Knight’s POV

I hadn’t planned on leaving home today. Everything necessary was already in motion, and all that was left was to watch them take over and continue the work the way it always had. The name Knight Edge in these fields was one people never got tired of hearing, so I assumed the sale and handover would go off without a hitch.

I had a name, a legacy to uphold, and falling short was not an option.

“Did the piece arrive on time?” I asked, my head falling back against the couch as I twirled the wine in my glass.

“I checked a few minutes ago, and yes—he’s there and has been introduced, boss,” Rowan my bodyguard replied sharply.

“Watch him closely, Rowan,” I said, setting the glass down. “He wasn’t my first choice for a gig this big, but it’s too late to switch him out now.”

“If I may ask, boss…” Rowan started, hesitation clear on his face. “Why pick him for such a huge takeover? It’s Saturn Finance, and someone like Conan as the piece—doesn’t seem like the best choice.”

A smirk found its way to my face. “Do you play chess, Rowan?”

He muttered a low, “No.”

“Then listen carefully,” I said. “In chess, there are pieces that are valuable—and those that are disposable. If you pay attention to Conan’s background, what kind of piece do you think he is?”

“His family is rich and well-connected, so he’s probably valuable, right?”

I shook my head with a deep chuckle. “His parents might be valuable, but he is disposable—whenever I want. I put him in that position because he’s the front I need for this business to work. A rich, spoiled heir whose parents helped him take over a major company. It’s less suspicious when the story fits.”

I walked over to the open window as Rowan shook his head. “You haven’t worked on a finance firm before, have you? Their accounts are harder to manipulate, so the last thing I want is anyone questioning the legitimacy of the takeover.”

He nodded in understanding.

“It should be fun, though,” I added, and his eyes widened.

“It’s been forever since you called anything fun,” Rowan said.

I let out a low laugh. “You know how it gets in our line of work. So when I find fun, I appreciate it.”

The wind licked my skin as I turned back toward the window.

Smiles weren’t common in my line of work, but I always managed to wear one no matter what I was doing. You’d be surprised how much a smile unsettles people, especially when their lives are in your hands. It was something my father taught me, and one thing I would never regret learning.

A smile—even while doing the vilest things.

There was no room for niceness. Everyone was ready to turn their blades on me the moment their money was threatened. I couldn’t fail. I never had. My foundation always delivered—just like I did.

“Boss!”

Someone burst into the room, hands bloody. Rowan stepped between us instantly as a frown creased my face.

“Did I not make it clear that you wipe the blood off before entering my space?” I asked calmly, my voice low.

His eyes widened in realization and before I could blink, Rowan had him on his knees.

“I’m sorry, boss,” he pleaded, wiping his hands on his clothes. “I was just excited. Mr. Saturn finally talked—the vault code is in the company.”

A smirk spread across my face as i took a step forward. “That information just saved you, Bob,” I said, stepping past him. “Next time, I won’t be generous.”

A stream of thanks followed as I continued. “Tell Rowan the details and go prepare my suit. Seems I’ll be congratulating Conan on his takeover today. Oh—and inform him I’ll be coming over. Later is better. It’s easier to catch him off guard.”

He nodded sharply as I walked off.

Taking over Saturn Finance was simple, nearly perfect. It would be flawless once I got the documents Saturn hid away.

I arrived at the building within minutes and stepped out, motioning for Rowan to stay back. “No need to follow me. I don’t want curiosity stirred—and with your size, that’s unavoidable. Call our piece and tell him I’m here.”

He nodded, and I walked off without another word.

I knew the blueprints of this place like the back of my hand, months of preparing for the takeover definitely didn’t go to waste.

As I approached Conan’s office, a woman walked past me. Her eyes widened in that brief second as she froze mid-step, staring at me. Clean-cut, poised, yet… alert. Not the type Conan usually surrounded himself with but i rolled my eyes regardless, So Conan was already bringing hoes into the office on day one.

I glanced back at her frozen form again before entering his office. Conan stood alert the moment I walked in.

“Welcome, boss!” He called out loudly making me roll my eyes yet again.

“You might as well announce to the world that you’re a figurehead, Conan.”i said with a frown as I approached him tapping his face lightly. “Do better, CEO.” I added tapping his face again before pulling away. I see you already had a girl over uhn??

He straightened his shirt muttering series of no’s. “It’s not like that, boss.”

I nearly chuckled watching him, how was he so sheltered but stupid. A dangerous combination.

“She’s just an employee,” he added quickly. “I wouldn’t do something that dumb this early.”

“I’m glad you know it’s dumb,” I replied. “Now check Mr. Saturn’s office for a folder labeled Vault. Bring it to my car downstairs immediately you find it. Quickly.”

He nodded sharply.

“I’ll be waiting,” I called as I walked out.

I was nearing the lower floor about to reach the entrance when I saw her again. I meant to pass by, but stopped when she froze once more.

Was she sick? Or did I really unsettle her that much? Why did she always freeze at the sight of me. I wasn’t that scary looking, at least at fist glance.

“You’re the girl from Conan’s office, aren’t you?” I asked, brows raised as i pushed further, So he is already surrounding himself with hoes on the first day? I pressed on just to get a feel of her.

She snapped back after a beat, “I’m not a hoe.”

Amusement flickered through me. The bite in her voice confirmed what I’d already suspected. I scanned her again—too clean, too composed like i thought the first time to be one of Conan’s usual distractions.

