Chapter 3.
Evelyn’s POV.
Walls of the hospital room felt like they were closing down on me.
I felt like I was suffocating, unable to catch my breath. My fingers clutched the coarse fabric of my hospital gown, desperate to anchor myself.
But my legs trembled beneath me, and a searing ache spread through my chest. It wasn't physical pain, but the crushing weight of betrayal, threatening to consume me whole.
I shouldn't be here, listening to their conversation but my legs couldn't move no matter how hard I tried. I pressed my back against the cold wall.
My heart pounded against my ribs as I heard their voices. Their tone was infuriatingly casual, utterly cruel, as if nothing ever happened.
Olivia's voice dripped with scorn and amusement. "She's more useless now than ever," she sneered. "Not only is she insane, but also barren. Our child will inherit everything.”
The moment I heard those words, I froze on the spot. A cold shivers run down my spine, spreading through my lips like ice.
Barren.
The words hit deep, ripping through the pain I already feel. I bite down on my lips so hard I taste blood, but I don't feel it. The pain in my chest is worse.
The irony wasn't lost on me. Ethan had always been adamant that we shouldn't have children, citing it would rip off our youth.
Yet, he and Olivia didn't hesitate to call me barren. The word cut deep.
“You think she's really lost her memory?” My husband's voice follows. He sounds amused, like this is all some games to him.
“She is too weak to lie.” Olivia replied, her voice dripping with satisfaction. “She will sign whatever we put in front of her. By the time she realized, the law firm would’ve been in your name and that's all that mattered.”
A wave of nausea washed over me, my stomach twisting into knots. My law firm? The very company my parents had poured their hearts and souls into, building it from the ground up?
The only legacy they'd left me, their only child?
The same law firm I had sacrificed everything for? My sweat, my tears. It all went into that firm. It was my dream, my life, and now they want to take it from me? They wanted me dead because of my firm.
My head reeled, spinning with the crushing weight of my discovery. It wasn't just the betrayer. The realization that they had both betrayed me at once.
I squeezed my eyes shut, gripping the wall behind me. Trying to hold in the scream building in my throat. I can't break. Not now. Not in front of them.
I swallowed my breath and breathe. Slowly, I forced myself to relax and I pretend. I need to approach them like I have no idea of what’s happening.
So I step closer to them and their conversation cuts off. Olivia's eyes widened slightly before she could lose her expression. Plastering a fake smile on her face. My husband did the same.
The same man I spent five years of my life with. He gave me a carefully measured look on me.
What did Olivia have that I lacked?
“Honey,” he whispered, stepping toward me like a loving husband. If I hadn't known the truth, I would have blushed. “Are you okay?”
My gaze flickered between them. My body stiffened, as if I struggled to recall something.
“I…I..guess so,” my words stumbled, as I tried to keep up with my pretence.
Olivia let out a soft, relieved laugh, stepping closer.
“Don't worry,” she smiled, reaching for my hand like a concerned friend. “We are here for you.”
Her Words feel like acid against my skin. I wanted to scream. To tear this room apart, to throw everything in their faces and watch their fake smiles shatter. But I couldn't.
A smile didn't reach my eyes and spread on my face. “Do I know you from anywhere?” I raised an eyebrow, my eyes piercing into her skin.
She exchange a meaningful glance with Ethan before directing her gaze back to me.
“Yes of course, I’m Olivia, your childhood friend,” she smiled and I nodded. I didn’t bother to press further.
“Let's take you back to your ward.” Ethan says.
They both grabbed me by both said, gently leading me back to the ward with a smile.

That evening, the doctor arrived to finalize my discharge. Following a brief discussion, I was finally cleared to head home.
A nurse handed me a file containing my medical records. As I took it, my husband - the man who had tried to kill me - placed a hand on my shoulder, his touch feigning gentleness and care.
Meanwhile, Olivia's dagger-like glances sliced through me, her eyes flashing with malice every few seconds.
“We should go home now, honey,” he murmured trying to help me up but before he could get the chance, the door burst open.
