled it everywhere!" the woman said, holding a glass in her hand as she laughed.Chloe stopped where she stood. She did not know what to do with her feet, her hands, or even her face. Her world felt as though it had been crushed into pieces. She had a crush on Caleb, a very big one, and she had carried it quietly for a long time. Then she saw the worst thing she could have imagined. They kissed, right there in front of her.In a state of shock, Chloe let go of the file. It hit the floor with a loud thud, ma
In the board meeting room, everyone was already seated, the company's executives among them. A few minutes of quiet shuffling passed, and then the door opened and the company president walked in. Adrian. The entire room rose to greet him, a gesture of respect. He gave a small motion of his hand. "Please, take your seats. Let us begin." He lowered himself into his chair and allowed a moment of silence to settle over the table. Then he looked up and called out the next name on the agenda. "Development Team 4." It was Ms. Victoria's group. "Is the chef ready?" President Adrian asked. "Actually..." Ms. Victoria's words began to stumble. "Ms. Chloe was supposed to present for our team." She never got to finish. "Why? Is there a problem?" Adrian asked. "Well, that's..." The sound of the door opening cut her off. Ms. Victoria turned around, and so did everyone else. It was Chloe. She slipped into the boardroom on her toes, her face and half her body hidden behind a
Chloe hurried into the building, praying she wouldn't be late. She signed in at the front desk, barely slowing down, and made straight for the department's team office. Her bag landed on her desk with a dull thud. She didn't even stop to catch her breath. Ms. Victoria was standing near the window with a file in her hand, and Chloe crossed the floor to her at once. "Good morning, Ms. Victoria." "Good morning, Chloe." Ms. Victoria looked up. "Yes?" "I finished the profile on Chef Caleb that you requested." Chloe held out a thick file with both hands. "There's also a proposal for our collaboration." Ms. Victoria's brows lifted. "Goodness. Did you finish all of this in one day?" "I already had a few ideas from the last recommendation," Chloe explained. "So it didn't take very long." Ms. Victoria took the file, slipped her glasses on, and began to read. The room seemed to quiet around her. She turned the pages slowly until her finger stopped on a single line. "White kimchi ravioli?"
