Eva’s POV

The air in the quiet corner of the main kitchen was thick with the scent of simmering broth, crushed herbs, and roasting meats.

I stood near the wooden prep table, my eyes lowered as I carefully chopped fresh rosemary for Lady Eleanor’s evening soup. Beside me, Mrs. Gable moved with a cold, terrifying efficiency, stirring an iron pot over the hearth, her keys clinking softly with every step.

The silence between us was far worse than an outburst.

“I gave you my trust, Eva,” Mrs. Gable said softly, not even looking back at me as she stirred. “I saw a quiet, intelligent girl who needed honest work. And yet, you sneak off to the village market like a thief in the night.”

“I am truly sorry, Mrs. Gable,” I murmured, my knife slicing through the herbs with measured precision. “I did not mean to breach your trust.”

“Then tell me the truth.” Mrs. Gable commanded, turning around to face me, her sharp gray eyes locking onto mine. “What were you doing in the market? And do not tell me another story about a friend’s birthday.”

My chest tightened.

I’m running out of room to maneuver.

Before I could force another half-baked excuse past my lips, the swinging wooden door to the kitchen creaked open.

“Pardon the intrusion,” a bright, familiar voice called out cheerfully.

Lord Leo stepped into the kitchen, wearing a loose linen shirt with the collar unbuttoned and carrying an empty glass pitcher in his hand. He took a long look around the room, his eyes twinkling with light amusement.

Mrs. Gable immediately straightened her apron, dipping into a deep curtsy. “My Lord! Forgive us—the kitchen staff must have forgotten to refill the water carafe in your bedchamber.”

“Oh, nonsense, Mrs. Gable,” Leo replied smoothly, waving a dismissive hand as he walked toward the large stone water basin. “A little exercise does a man good. It’s healthy to do things for yourself once in a while.”

As he filled the pitcher, his gaze drifted across the room, catching my pale face and stiff posture before shifting to Mrs. Gable’s stern expression.

He read the room in a single second.

“I do not mean to pry, Mrs. Gable,” Leo said casually, resting an elbow against the wooden counter, “but it would bring me great pleasure if you would go easy on Eva here.”

Mrs. Gable blinked, surprised. “My Lord?”

“She is quite hard-working, isn’t she?” Leo continued, offering a warm, easy smile. “Some people find it difficult to discuss personal matters, especially when they are new to an environment. She doesn’t fully understand the rules and obligations of Valenridge Manor just yet.”

Mrs. Gable looked from Leo to me, her sharp expression softening just a fraction under his charm.

“You are quite right, My Lord.”

Then Leo turned his head to look directly at me. The playful warmth in his eyes shifted, settling into a surprisingly firm, authoritative look.

“However,” Leo added, his voice dipping into a steady tone, “you are not to leave the estate grounds without asking for permission first, Eva. Is that understood?”

“Yes, My Lord,” I said quickly, lowering my head in a deep, genuine curtsy. “I am so sorry, Mrs. Gable. I promise it will never happen again.”

Mrs. Gable let out a quiet sigh, nodding slowly. “Very well. Mind that you keep that promise.”

With a final bow to Leo, Mrs. Gable picked up her tray of spices and walked out toward the pantry, leaving the kitchen mercifully quiet.

I let out a long, shaky breath, leaning slightly against the table.

“Thank you, My Lord. Truly.”

Leo set the filled water pitcher down on the counter and crossed his arms, a slow, mischievous grin spreading across his face.

“You can thank me by telling me what you actually went to do in the market,” he said, raising a brow.

I looked up, caught off guard. “Is that so?”

“Absolutely,” Leo declared shamelessly. “I crave entertainment and good gossip. That is the only reason I stepped in—not because I thought they were actually going to fire you.”

A soft, breathless laugh escaped my lips before I could stop it.

“I went to see an old friend, My Lord. They were holding a small gathering.”

“Ah, a party!” Leo’s eyes lit up with delight. “Now that, I respect. I am a massive fan of parties myself.”

“So I’ve heard,” I remarked, a subtle spark of amusement in my voice as I swept the chopped herbs into a bowl.

Leo paused, tilting his head.

“You’ve heard?”

“Yes,” I said smoothly, looking up to meet his eyes. “The staff talks. I’ve heard you enjoy fine wine, loud music, and the company of beautiful women.”

“Everyone says that about me,” Leo chuckled, shaking his head with a dramatic sigh.

“You seem rather happy about that image of you,” I noted gently, keeping my tone light. “Though... that isn’t quite the impression you gave just now.”

Leo leaned in a fraction closer, his bright eyes locking onto mine with a sudden, captivating warmth.

“That,” Leo said softly, a genuine smile touching his lips, “is because I don’t want you to think that about me.”

My pulse skipped a single, quiet beat.

I offered him a small, unreadable smile, keeping my hands steady against the wooden counter.

Leo straightened up, picking up his water pitcher with a light wink. “I’ll let you get back to pretending you enjoy preparing soup. Have a pleasant rest of your day, Eva.”

“You as well, My Lord,” I replied softly.

I watched him slip out through the wooden door, his easy footsteps fading down the stone corridor.

Standing alone in the quiet kitchen, a wave of profound relief washed over me. Leo’s sudden arrival had saved me from complete disaster—but as I touched the hidden outline of the duplicate map inside my satchel, the cold reality of my situation slammed right back into focus.

I was playing a dangerous game.

Next time, there wouldn’t be a charming lord to step in and save me.

From this moment on, every step I took inside Valenridge Manor had to be absolute perfection.