A tall man strides inside with two bodyguards. His presence is enough to make the world around him smaller.
His dark suit is perfectly tailored, hugging is broad, framed like a second skin. His black hair falls slightly over his forehead but not enough to hide his sharp, dangerous features.
His lips are curled into something close to amusement. But it was his emerald eyes that froze me in place.
Who was he?
The moment his gaze flickered to mine, I felt a jolt of electricity. A slow, smirk tugged at his lips, like he's been waiting for this moment.
He was terrifying yet attractive.
"You're finally awake," he said, his low, deep voice sending shivers down my spine and butterflies fluttering in my stomach.
“Who the hell are you?” Ethan demanded.
But the man ignored Ethan as he took a step closer, closing the distance between us.
And he said; “I’m glad you’re awake now, my wife.”
Chapter 4.Evelyn’s POV.“My wife.”My mouth opened wide, what the heck was going on? Bang!I whipped my head around, my eyes locking onto the source of the noise. Ethan's face was a deep, fiery red, a vein bulging at his temple like a warning sign. His expression was a mix of shock and anger. “You liar!” Ethan roared, his hand twisting into a fist. “She’s my wife.”The man beside me remained calm and composed, utterly unfazed by Ethan's anger. He tilted his head slightly, an amused smirk dancing on his lips, his eyes glinting with a hint of mockery. “I'm lying?” he asked. “That's rich coming from a man who's trying to claim something that was never his to begin with.”Ethan lunged forward, his fists clenched, but before he could reach him, two guards in black suits seized Ethan and Olivia, pinning them in place with an unyielding grip.“Let go of me.” Ethan yelled, struggling against the guard. “You have no right to do this.”Olivia shrieked, trying to claw at the guard's hand,
Chapter 5.Evelyn’s POV. The car ride home was suffocating. Ethan drove, his grip firm on the wheel, but his eyes flicked to me in the rearview mirror. Every few seconds, it wasn't a look of concern, it was something else: like he was studying me. I shifted my gaze, trying to ignore the way my skin prickled under his stare. The leather felt cold against my fingers as I gripped the edge of the seat, my knuckles turning white.Olivia sat beside him, completely unbothered, scrolling through her phone. I forced my breathing to stay even, my hands resting calmly on my lap. If they suspected anything, I was as good as dead. When we pulled up to the house.Ethan opened the door for me. “Let's get you settled down, honey, you need a lot of rest.” He smiled genuinely. I nodded as he guided me to our mansion. Olivia walked behind us. Ethan led me down the hall, he stopped in front of the guest room door.He pushed the door open. “This is your room.” I wanted to yell at him right now,
Chapter six.Evelyn's POV.I stood at the front door, about to knock, when it suddenly swung open. Ethan wrapped me in a tight hug."Where did you go?" he asked, lifting my chin. "I was worried sick about you."Before, I would have thought Ethan couldn't live without me for a second. That's why he's acting like this. But now, knowing the truth, I felt numb. I forced a smile."I went for a walk," I said. "I was bored, and you two were still asleep."Ethan nodded. "Next time, don't leave without me, okay?"I nodded, and he stepped aside to let me in. My eyes scanned the room and landed on the wall where our wedding pictures used to hang. They were gone. I couldn't help but chuckle.Despite losing my memories he couldn't pretend to leave it there. Was I that bad? Olivia rushed over and hugged me tightly. "Oh my, I was so worried!"I smiled again, noticing a glance exchanged between Olivia and Ethan. We sat down at the table, and breakfast was served. But I was hesitant to take a bite. W
Chapter Seven.Evelyn's POV.Ethan always complained about how he felt trapped, how he feared marrying a powerful woman like me. He worried my parents would reject him without hesitation. I agreed with him, thinking he made sense. So, I invested heavily in him, almost risking my law firm's financial stability, to help him start his own company. But now, I felt a stinging pain in my heart. I bit my lip hard, fighting back tears. Ethan snapped his fingers in front of my face, concern etched on his face. "Babe, are you okay?" he asked.I nodded, unable to speak. If I opened my mouth, I knew I'd burst into tears. The pain felt suffocating, like a heavy weight crushing my chest. He led me to his office, and I sat on the couch, trying to compose myself. "How did you manage to find my company?" he asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.I hesitated before answering, "Well, I found your business card."He nodded, smiling, and I couldn't help but wonder if I really knew this man. Was I foo
