Lucian's pov

Something was wrong.

I felt it in my chest before I saw it. A cold spike of fear that had nothing to do with the curse and everything to do with her. Cressida had been in the dressing room for too long. The play was over and the applause had faded and the actors had dispersed but she had not come out.

Raven was talking to me and her voice was bright and her eyes were happy.

"She was amazing," she said. "Did you see her? She was absolutely brilliant."

"She was brilliant," I agreed.

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The Ritual

Lucian's pov The corridor was cold and the torches flickered and I could not stand still.I paced from one end of the hall to the other and my boots were loud on the stone and my hands were shaking and my chest was tight. The door to the infirmary was closed and the candles inside were bright and the voices were low. Madame Voss was in there with Cressida and she was performing the ritual and I was out here and I could not breathe.I pressed my hand to the door and the wood was cold and my fingers were shaking."Please," I whispered. "Please let her be okay."No one answered.I paced again and my wolf was restless and my curse was pulsing and my mind was racing. The ritual was dangerous. Voss had said it could kill her. But she was already dying. She was already slipping away and I could not let that happen.I thought about Cressida and her dark hair and her dark eyes and her smile that made my chest ache. I thought about the way she said my name and the way she held my hand and the

Lucian's pov The infirmary was chaos when I carried her through the doors.Madame Voss took one look at Cressida's pale face and her blue lips and her limp body and she was already moving. She cleared a bed and shouted orders and the healers scrambled. I laid Cressida on the mattress and her body was cold and her eyes were closed and her chest was barely moving."What happened?" Voss demanded."Fire. Smoke. She collapsed.""She was in a fire?""Sha set it. Sha locked her in the dressing room and set it on fire."Voss's face went pale but her hands were steady. "Get out.""No.""Alpha—""I said no." My voice was low and fierce and my wolf was close to the surface. "I am not leaving her."Voss stared at me and her eyes were sharp. "Then stand back and let me work."I stepped back and my hands were shaking and my chest was tight. The healers moved around her and their voices were low and their hands were quick. They checked her pulse and her breathing and her pupils and their faces were

But something was wrong. The feeling in my chest was growing stronger and my wolf was restless and my hands were shaking."Excuse me," I said.I walked away from them and my boots echoed on the stone and the torches flickered and the tapestries moved. The corridor was empty and the theater was quiet and the dressing room was at the

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The Real Fire

Cressida's pov The dressing room was chaos.Clothes were everywhere and makeup was scattered across the counter and the flowers Benita had given me were wilting in the corner. I was still wearing the white dress and my feet were still bare and my hair was still loose. The play was over and the applause had faded and the adrenaline was wearing off and I was exhausted.Raven was helping me unlace the back of the dress and her fingers were quick and her voice was bright."That was incredible," she said."That was terrifying.""You were amazing.""I was terrified.""Same thing."I laughed and the sound was tired but real. Benita was folding the costumes and Tasha was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed and her silver braids loose."You survived," Tasha said."I survived.""Barely.""Barely."The door opened and the other actors filed in and the room was crowded and loud. Voices overlapped and laughter echoed and the energy was bright.I stepped away from the crowd and walked t

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The Stage and It's Witch

Lucian's pov The theater was packed and the lights were dim and the air was thick with anticipation.I sat in the front row with my arms crossed and my eyes fixed on the stage. The velvet curtains were heavy and the wood was old and the scent of dust and polish filled the air. Wolves filled the seats and their voices were low and their movements were restless and their eyes were bright. The council members were in the private box above the stage and their faces were shadowed and their expressions were unreadable. Sha was in the middle of the crowd with her honey blonde hair perfect and her smile sharp and her eyes fixed on the stage. The play was about to begin.I had seen rehearsals and I had watched the scenes and I had heard the lines a hundred times. But tonight was different. Tonight was real. Tonight was the night that Cressida would stand on that stage and face the fire. The curtains parted and the stage was revealed. The set was simple. A wooden platform and a single chair an

  • The Alpha's Secret Witch    Does he know I'm a witch?

Cressida's pov The morning class was surprisingly peaceful.Master Theron was absent and a substitute had taken his place. She was young and kind and her voice was soft and her smile was warm. She did not drone on about the Great Purge or the betrayal of the wolves or the burning of the witches. She talked about poetry and the power of words and the way a single sentence could change everything. The room was warm and the light was soft and the tension that had been pressing on my chest for weeks eased just a little.I sat in my usual seat and Raven was beside me and Benita was in front of me and Tasha was in the back corner filing her nails and pretending to listen. The sunlight streamed through the high windows and the dust motes danced in the golden beams and the moment felt almost normal."Words are powerful," the substitute said. "They can heal and they can hurt. They can build bridges and they can burn them down. The way we use them matters."I thought about my own words. The on

Cressida's pov The kitchen was dark and the counters were cold and the air smelled like bread and sugar and something that made my stomach growl. We had been planning this for hours. • The Alpha's Secret Witch    The team was back together again.

Cressida's pov We were still at center ice when the door opened again.I heard it first. The creak of the old hinges and the shuffle of boots on stone. Then voices. Low and familiar and full of laughter."Look who finally decided to show up."Raven's voice cut through the cold and I turned and she
