The drive was silent.

Rain tapped softly against the windows of the black SUV as it wound through the quiet streets of San Diego.

Meera sat with her arms folded, staring out of the window.

Grandma Rosa sat beside her, occasionally glancing at Grant in the front passenger seat.

No one spoke.

No one seemed willing to break the silence.

Twenty minutes later, the SUV slowed before a modern house tucked away on a cliff overlooking the ocean.

Tall gates slid open automatically.

Security cameras followed the vehicle as it entered.

Meera frowned.

"This is where you live?"

"For now," Grant replied. "I rented it while I'm in San Diego."

The SUV came to a stop.

One of Grant's security men hurried over and opened the door.

"Sir."

Grant nodded before turning to Rosa.

"Please."

Rosa stepped out first.

Meera followed, her eyes wandering over the property.

"This doesn't look like a rental."

Grant ignored the comment.

"Come inside."

---

The living room was elegant without being flashy.

Soft gray furniture.

A stone fireplace.

Large windows overlooking the ocean.

Everything was immaculate.

A housekeeper appeared almost immediately.

"Mr. Gonas."

"Maria, prepare two guest rooms."

"Of course, sir."

"And dinner."

"Right away."

Maria disappeared down the hallway.

Meera looked at Grant.

"You planned this awfully fast."

"I prefer being prepared."

She gave him a suspicious look.

"I've noticed."

Grant gestured toward the sofa.

"You should both sit."

"I'm fine."

"You've been standing for hours."

"I said I'm fine."

Grant sighed quietly.

"You are the most stubborn woman I've ever met."

"And you're the most controlling man I've ever met."

Grandma Rosa hid a smile.

"If the two of you are finished..."

They both looked at her.

"...I'd appreciate a cup of tea."

Grant's expression softened immediately.

"I'll have some brought in."

Meera noticed.

He had answered Rosa gently.

Much more gently than he ever answered her.

Interesting.

---

Later that evening...

Damien entered through the study carrying a tablet.

"We've reviewed the security footage."

Grant closed the office door behind him.

"Tell me."

"The shooter wasn't aiming at the crowd."

Grant remained silent.

"He had a clear shot."

"But?"

"He lowered the gun before firing."

Grant frowned.

"A warning."

"Exactly."

Damien zoomed in on the footage.

"The Romanos wanted to send a message."

Grant's jaw tightened.

"They know."

"They suspect."

"They know enough."

Damien nodded.

"Which means Meera is no longer just a civilian."

Grant looked through the glass wall separating the study from the living room.

Meera was helping Rosa set the dining table despite Maria's protests.

She laughed at something Rosa said.

For a brief second...

The room felt warm.

A feeling Grant had almost forgotten existed.

Damien followed his gaze.

"You can still walk away."

Grant didn't answer.

"If she leaves tonight, the Romanos may lose interest."

Silence.

"Grant."

Finally, Grant spoke.

"They fired a gun in the middle of a public festival."

"They missed."

"They wanted me to know they could reach her."

Damien looked down.

"And they succeeded."

Grant's eyes grew colder than Damien had seen in years.

"They've made a mistake."

"What kind?"

"They've given me a reason."

---

Meera wandered toward the bookshelf while waiting for dinner.

One framed photograph caught her attention.

A much younger Grant stood beside an older man with silver hair.

Neither of them smiled.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

"That's my grandfather."

Grant's voice startled her.

She turned.

"I wasn't snooping."

"I know."

She looked back at the photograph.

"You look... happier."

Grant studied the picture.

"I was twenty."

"What changed?"

He didn't answer immediately.

"Responsibility."

Meera tilted her head.

"Responsibility doesn't stop people from smiling."

"No."

"It changes what they smile about."

She looked at him for a long moment.

"You carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, don't you?"

Grant almost laughed.

If only she knew.

"It's heavy," he admitted.

Meera smiled gently.

"My grandma always says heavy things should never be carried alone."

Their eyes met.

Neither looked away.

For the first time since they met...

There was no argument.

No sarcasm.

Just silence.

Comfortable silence.

A knock on the front door shattered the moment.

One of the guards hurried inside.

"Boss."

Grant's expression hardened instantly.

"What is it?"

The guard handed him a small black envelope.

"It was left at the gate."

Grant opened it.

Inside was a single playing card.

The King of Spades.

No message.

No signature.

Only one sentence written across the bottom in neat black ink.

"Everything you love becomes mine."

Grant's face turned to stone.

Meera noticed the change immediately.

"What happened?"

He folded the note before she could read it.

"Nothing."

She knew he was lying.

And somewhere beyond the gates, hidden in the darkness, a pair of eyes watched the house through a camera lens.

The game had begun.