Chapter Eight.Evelyn's POV."Oh my, what happened to your hair?" Olivia gasped as I entered the sitting room. Ethan's eyes darted to me, and I flashed a bright smile."You like my new look?" I asked, trying to sound casual. "This is how I want to look now."Ethan's face darkened, and he grabbed me roughly. "How could you cut your hair without my permission?" he barked.Olivia intervened, her voice firm. "Ethan, let go of her."Ethan released me, his eyes apologetic. "I'm sorry," he muttered, before darting a glance at Olivia and rushing upstairs.Olivia walked up to me, concern etched on her face. "Are you okay?" she asked, helping me sit down.I nodded, still staring at her. I felt like strangling her to death. I wanted to ask her how I had hurt her so badly that she couldn't forgive me, that she had to go to such extremes to get back at me."Ethan doesn't like it when someone cuts their hair," Olivia said, as if trying to justify Ethan's behavior.I knew she was right. Ethan had a
Chapter nine.Alex’s POV.I gazed at Evelyn's picture, my fingers drumming against my desk as I twirled my pen. It was only a matter of time before I achieved my plan and Evelyn is important to its success. That's why I made sure she survived that accident. If anyone could kill her, it was me. I'd been watching her every move since she ruined my life. I knew everything about her - her marriage, her happiness, her every step.As I watched her live her life, I seethed with anger. Every day, I suffered because of her mistake. I wanted revenge, but I waited for the perfect moment to strike. And then, I discovered that her husband was trying to kill her. I had my secretary inform Evelyn that her husband was trying to kill her, but she was already in the car and got into an accident. Luckily, I was in the area and "saved" her.How could she think of dying after ruining my life? I took her to the hospital, and when I heard she lost her memories, I was momentarily thrilled. I thought I c
Chapter ten.Evelyn's POV.I wondered what kind of person Alex was? No single empathy. How could I tell him that Ethan was married to someone else and he just shrugged it off like it was no big deal? It wasn't his fault, really - he was just lucky I needed his help.I just need to get done with this so we don't cross paths. Also there was no way I could keep paying him now that we were partners.I pushed open the front door, removed my coat, and dropped it on the chair. Earlier, when Ethan left for work, I told Olivia I wanted to go for a stroll. She offered to follow me, but I declined, knowing I was actually heading to Alex's office. Now, feeling exhausted, I decided to take a rest. As I passed Ethan's room, I was startled by a woman's cry of pain.Immidiately I pressed my ears against the door and listened to the sound, confirming it was coming from Olivia. And then I heard Ethan's voice. I couldn't help but glance at my wristwatch. It was past twelve and he was back way too ear
Chapter Eleven.Evelyn's POV."Evelyn, are you okay? "Olivia's voice broke my trance.I hesitated, forcing myself to focus on her. "Yeah, I'm fine," I replied, trying to sound casual.Olivia nodded, eyeing me skeptically. "You seem lost in thought, staring at your phone."I chuckled awkwardly, trying to brush it off. "It's nothing, really."But my mind was still reeling from the message I'd just received. Alex wanted to go on a date? It made no sense. We weren't even friends. What could he possibly achieve from this? If I said no, then he won't help me out, but if I said yes how am I going to discard Olivia and Ethan?I'm stuck in this house with these bastards. As I sat there, pretending to listen to Olivia's chatter, my mind was racing.Olivia said, "Let me leave you to rest. If you need anything, let me know." I nodded and forced a smile, saying "Thank you." She closed the door, and I collapsed onto the bed, letting out a tired sigh. I was frustrated that Alex was causing me mo