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 57: UNRAVELED SECRETS

Eva’s POV I pressed my back flat against the cool stone wall of the alcove, holding my breath as Laura passed by. Her heavy silk skirts rustled against the floorboards before her footsteps finally faded down the corridor. Once the coast was clear, I looked down at the velvet cushion and parchment ledgers in my arms—the preparations for the gala would simply have to wait. I dropped the stack onto a nearby side table, turned on my heel, and quietly trailed after the guard Laura had instructed. I kept a discreet distance, watching him navigate the long passage toward the courtyard doors. I needed those letters. If Laura was plotting something against me—or against the family—I couldn't afford to remain in the dark. "You there! Halt," I called out, keeping my voice authoritative yet calm as I closed the distance between us. The guard stopped immediately, turning around and bowing his head. "My Lady? How may I assist you?" "I need your help with an urgent matter regarding

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 56: VOWS IN THE SHADOWS

Lady Eleanor’s POV The estate was wrapped in a suffocating, pitch-black silence. Slipping out of the grand bed, I made sure Arthur’s rhythmic breathing remained undisturbed before wrapping a dark woolen cloak over my shoulders. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as I crept down the back servants' stairs, slipping out into the cool, damp night air. I moved quickly toward the quiet edge of the courtyard, where the shadows swallowed the stone archways whole. A tall figure stepped out from the darkness. James. The moment his face came into view under the pale moonlight, the dam broke inside me. I rushed into his arms, burying my face into his chest as hot tears spilled down my cheeks. "James... oh, James, I am so sorry," I sobbed, my voice trembling with the heavy weight of my guilt. "I am so, so sorry I did this to us." James wrapped his arms around me tight, holding me against the chill of the night. He lifted a hand, gently wiping the tears from my cheeks

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 55: SHADOWS AND BARGAINS

Genevieve’s POV I didn't bother knocking. I simply pushed open the heavy mahogany doors to Leo’s private study and strode inside like I owned the place. Leo was sitting at his easel, shirtless, a smudge of dark charcoal dusting his collarbone. He froze, paintbrush suspended in mid-air, and glared at me over his shoulder with sheer annoyance. "Have you no bloody manners, Genevieve?" he snapped, grabbing a discarded tunic off the back of his chair and throwing it over his head. I leaned against the doorframe, folding my arms with a sly, triumphant smile. "Well, I used to... until I saw what you were trying to do with your brother's wife in the garden yesterday." Leo’s jaw tightened, his hazel eyes darkening instantly. "Are you going to keep dragging that out?" "I need a favor from you," I said, dropping the smug act and taking a step toward his desk. Leo let out a dry, bitter laugh, adjusting his shirt. "A favor? And why on earth would I do you a favor?" "Because you hav

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 54: FRAGILE ALIBIS

Lucian’s POVWarmth enveloped me before my eyes even opened. The heavy, suffocating paralysis had receded, leaving my body exhausted but functional once more. As my vision adjusted to the morning light filtering through the heavy drapes, I realized I was still on the hard floor, resting against someone. It was Eva. She was fast asleep, leaning against the side of the velvet armchair with her head tilted slightly toward mine.I stayed still for a long second, my gaze trailing over her features. Up close, without her sharp wit or guarded glares, she looked startlingly soft. Her dark lashes rested long against her cheeks, framing the fine, sculpted line of her jawline. I didn't mean to stare—I wasn't the kind of man to succumb to sentimentality—but I couldn't deny the striking composure of her face. Then reality hit me like a bucket of ice water. She saw everything. She had found me completely frozen, helpless, and hyperventilating on the floor. Anxiety spiked in my chest. Knowing

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 53: AN ANCHOR IN THE DARK

Eva’s POV The hallway outside Lucian’s bedchamber was quiet, but a lingering sense of unease pulled me toward his door. After the humiliating chaos in the garden with Leo and Genevieve, I needed to face him—to ground myself, or perhaps just to prove that I wasn't losing my mind. I pushed the heavy oak door open and stepped inside. The room was pitch-black, swallowed entirely by shadows. The fireplace had died down to faint, glowing embers, leaving the chamber cold and oppressive. Reaching for a match, I lit the wall sconces, allowing soft, amber light to flood the room. My gaze swept across the floor—and my heart instantly stopped. "Lucian?" I gasped. He was collapsed on the hardwood floor beside the velvet armchair. He wasn't moving. His body was completely still, his eyes wide, fixed unblinkingly on the dark ceiling above. Beside him lay the shattered remains of a glass, water pooling around the broken shards. Panic seized my chest. "Lucian! Lucian!" I rushed to his

  • The lords' maid   CHAPTER 52: FRAGILE ALIBIS

Eva’s POV Genevieve’s sharp voice cut through the dusk like a shattered blade, sending a cold, horrifying panic straight through my veins. I immediately scrambled away from Leo, pushing myself off the grass and stumbling to my feet. Leo stood up right beside me, smoothing down his coat with a hasty, awkward flick of his hands. The air between the three of us turned suffocatingly tense. Genevieve took a slow step closer, her hands placed on her hips, her expression a mix of sheer disbelief and growing peevishness. "That... is your brother's wife, My Lord," she spat, her eyes darting between Leo and me. "Have you both completely lost your senses?!" "No—no! That is not what happened at all!" I stammered, my voice trembling as heat rushed into my cheeks. "I tripped on the grass, and—and we just fell! It was an accident!" Genevieve raised a single, cynical eyebrow, her look making it abundantly clear that she didn't believe a word of my pathetic lie. Oh God. I couldn't even b
