Beast in the Woods

The house wanted me dead.

While Silas argued with Rook in the doorway and Wren whispered from the hall, I saw my chance. The lights kept flickering and the walls groaned like they were in pain. Everyone was distracted. I grabbed the blanket, wrapped it around my naked body, and slipped through the side door nobody was watching. My bare feet hit cold stone, then wet grass. I ran.

Branches whipped my face as I crashed into the dark forest. My heart pounded so hard it hurt. I did not know where I was going. I just knew I had to get away from that house and those men before they broke me completely.

“Stupid,” I gasped between breaths. “You are so stupid, Ashe.”

Twigs tore at the blanket and scratched my legs. The woods felt alive. Wrong. Every shadow moved like it had teeth. I kept running anyway, lungs burning, feet bleeding.

Then I heard it. Wet snarls behind me. Heavy footsteps crashing through the undergrowth. Not Rook. Something worse. Twisted. A real predator from the deep woods.

I pushed harder. “Leave me alone!”

The thing answered with a hungry roar that shook the trees. It was close. Too close. I risked a glance back and saw glowing eyes and jagged shapes that should not exist. My foot caught on a root and I went down hard, tumbling into the dirt.

This was it. I was going to die out here.

A massive shadow exploded through the trees right as the creature lunged. I covered my head and screamed. But the attack never came. Instead I heard a violent crash, a pained yelp, and then silence.

I peeked through my arms. A huge beast stood over me. Rook. No question. Bigger than any wolf should be, with too many sharp angles and fur that looked made of shadows. His eyes burned like hot embers. Blood dripped from his claws.

I scrambled backward. “Please. Do not kill me. I am sorry I ran.”

The beast tilted his giant head. He did not attack. Instead he stepped closer and lowered his massive body, curling around me like a living wall. His dark fur felt surprisingly soft against my bare skin. Heat poured off him, sinking straight into my freezing bones.

I stayed stiff at first, waiting for the pain. But none came. He just lay there, breathing deep and steady, shielding me from the rest of the woods. The true predator was gone. Only Rook remained.

“You are not going to eat me?” I whispered.

He made a low sound in his throat. Not a growl. Almost like a rumble of agreement. His huge head rested near my shoulder. Warm breath tickled my neck.

I should have been terrified. But the exhaustion hit me all at once. Hours of fear, the cold, the running. My body gave up. I pressed closer to his side without meaning to, soaking up the warmth.

“You are so warm,” I mumbled. “I hate that you feel safe right now.”

The beast stayed perfectly still while I shook against him. Slowly my eyes grew heavy. I fought it, but the steady heartbeat under all that fur pulled me under. I fell asleep curled against the monster who was supposed to be my nightmare.

When I woke up, the sky had lightened a little. Hours must have passed. The beast was gone. Instead Rook knelt over me in human form. He was completely naked, powerful muscles covered in scars, messy dark hair falling into his burning amber eyes. He stared at me with raw, naked need that made my stomach flip.

I sat up fast, clutching the torn blanket. “Rook?”

“Mine,” he said. His voice came out rough and broken, like he had not used it in years.

I froze. “You can talk.”

He leaned closer. “Mine,” he repeated. One big hand reached out and touched my cheek with surprising gentleness. His fingers trembled.

I swallowed hard. “You saved me. That thing out there would have killed me.”

Rook nodded slowly. His eyes never left my face. “Scent. Yours. Mine.”

The pull between us felt magnetic. Dangerous. I knew I should push him away, but my body remembered how warm he had been as a beast. I reached up and touched his chest. His skin burned hot under my fingers.

“You stayed with me all night,” I whispered. “Why?”

“Protect.” He growled the word. Then he leaned in and pressed his face against my neck, breathing me in. “Omega. Mine.”

I shivered as his lips brushed my skin. “This is crazy. I barely know you. You were half monster an hour ago.”

He pulled back just enough to look at me. “Not hurt you. Never.”

His hand slid down my arm, pushing the blanket away. The cool forest air hit my skin but his body heat kept me warm. He kissed my collarbone, then lower, tasting me with slow hunger. I gasped when his teeth grazed my nipple.

“Rook… wait.”

He looked up. Those amber eyes were wild but trying so hard to stay gentle. “Want you. Smell so good.”

I touched his face. My fingers shook. “You are scaring me and making me want you at the same time. That is not fair.”

He made a rough sound and kissed me properly. His mouth was hot and demanding but not cruel. I kissed him back before I could stop myself. Our bodies pressed together under the trees. His hands explored my back, my hips, pulling me closer until I straddled his thigh.

“Feel this,” he growled against my mouth. “Real. Not stone. Not visions. Me.”

I moaned softly as he rocked me against him. The tension built fast. His cock pressed hard against my stomach. I reached down and wrapped my hand around him. He shuddered and cursed under his breath.

“Good,” he rasped. “Touch. More.”

We kept touching and tasting, hands and mouths everywhere, breathing fast. Every growl he made sent heat straight through me. I felt drunk on it. Terrified and alive at the same time.

Just as I started losing control completely, distant howls echoed through the woods. Rook stiffened.

“House,” he said. “Calling. Danger.”

I pulled back, chest heaving. “We have to go back?”

He nodded, jaw tight. Reluctance clear on his face. He helped me stand and wrapped the torn blanket around me again. His hand stayed on my lower back, possessive.

“Mine,” he said one more time, softer. “Stay close.”