Chapter forty five.Evelyn's POV."What's happening? Where's Alex?" I demanded, my voice rising in panic. Lucas whispered, "Evelyn, you need to calm down," but I shook my head fiercely."No, don't tell me to calm down. I need to know what's happening," I insisted. The doctor cleared his throat, hesitating before asking, "Are you his fiancée?" I nodded quickly, not caring about explanations – I just needed to know about Alex. The doctor glanced at Lucas, who gave a slight nod, before turning back to me. I swallowed hard, my heart racing with fear. The doctor's serious expression made my anxiety spike, and I braced myself for the worst."Miss Evelyn," the doctor began, but I cut him off, my patience worn thin. "Doctor, please, just tell me what's wrong with Alex." He nodded solemnly."You have to be strong," he said, his words hanging in the air like a threat. "Strong for what?" I pressed, my eyes darting to Lucas, who wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight."Evelyn, calm d
Chapter forty four.Evelyn’s POV."Alex!" My body crumpled, and I fell to my knees, my eyes fixed on him. My hands trembled as I reached out, barely grazing his form. "A...Alex," I whispered, my voice cracking.Ethan's voice cut through the haze, "Hands up!" I didn't respond, lost in the moment, my mind reeling."Hands up!" he barked again, his fingers wrapped tightly around the gun. I slowly raised my hands, a single tear rolling down my cheek."Say your last wish," he said, his voice cold. I nodded, taking a shaky breath. "Let me...," I began, but my voice faltered, swallowed by emotion. "Let me take Alex to the hospital, and then you can kill me," I pleaded.Ethan's response was a burst of maniacal laughter, the sound sending chills down my spin. "You think you can deceive me?" he sneered, his voice dripping with malice. "Say your last wish," he barked again. But my attention was hijacked as my eyes widened, locking onto a figure behind him – Lucas. My heart skipped a beat as
Chapter forty three.Evelyn's POV. But as I opened it, my eyes locked onto Ethan's, and I froze, jar slipping from my grasp."Surprised, surprised, surprised," Ethan said, his voice dripping with amusement.I took a step back, swallowing hard. "Ethan, I can explain," I said, hands raised in a futile attempt to placate him.But he just shook his head, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "I'm not interested in anything," he said, advancing towards me.I let out a loud scream for help, but there was only silence. "Help!" I screamed again, and Ethan burst into laughter."Someone help, help, help," he mocked, his voice echoing through the hallway.I swallowed hard, my heart racing as sweat trickled down my face. Ethan closed in on me, his body trapping me against the wall as he placed his hands on either side of my head."Longest time, dearest wife," he sneered, his breath hot against my skin.I scoffed, defiance rising up. "I'm not your wife," I spat, but my words were met
Chapter two.Alex's POV.I tried to pull my hand away as she slept, but she gripped it tightly and whispered, "Don't go." A smile spread across my face."I'm not going anywhere," I said, gently kissing her hand. The gesture brought back memories. I recalled how Evelyn would always ask me to stay by her side when she was scared.I wondered how she could forget about our close bond so easily. We had been childhood friends from around six to eight years old, but then we moved away from the city. When we returned, she didn't remember me, but I recalled every detail about her – her smile, her laughter, and her fears. My eyes drifted to her, and I whispered, "Why does Jake have to be your father? We could've been happy by now, just you and me."I kissed her hand again, feeling a mix of emotions. With Ethan on the loose, her fear was justified. It was only a matter of time before he might target her again.I needed to take care of the Ethan situation and ensure I didn't lose the court cas
Chapter forty one.Evelyn's POV.The fork slipped from my hand, clattering to the plate. "You're joking, right?" I asked, disbelieving.Alex shook his head, his expression grim. He spoke briefly into the phone, "I'll call you back. Thanks for the information," before hanging up.I stood up, my mind reeling. "Ethan escaped from prison," Alex had said. The words echoed in my head, and I felt like I was in a daze.Alex called out to me, "Evelyn, Evelyn," but I wasn't listening. I was about to climb the stairs when he grabbed me, spinning me around aggressively. I turned to face him, but my brain was blank, and I couldn't read his expression."Talk to me, Evelyn," Alex said, but I just stared at him, trying to process the news. Ethan's escape meant I was in trouble, and I felt a wave of fear. I gasped.Alex called out to me again, but I didn't respond. He gently tapped my face, trying to snap me out of it. "Evelyn, listen to me," he said. That's when I reached out and hugged him tightl
