[ SAMANTHA'S POV ]

"Inside. Now!" David barked. His big wet hand squeezed my wrist like an iron band, pulling me up the cold front steps.

"Let go of me!" I screamed, digging my heels into the wet stone.

It was like trying to stop a moving truck. My wet shoes slipped across the floor, but David didn't even slow down. He kicked open the heavy front door, pulled me inside, and slammed the door shut behind us.

BOOM!

The heavy sound echoed through the high ceiling of the big hallway. The loud noise

[ DAVID'S POV ]My breathing was fast, rough, and heavy in the quiet room. Rainwater kept dripping down from my wet coat, hitting the cold floor with small clicking sounds."You think I am scary?" I asked, my voice low and dry.Samantha did not answer me with words. She stood pinned against the wall, her chest moving up and down fast. Her eyes were big, dark, and full of anger as she stared straight into mine. She did not look down. She did not look away. She stood her ground, ready for another fight.I looked down at her hands and arms. The red marks from my big fingers were still on her skin where I had held her against the wall.A monster. That was what she saw when she looked at me. I could feel it in the way her body stayed stiff against the wall, ready for another argument, ready for another locked door.My mind went back to everything that had happened before today. She had no idea about the hard work I did behind her back to keep her safe from trouble. She did not know about t

The loud noise of the rain was suddenly cut off, replaced by the sound of our fast, heavy breathing. Rainwater dripped off our wet clothes, pooling on the expensive rug below our feet. Before I could turn around, David grabbed my shoulders and shoved me back. My back slammed hard against the cold wooden wall. He stepped right up into my face, his broad shoulders blocking the light from the chandelier. He grabbed both of my wrists and pinned them flat against the wall above my head."Release me, David!" I yelle

[ SAMANTHA'S POV ]"Touch her again," David said, his low voice vibrating with a dangerous promise, "and you won't walk off this property."Julian did not listen. His eyes flared with a desperate, wild rage as he reached his arm straight back through the iron bars, his wet fingers snapping toward my dress collar to shove the paper check into my hands."She is coming with me, Kingsley!" Julian screamed through the pouring rain.David did not waste another word.He moved so fast his heavy shadow blurred across the wet gravel path. Before Julian’s fingers could even touch my sleeve, David stepped straight up to the metal fence, reached out his massive right hand, and slammed his thick fingers directly around Julian’s throat.THUD.The metal fence rattled violently as David yanked Julian forward, pinning his neck flat against the iron spears. Trapped rainwater blasted off the ivy leaves above, splashing across both of their faces.Julian let out a wet, strangled gasp. The blue check slipp

[ SAMANTHA'S POV ]I stared down at the blue slip of paper fluttering between Julian's wet fingers. Raindrops hit the glossy surface, smudging his fresh signature into a dark, messy blur across the bottom corner of the check. The paper shook slightly in the cold wind, but Julian kept his grip tight, holding it out like a lifesaver to a drowning woman.Julian leaned his body harder against the cold metal bars of the perimeter fence, his breath puffing out in thick white clouds against the chilly afternoon air. The damp wind whipped through the open glass doors of the orchid greenhouse behind me, carrying the sharp, heavy scent of wet soil, crushed leaves, and fresh rainwater. My eyes stayed locked on the piece of paper hovering inches from my chest."Take it, Sam," he urged, his voice dropping into that soft, gentle tone he had used since the moment he crawled through the broken fence line. "It's a clean slate. You don't owe David anything. You don't owe your father a single thing afte

[ SAMANTHA'S POV ]The glass door of the orchid greenhouse stood open, letting in the cool, damp air. Inside, rows of purple and white petals hung heavy with water droplets, their sweet, thick scent clinging to the back of my throat.I sat on the edge of a wet stone bench just outside the glass framing, resting an old leather-bound book across my knees. Soft afternoon rain tapped steady rhythm against the glass roof above. My thumbs traced the worn spine of the book. Underneath my high-collared cotton dress, my skin prickled with cold nerves. Every time a tree branch swayed or a shadow stretched across the gravel path, my chest tightened. I slid my right hand into my dress pocket, letting my fingers wrap around the small, hard rectangle of the burner phone Daniel had slipped to me.Three days.I stared down at the black-and-white print on the page, but the words blurred together. Just hold out for three more days, and Daniel gets me out.CRACK.A heavy branch snapped near the dense iv

  • The mafia ceo's substitute bride    Chapter 45: Buying the Press

[ DAVID'S POV ]My phone hit the leather armrest with a soft thud as Marcus tapped away at his tablet. Outside the dark Maybach windows, fifty reporters shoved against each other. Microphones waved in the air, and camera lights flashed against the black glass."The wire transfer cleared," Marcus said. His voice was low, but his fingers did not stop moving across the screen. "Fifty-one percent of Apex Media Group is yours. You own the controlling stake in The Daily Herald.""Pull up to the front doors," I told the driver."David, wait," Marcus said, leaning forward. "The board hasn't even finished their emergency meeting. The papers aren't signed""They don't have a choice," I said. I grabbed the door handle and pushed it open. "I bought their debt. I bought their stock. That means I own this building."The moment my leather shoe hit the concrete, a wall of noise slammed into my ears."Mr. Kingsley! Is it true your wife drugged her sister?""Did Samantha fake the entire marriage?""How