We started walking back toward Thornwood. My legs felt weak. My mind was a mess. I had run from the Alphas only to be saved by one, touched by one, and now I was walking back willingly.

The estate loomed ahead through the trees, windows glowing like eyes that had been waiting for us.

Rook stayed right beside me the whole way. His presence felt like both safety and a new kind of prison.

And I was not sure which scared me more.

  • The cursed alpha's dirty secret    The Keepers Rest

"I want to stop."The words hung in the air, heavy and strange. Kaela was standing at the edge of Sanctuary, her eyes fixed on the horizon. I moved to stand beside her, my heart clenching at the exhaustion in her voice."Stop what?" I asked."Everything," she said. "The traveling. The teaching. The fighting. I'm so tired, Father. I've been fighting my whole life."I looked at her, really looked at her. She was thirty-five now, but she looked older. The years of struggle had worn her down, carved lines into her face that shouldn't have been there yet."What would you do instead?" I asked. She was silent for a long moment, her eyes still fixed on the horizon. "I don't know. I've never thought about it. I've never had time to think about it.""Then think about it now," I said. "What do you want, Kaela? Not what the circle needs. Not what the world needs. What do you need?"She turned to look at me, tears streaming down her face. "I need to rest. I need to be still. I need to stop running

  • The cursed alpha's dirty secret    The Book of Light

"The book is writing itself."Kaela's voice was filled with wonder. She was sitting at the desk in the library, the manuscript she had been working on spread out before her. But something was different. The pages were glowing, the words shifting and changing on their own."What do you mean, writing itself?" I asked, moving to stand beside her."Look," she said, pointing at the page. "I wrote this chapter yesterday. But now it's different. There are new words. New stories."I looked at the page and saw it. The words were indeed new, telling stories I had never heard before. Stories of keepers from distant lands. Stories of circles we had never known."The book is connected to the circle," I said. "It's recording everything. Every keeper. Every circle. Every act of love.""How is that possible?" Wren asked, joining us."The first keepers," I said. "They must have created it. A book that would write itself. A book that would record the history of the light."We watched as the pages fille

  • The cursed alpha's dirty secret    The First Keepers Speak

"We have waited so long to tell our story."The old man's voice was fragile, worn thin by centuries of silence. He was sitting by the fire in the great hall of Sanctuary, the other first keepers gathered around him. We sat at their feet like children, hungry for every word."Tell us," Kaela said. "Tell us everything."The old man looked at her, his ancient eyes softening. "You remind me of someone I knew long ago. Someone brave. Someone who gave everything for the people she loved.""Who was she?" Kaela asked."My daughter," he said. "Her name was Aria. She was the first keeper. The one who created the circle."The fire crackled, and the first keepers bowed their heads in memory. I felt the warmth pulse around us, connecting us to something ancient and sacred."What happened to her?" Wren asked gently."She died," the old man said. "She died creating the circle. She gave her life so that others could live.""I'm sorry," Kaela whispered."Don't be," the old man said. "She chose her pat

  • The cursed alpha's dirty secret    The Day the Light Wept

"Something is wrong with the garden."Kaela's voice was sharp with alarm. She was standing in the center of the garden of light, her hands pressed against the glowing earth. I moved to stand beside her, my heart pounding in my chest."What do you mean?" I asked."The flowers," she said. "They're dimming. The light is fading."I looked and saw it. The flowers that had once blazed with warmth were growing pale. The glow that had filled the garden was flickering like a candle in the wind."How is that possible?" Wren asked, rushing to join us. "The circle is complete. The light is everywhere.""Something is draining it," Kaela said. "Something is taking the warmth."I closed my eyes and reached for the circle, for the connection that bound us all together. I could feel it, but it was weaker than before. Something was wrong."There's a sickness in the light," I said. "Something is corrupting it.""What kind of sickness?" Lyra asked."I don't know," I said. "But we need to find out before

  • The cursed alpha's dirty secret    The New Keepers

"They're coming. More of them than we ever imagined."Kaela's voice was calm, but I could hear the excitement underneath. She was standing at the entrance of Sanctuary, her eyes fixed on the horizon. I moved to stand beside her, my heart swelling with pride."Who's coming?" I asked."Everyone," she said. "People from every corner of the world. They've heard about the light. They want to be part of it."I looked out at the horizon and saw them. Dozens of figures, then hundreds, walking toward us. They came from every direction, drawn by the light that now covered the world."We need to prepare," Wren said, joining us. "We need to make room for all of them.""The garden will provide," I said. "The light will provide. We don't have to worry.""How can you be so sure?" she asked.I looked at her, at the woman I loved more than anything. "Because we built this together. And together, we can do anything."The newcomers arrived in waves, their faces full of wonder and hope. They had traveled

"Something is happening to the garden."Elara's voice carried a note of urgency I hadn't heard in years. She was standing in the center of the garden of light, her hands pressed against the glowing earth. I watched from the warmth, from the circle, from everywhere and nowhere."What do you mean?" Wren asked, rushing to her side."The flowers," Elara said. "They're changing. Growing. Something is coming."Kaela moved to stand beside her mother, her face calm but alert. She had returned from her travels only weeks before, and already she seemed to sense that something important was about to happen."What kind of something?" Kaela asked."I don't know," Elara said. "But it feels like... completion. Like something that was started a long time ago is finally finishing."The villagers gathered around the garden, their faces full of wonder and curiosity. The flowers were indeed changing, growing taller, brighter, more alive."It's the circle," Lyra said, her voice barely a whisper. "The circ