Chapter forty.Evelyn's POV.The next day, Alex and I went to court, where I filed a notice to reopen the case. The reaction was one of surprise, with many assuming my father had ensured justice for the innocent. Little did they know, my hands were tied.Alex shadowed me everywhere, ensuring I didn't do anything unexpected. After we finished in court, we stepped outside, and I was surprised to see paparazzi waiting. My eyes narrowed at Alex, who simply smirked, and I clenched my fists."What’s the meaning of this?" I asked, annoyed. But he simply ignored my existence. Involving the paparazzi wasn’t necessary. Alex stepped closer, wrapped his arm around my shoulders, and whispered, "Smile."I adjusted my sunglasses, forced a smile, and Alex held my hand as the paparazzi swarmed us with questions. "Miss Evelyn, are you really defending Alex?" one of them asked. I ignored the question and pushed through the crowd.Another reporter asked, "You defended your ex-husband on murder charg
Chapter thirty nine.Evelyn's POV.My head felt heavy as I struggled to open my eyes. Finally, I managed to pry them open and found Alex sitting across from me. As soon as he saw I was awake, he stood up and walked over to my bed."How are you feeling?" he asked. I tried to sit up, but he gently held me down. He removed a cold towel from my forehead, and I raised my eyebrows in surprise. My gaze met Alex's, and he explained, "You fainted last night." I could only manage a soft "ohh" before collapsing back onto the bed, feeling overwhelmed. Being around him felt awkward. Then, Alex said, "Open your mouth," and my gaze snapped to him. He was holding a thermometer, which he placed under my tongue. After a moment, he removed it."Your temperature is normal now," he said, and I nodded, laying back down. I could sense he wanted to say something more, but I wasn't interested. Given our situation, I didn't want to be friends with Alex – ever."Sorry," Alex said suddenly, and I turned to
Chapter thirty Eight.Evelyn's POV.He took a step closer, and I backed away until my back hit the wall, trapping me. My heart was racing wildly as Alex loomed over me, his eyes blazing with a cold intensity.I didn't realize I'd whispered "please" until the word was already out, a desperate plea in the face of his unyielding stare.Alex slammed his hands against the wall above my head, his eyes blazing with fury. "What are you doing here?" he thundered. I swallowed hard, sweat trickling down my face despite the chill in the room."Answer me!" he barked. I squeezed my eyes shut, whispering "please" – the only word I could manage. Seeing Alex like this terrified me. I wondered what he would do to me – would he hit me, humiliate me, or something worse?Suddenly, Alex swept me off the floor, dragging me abruptly. "Alex, please!" I begged, but he didn't respond.”Alex! Please don't do this”The maid stood by, watching me with pity in their eyes as Alex's grip held me firm.I stood bef
Chapter thirty seven.Evelyn's POV."Did I say something wrong?" I asked, noticing her sudden change in expression. She shook her head, still frowning, and dropped the napkin she was holding."What do you want from his room?" she asked, her tone guarded. I hesitated, rubbing the back of my neck. "Nothing," I lied, but she clearly didn't believe me.She stared at me knowingly but didn't press the issue. "You can access most rooms, but the boss's room is off-limits," she said."Why?" I asked, feeling a surge of frustration. "I'm not a criminal, if there's anyone who is then he's…." I bit my tongue, realizing I was about to reveal too much.I took a deep breath, composing myself. I opened my eyes and forced a smile, trying to diffuse the tension."I'm sorry about that," I mumbled, trying to appease her. She smiled and said, "It's fine." But I felt like screaming – how could it be fine? She took my hands, her expression softening. "You're like a daughter to me, which is why I'm warn
