LOGIN*Isla* Four taps come from inside the mountain. A pause. Three. Sava closes her eyes. Only for a breath. Then she lifts one hand toward the maintenance shelf above us. Bran answers with his copper peg. Two taps. Three. Four. The third toll stone begins to hum. "Alive," Sava says. The word barely carries through the snow. The mule stands beside her on the lower path with the false ledger strapped behind its saddle. Liora waits beneath the overhang five paces back, visible but outside the black hook carved across the stone. Caelen holds the western anchor. I hold the east. Twenty paces separate us. Snow fills most of that distance. The black-hook relay lies somewhere beneath it, waiting to decide which of us becomes a route. Sava unties the decoy ledger. The humming grows stronger. "Movement above," Bran calls. Lark's face appears briefly over the maintenance shelf. "The stone is vibrating beneath the packed snow. Larger than the toll marker." "Depth?" Sava asks.
*Isla* Cedric writes Miran's name at the top of the mission order. Not beneath the relay. Not beside the ledger. At the top. Sava stands opposite him at the toll refuge table, arms folded over her coat. Snowmelt darkens one shoulder. She has repaired the mule's lead rope with a knot tight enough to survive judgment. Cedric dips his pen again. "Primary objective," he reads, "recover Miran alive from altered-bloodline network control." Maeven's fingers press against the table. "The active relay affects every oath-stone north of the den." "It is the second primary objective," Cedric says. "Then it is not primary." "Two objectives may hold equal standing if neither can be abandoned without invalidating the mission." "That is sentiment written as procedure." "No. Sentiment has fewer subordinate clauses." Liora takes the pen from him. "Rescue first," she says. Cedric looks at his pen in her hand. "I was using that." "You were decorating." She points to the map of Needle Pa
*Isla* I catch Sava saddling a mule before dawn. She has chosen the animal with the quietest hooves. Of course she has. Snow pushes through gaps in the refuge stable roof. The mule stands beneath a broken beam, ears angled back while Sava tightens a narrow pack behind its saddle. No cooking gear. No bedroll. One water skin. Copper line. Climbing hooks. A ledger wrapped in gray cloth. "You forgot breakfast," I say. Sava's hands stop on the strap. She does not turn. "I am checking the western approach." "Alone." "The Fennec scouts are visible against snow." "So are you." "I know how to become less visible." I step into the stable. My left knee has stiffened overnight. Each stride pulls the bruised joint beneath the brace, but anger makes an excellent temporary support. "The relay opens at moonset," I say. "We have hours." "Storm damage may have changed the shelf." "And only you can inspect it." "I know the route." "The route that was hidden under your personal fold."
*Isla* The silver mark remains after the torches die. Morning enters through the window slit in a narrow gray blade. It crosses the stone wall, the empty knife target, and Caelen's bare shoulder. I wake with his hand over my stomach. He is already awake. His fingers do not move. "Question?" I murmur. "Do you want my hand there?" "Yes." His palm settles more fully against me. The two silver lines on the wall brighten. Caelen sees it. "So much for privacy," I say. The mark pulses once, then fades to a dull metallic trace. We examine each other before leaving the bed. Silver lies along the inside of Caelen's right wrist, thin as a vein beneath the skin. Mine carries a matching line on the left. They are not identical. His curves outward. Mine curves in. When we bring our wrists close without touching, nothing happens. Caelen looks at me. "Do you want to test contact?" "No." His hand withdraws. I wait three breaths. "Yes," I say. "Now I do." He offers his palm. I t
*Isla* The storm reaches Needle Pass before we do. Snow crosses the trail sideways. Wind tears at cloaks, pack covers, and any exposed opinion. By dusk, even Maeven agrees the abandoned toll refuge looks welcoming. This proves weather can accomplish miracles. The refuge is cut into the mountain beneath a shelf of black rock. Two rooms remain dry. A third contains half a roof and a dead tree. Nightshade claims the central chamber. Fennec takes the outer hall near the entrance. Sava chooses a sleeping place beside the secondary exit without explaining why. Caelen and I receive a former tollkeeper's room because Tomas says my knee needs space and Liora says nobody wants to hear Caelen pace all night.Caelen does not deny pacing. Four copper-set torches burn along the walls. Their flames gutter whenever the storm drives air beneath the door. A narrow mattress lies on a stone platform. Someone has left a throwing target carved into the opposite wall. Caelen checks the window slit,
*Isla* Joren screams until Rovan cuts the binding from his wrists. The rope falls away. He keeps screaming. Maeven kneels in the snow beside him, speaking his name until the sound breaks into breath. Vika wakes on the other side of the fire and crawls toward him. She does not touch him. Her hands remain open on the ground where he can see them. Nobody tries to restrain him again. Caelen releases my hand. He rises too quickly for his injured shoulder. Pain crosses his face, then disappears beneath control. He walks beyond the rock shelf and stops near the edge of the firelight. I do not follow. Not yet. Tomas finishes checking Joren and orders warm water. Torven takes first watch. Sava sits with the cipher under one palm, staring toward the western route as if Needle Pass might move while she sleeps. Snow begins in small, hard grains. I retighten my boot. The strap presses against swelling. My knee has developed a deep pulse of its own. My bruised ribs object whenever I le