“Then cover yourself properly before you argue about it,” I said calmly, nodding to her exposed cleavage.

She fumbled with her buttons, flustered.

“Cute,” I muttered, a smirk tugging at my lips as I walked past her without another word.

I didn’t know who I was expecting when I heard the door open, maybe Conan or his secretary—but when my eyes landed on Rowan, my mouth fell open. His eyes widened as they landed on us too, and he immediately turned around.“I’m sorry, boss,” he called loudly. “I was only bringing the package you requested.”“And you couldn’t think to knock?” Knight snapped, his voice pulling me back into reality.I immediately stood up from his lap, ignoring his frown as I straightened my clothes.“I did knock,” Rowan said, much softer now. “I guess you were just too occupied to hear me.”A smirk spread across my face just as Knight stood up.“You can turn around now,” he said in a bored tone.Rowan turned back, a tiny smile on his face—and a flower bouquet in his hand.Wait. A flower bouquet?“Sorry for the disturbance once again,” Rowan said with a slight bow before walking over and handing the flowers to Knight, who collected them without a word.“You’re dismissed,” Knight said. “Don’t come up unles

“You’re so down bad,” Jean screamed the moment I stepped foot into his car the next morning.I saw all of this coming when I sent him that text last night, but I didn’t imagine he’d wait a full twelve hours just to vent in my face.“Cut the drama and let’s go,” I said with a laugh as I slipped on my seatbelt. He glared at me but turned on the engine regardless. “How did you make up with him already?” he asked as we pulled out of my front porch. “I literally dropped you here yesterday, so when did you guys even meet?”“He pulled up here like a few minutes after you left,” I said with a chuckle.Jean shook his head slightly. “Now that is commitment,” he said, laughing. “He followed us home after your little parking lot stunt.”I nodded, pouting slightly. “Anyways, we talked. He explained, and we sorted it out like civilized adults,” I said, wiggling my brows.Jean laughed. “Yeah, the same civilized adult that walked away from him like he had some sort of disease.”“I was pissed, okay,”

I still remained in my spot on the couch long after Knight had gone. I didn’t know that a decision that took me over five hours to make would be undone in less than ten minutes. He had a way with words, yes. His eyes felt like some sort of wormhole, pulling me in even when he wasn’t doing much. But ultimately, everything was my decision. And I decided to stick with him—even after telling myself not to. Which meant I was royally fucked. I even suggested a talking stage, so I couldn’t deny how I felt about him anymore. Even the anger I was supposed to be feeling was quenched the moment his lips met mine. Thankfully, I pulled myself together enough not to give in easily. I didn’t even walk him out on purpose, just so he’d know I was serious. If I was really going to do this—if I was going to act on my feelings and on the fact that he felt the same then I had to set standards from the start. I wouldn’t be ignored twice. No man does that to Aria. “I’ve been standing here for close

Knight’s POVI stepped out of Aria’s house with mixed feelings. On one hand, I was relieved I had sorted out the issue. On the other, I wondered if she was still mad at me, seeing as she refused to see me out. I questioned why I was going this far to please her, to make it up to her, and I couldn’t come up with a proper reason. It just felt right to do it. I hated the thought of her saying she was fine staying away from me.I walked back to my car slowly.“Let’s head back home,” I said to Rowan, and he nodded, starting the engine immediately. The ride was quiet as I pondered how our interaction would go forward. She wanted us to talk, to get to know each other—but what was there to know about me? Could I even tell her what my real job was? Where I got my money from? I let out a low chuckle as I thought about how insane all of this was.“Is everything alright, boss?” Rowan asked sharply, watching me through the mirror.“Do I not look alright?” I asked, and he shook his head.“I was jus

“I don’t want you,” I repeated, this time more certain, and I felt Knight’s hands drop from my waist. “What?” he asked, his eyes not leaving mine. “I don’t want you, Knight. Not if you’re going to continue this way—constantly pushing me away and only reaching out when you feel like it. I’m not asking you to date me,” I added sharply. “I don’t think I want to date you yet too, but if you’re slightly interested—which it seems like you are, with all this,” I said, pointing at our position, “then you need to do a lot better for us to even have the slightest chance. I have no issue walking away right now if this is the way you’ll be going forward.” I paused steadying my voice. “No one wants a nonchalant man… no matter how hot he is,” I finished, surprising myself. I never imagined I could say something so cool off the top of my head. Damn—Knight was making me do so many new things. Silence filled the room for a second before he gently slid me off his legs and placed me beside him

I was shocked when my eyes landed on him, but not shocked enough to stop walking. After hearing him pick up that call with Conan, I spent the rest of the workday trying to forget about him, because it seemed like he had done the same. So whatever brought him here was now none of my business. I walked past, heading straight to Jean’s car. “Jean,” I called calmly. “Open the car. Let’s head home.” I waited until he walked over, then slipped inside, forcing myself not to look in his direction. “Are you not going to at least say hi?” Jean asked. I shrugged. “Just drive already.” He turned on the engine, and we moved out of the parking lot without another word. I finally let out a breath when we hit the highway. “That was crazy, even for you, Aria,” Jean said with a chuckle. “You literally walked past him like you had never met before. He must be feeling so disappointed.” I sighed. “He deserved it—and a lot more after ghosting me for days without any valid reason. I was worried lik
