"You’re breathing too fast, Nora. Slow down before you pass out."

Cole’s voice is the only thing keeping me from spinning off the edge of the world. We are huddled in the back of the helicopter, the roar of the rotors vibrating through my teeth. My lungs feel tight, like they’ve been scrubbed with wire wool. Every time I close my eyes, I see that white ceiling in Switzerland. I feel the cold rush of the IV. I can still taste the tin on the back of my tongue.

I look at Theo. He’s slumped against

The seminar room is exactly as I remember it. The round table. The heavy oak chairs. The smell of old books and floor wax.I sit in my usual spot. My notebook is open, my pen ready. The other students are there, whispering about the weekend, complaining about the workload. Everything is normal. Everything is perfect."Let’s begin," Dr. Vass says, taking his seat at the head of the table. He looks at me, his eyes encouraging. "Nora, why don't you start us off? Your final chapter on the physics of forgetting was particularly insightful."I stand up, my hands resting on the edge of the table. I look at the students. I look at the window."My thesis is about the space between wrong," I start. My voice is clear, confident. "It’s about how we choose what to believe when the evidence is conflicting.""Excellent," Vass says."I argued that the brain will always choose the version of reality that ensures survival," I continue. "Even if that version is a lie."I stop. I look at the empty chair

I wake up to the sound of a heart monitor. *Beep. Beep. Beep.* It’s a steady, annoying sound that cuts through the fog in my brain. I keep my eyes closed, trying to remember where I am. A bank vault? A helicopter? A mountain? The memories are there, but they feel like they belong to someone else. Like I’m watching a movie through a sheet of frosted glass. I remember the fire. I remember the smell of gasoline. I remember a man with gray hair and gold glasses. But I can't remember his name.I snap my eyes open. The room is bright, filled with the soft glow of the morning sun. I see Theo in the bed next to mine. He’s awake, sitting up and picking at a tray of toast. He looks at me and smiles."Morning, sleepyhead.""Theo?" My voice is a croak."The one and only. You’ve been out for almost twenty hours, Nora. The doctor said you needed the rest."I sit up, my head throbbing. I look around the room. It’s the clinic. The Cedars. I remember coming here in the rain.I look at the floor next t

He’s slumped against the side of the cabin, his skin the color of old paper. He hasn't opened his eyes since Cole dragged us out of that stairwell. I reach out, my fingers trembling as I press them against his neck. His pulse is there, but it’s slow. Too slow."He’s not waking up, Cole.""He will," Cole says. He’s leaning over Jonah, watching the navigation screen. His face is a mask of soot and dried blood. He looks like he’s aged ten years in a single night. "The sedative they used was heavy. Jonah’s heading for

The alarm is the first thing that breaks the fog. It’s a low, pulsing sound that vibrates through the mattress. The white lights in the room flicker, turning a harsh, emergency red."System failure in Sub-Level 3. All personnel to containment."The efficient woman’s voice is gone, replaced by a frantic, mechanical drone. I open my eyes, the world still swaying, but the cold rush in my arm has stopped. The monitor next to my bed is dark, a single line of green text scrolling across the bottom: *External Override Detected.*Someone is here.I pull at the restraints again, and this time, the leather feels loose. The power surge must have released the electronic locks. I rip my hands free, the skin raw and bleeding, and scramble out of the bed. My legs are like jelly, and I hit the floor hard, the cold tile stinging my knees."Theo!" I hiss, crawling toward his bed. He’s still under, his eyes flickering beneath his lids. I start tearing the wires off his head, my fingers shaking. "Theo, w

The first thing I feel is the cold. It’s a deep, clinical cold that smells like ozone and rubbing alcohol. I try to open my eyes, but my eyelids feel like they’ve been glued shut. There is a steady, rhythmic humming in my ears, the sound of a machine breathing for someone who can't do it themselves."Heart rate is stabilizing. The transition is ninety percent complete."It’s not Vass. It’s a woman’s voice, sharp and efficient. I feel a sharp sting in my arm, a cold rush of liquid moving through my veins."Wait," I croak out.My eyes snap open. The ceiling is white, a flat, endless expanse of fluorescent lights that make my brain throb. I’m in a lab. A real one this time, not the dusty skeleton of my father’s basement. The walls are glass, and beyond them, I see the blue, jagged peaks of mountains I don't recognize.Switzerland.I try to sit up, but my wrists are held down by soft, leather restraints. I’m wearing a thin, paper-white gown. I look to my left and see Theo. He’s in a simil

"Don't hold your breath, Nora. It only makes the transition harder."Vass’s voice through the intercom is calm, almost fatherly, as if he is guiding me through a difficult lab experiment instead of gassing me in a bank vault. I scramble to my feet, the heavy brass key still clutched in my hand, but the world is already turning into a blurred mess of gray shadows. The sweet smell is everywhere now, cloying and thick, coating the back of my throat like sugar."Cole!" I shout, my voice coming out as a thin, pathetic wheeze.I reach out in the darkness, my fingers brushing against the rough fabric of his hoodie. He’s slumped against the safety deposit boxes, his breathing heavy and ragged. I slide down beside him, my head hitting the cold metal with a dull thud. The floor feels like it’s tilting, a ship lost in a storm I didn't see coming."Nora," he whispers, his hand fumbling for mine. His grip is weak, his skin clammy. "The vial... don't let him..."I look at the glass vial sitting on
