Chapter 5

Penulis: Nine Nine
I flailed my arms, trying to stop the man, only to realize I was reliving a memory.

Everything around me was dark except for a sliver of light spilling from Mom and Dad's room. Like a moth drawn to a flame, I drifted toward it.

Mom sat on the bed, looking exhausted.

Dad finally asked, "Jenny still hasn't come out to eat?"

Mom didn't answer. She just rubbed her left shoulder.

Dad reached over and started massaging her shoulder. "Can she really go all day without eating? She's been through ten years of hell. I don't expect anything from her. All I want is for her to be safe and healthy for the rest of her life."

Mom let out a long sigh and turned to him. "Jenny's my daughter. Of course I worry about her. But it's always one episode after another. How much more are we supposed to take?

"Nancy even asked me today if we could go back to the way things used to be, when it was just the three of us."

Mom sniffled. "Randy, we owe Nancy so much. We adopted her after we'd given up hope of ever finding Jenny. Do you remember what we promised?"

Dad closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose.

Mom went on. "We promised we'd raise her as our own and never make her feel like she was any less our daughter."

Her voice cracked, and she started crying harder. "But do you know what Nancy told me today? She said she wasn't trying to compete with Jenny for our attention. She's just scared of losing us."

Dad pulled Mom into his arms. She buried her face in his shoulder and stayed quiet for a long moment.

When she finally spoke, her voice was muffled against his shoulder. "I don't care. Tomorrow, we're taking Nancy to the amusement park. Jenny can stay home."

Dad's hand stilled against her back. "Can we really leave Jenny home alone? Maybe we should have a therapist stay with her tomorrow."

Mom shoved him away and stared at him in disbelief. "Randy, are you crazy? We barely have any money left. Jenny even called yesterday asking when we were going to pay her back the 20,000 dollars."

My eyes burned.

Why hadn't I died sooner? I had put my family in debt. I was the one to blame.

In the light, Dad's sunken cheeks and Mom's swollen hands showed just how much they had suffered while searching for me. I had put them through so much.

At least I was dead now.

Dad sighed. "If I have to, I'll get a part-time job and work nights. We'll find a way. We can't let either of our daughters suffer."

Then he turned off the bedroom light.

The next morning, Mom was up before dawn making breakfast because she had promised to take Nancy to the amusement park.

She brought a bowl of oatmeal to my room. "Jenny, are you awake? Come eat something. I'm sorry about yesterday. I shouldn't have lost my temper with you."

When I still didn't answer, Mom's expression hardened, and she kicked the door open. The room was pitch-black.

She hurled the bowl at me and screamed, "You're nothing but a headache! What do you want from us? Who are you trying to punish by starving yourself? Your dad was even talking about hiring an in-home therapist for you last night.

"You're tearing this family apart! There hasn't been a moment of peace in this house since you came back!"

The more she yelled, the angrier she got. Finally, she lost her patience and started toward me to pull me up.

But as she stepped closer, she saw my lifeless face in the faint light, my eyes tightly shut. As she took another step, her foot hit the razor blade.

Mom looked down at it and seemed to realize what had happened. Her knees buckled, and she slumped to the floor.

Ms. Lane suddenly spoke up. "Come to think of it, Nancy was the one who told me. I ran into her at the grocery store, and she said Jenny, who'd been trafficked, came back."The crowd began murmuring."That's right. She told me too. She even told me how badly Jenny had been abused.""She told me Jenny had a bad temper too and asked us to be patient with her.""Enough!" Mom shrieked, cutting everyone off.She scooped Nancy into her arms and kissed her cheek. "I believe Nancy. She's such a sweet, well-behaved child. She would never do anything to upset me. Come on, we're going home."With Nancy in her arms, Mom started making her way through the crowd.Dad called after them, his voice hoarse. "Wait! Nancy, you're a good girl, aren't you?"At last, Dad was talking to her. Nancy lifted her head from Mom's shoulder and looked at him eagerly. "Yes. I'm a very good girl."Dad gripped the hem of his shirt. "Good girls don't lie. So tell me, Nancy. Were you the one who left the razor bl

"Dad, you work so hard. I don't want to take dance lessons anymore. That way, you won't have to work so much overtime."Dad, your shoulder's hurting again. Here, take the money I saved from my allowance and go see a doctor."Dad, I don't need tutoring anymore. It costs too much. I can study on my own."Dad, I…"One memory after another came rushing back to Dad, all the times I had tried to make things easier for him growing up.A broken sound escaped him, somewhere between a laugh and a sob. Just hearing it made my chest ache."I was wrong. I shouldn't have yelled at you. I never should've said those awful things."He grabbed fistfuls of his hair and pulled hard. "You were never a burden. You're my daughter. You mean everything to me!"Overcome with grief, he started slamming his head against the wall again and again. Soon, there were small streaks of blood on the wall.I hovered beside him in a panic, reaching out to stop him. "I don't blame you, Dad! I don't blame you!"I s

"Jenny…"Mom whispered my name, but I couldn't answer. All I could do was watch her call my name again, pleading with me."Jenny…"I pressed myself against the cold wall as Mom began frantically scrubbing the dried blood from the floor."There's so much blood. It must have hurt so much. Don't be scared, Jenny. I'm right here."She tried to lift me, but my body kept slipping out of her grasp. In the end, all she could do was wrap her arms around me and gently brush the loose strands of hair from my face."Why are you crying, Mom? I'm dead now. Nancy is your only daughter, just like you wanted. So why are you crying?"Dad heard the commotion and rushed to the doorway. The moment he saw me, he started shaking. He pulled out his phone to call 911, but his hands were trembling so badly he couldn't even unlock it.Just then, Nancy came out of her room clutching her stuffed tiger. "Mom, Dad, what happened to Jenny?"Neither of them paid her any attention. They pushed her aside withou

My stuffed tiger was worn and faded, with frayed fur and one eye missing. It looked nothing like the one Nancy carried around. In the bathroom, Nancy was playing with the bubbles in the tub."Mom, you and Dad have raised me since I was little, right?" she asked."We raised both of you—"Nancy cut her off. "No, you didn't! Jenny didn't come back until later. I'm your real daughter!"She slapped at the water, splashing it everywhere and spraying Mom right in the face. The moment she noticed the corners of Mom's mouth turn down, she got up and wrapped her arms around Mom's neck."I'm sorry, Mom. I was wrong. I'm just scared I'm going to lose you and Dad. Can things go back to the way they were? Just you, Dad, and me?"She reached up and touched Mom's cheek.Mom sat her back down in the tub and rinsed the bubbles off her."Okay, okay. I understand. Your dad and I have been so focused on Jenny lately that we haven't given you enough attention. Why don't the three of us go to the am

I passed straight through the wall.Dad closed the front door behind them while Mom led Nancy inside with burgers and fried chicken, both of which were favorites of mine too. Then Mom saw that the living room was still a complete mess. Her expression hardened, and she turned to Dad."Jenny's getting harder and harder to deal with. We miss one phone call, and now she can't even be bothered to clean up the house. Her temper just keeps getting worse."Depression, somatization, whatever. I think she's faking all of it! Randy, we can't keep coddling her like this. Tomorrow, we're making her go out and get a job!"Mom was still complaining when Nancy let go of her hand and ran to my room. She pressed up against the door and called softly, "Jenny, please don't be upset. I brought you a big burger!"When I didn't answer, Nancy turned around, looking hurt, tears clinging to her lashes. "Mom, why won't Jenny talk to me? Is she mad because you and Dad took me to the hospital? I'm sorry, Je
