LOGINTen years after I'm abducted, I'm finally rescued and brought home. From that day on, Mom and Dad make me the center of their world. They even burn through their savings and move to another city for me. But those ten years leave me with severe depression. One day, I take a razor blade to my wrist. Dad grabs the blade with his bare hand. "If you die, what are your mom and I supposed to do?" All that attention soon starts to suffocate me. Eventually, I snap and smash up all the furniture in the house. Even then, Mom just pulls me into her arms and comforts me over and over. "It's okay, sweetheart. It's all over now." Then my younger adopted sister, Nancy Bonner, asks one simple question. "Is Jenny ever going back to where she lived before?" That's all it takes. Dad drags her out of her chair and starts beating her. However, that day Nancy comes down with a fever and has to go to the hospital, all I do is say I'm afraid of the dark. Mom whips around and stares at me in disbelief. "How can you be so selfish? I wish I'd never had you." Dad shoves me toward the door. "You're afraid of the dark? It's not even dark outside. Why didn't you just die out there? We already give you all our attention, and somehow it's still not enough. You're heartless. You're no daughter of mine!" Mom holds Nancy tight and hurries out the door with Dad. Just before they leave, Nancy looks back at me and mouths, "Mom's mine." Then they leave me alone in the dark. I pick up the razor blade from the floor and use every ounce of strength I have to crawl to my bedroom.
View MoreMs. Lane suddenly spoke up. "Come to think of it, Nancy was the one who told me. I ran into her at the grocery store, and she said Jenny, who'd been trafficked, came back."The crowd began murmuring."That's right. She told me too. She even told me how badly Jenny had been abused.""She told me Jenny had a bad temper too and asked us to be patient with her.""Enough!" Mom shrieked, cutting everyone off.She scooped Nancy into her arms and kissed her cheek. "I believe Nancy. She's such a sweet, well-behaved child. She would never do anything to upset me. Come on, we're going home."With Nancy in her arms, Mom started making her way through the crowd.Dad called after them, his voice hoarse. "Wait! Nancy, you're a good girl, aren't you?"At last, Dad was talking to her. Nancy lifted her head from Mom's shoulder and looked at him eagerly. "Yes. I'm a very good girl."Dad gripped the hem of his shirt. "Good girls don't lie. So tell me, Nancy. Were you the one who left the razor bl
"Dad, you work so hard. I don't want to take dance lessons anymore. That way, you won't have to work so much overtime."Dad, your shoulder's hurting again. Here, take the money I saved from my allowance and go see a doctor."Dad, I don't need tutoring anymore. It costs too much. I can study on my own."Dad, I…"One memory after another came rushing back to Dad, all the times I had tried to make things easier for him growing up.A broken sound escaped him, somewhere between a laugh and a sob. Just hearing it made my chest ache."I was wrong. I shouldn't have yelled at you. I never should've said those awful things."He grabbed fistfuls of his hair and pulled hard. "You were never a burden. You're my daughter. You mean everything to me!"Overcome with grief, he started slamming his head against the wall again and again. Soon, there were small streaks of blood on the wall.I hovered beside him in a panic, reaching out to stop him. "I don't blame you, Dad! I don't blame you!"I s
"Jenny…"Mom whispered my name, but I couldn't answer. All I could do was watch her call my name again, pleading with me."Jenny…"I pressed myself against the cold wall as Mom began frantically scrubbing the dried blood from the floor."There's so much blood. It must have hurt so much. Don't be scared, Jenny. I'm right here."She tried to lift me, but my body kept slipping out of her grasp. In the end, all she could do was wrap her arms around me and gently brush the loose strands of hair from my face."Why are you crying, Mom? I'm dead now. Nancy is your only daughter, just like you wanted. So why are you crying?"Dad heard the commotion and rushed to the doorway. The moment he saw me, he started shaking. He pulled out his phone to call 911, but his hands were trembling so badly he couldn't even unlock it.Just then, Nancy came out of her room clutching her stuffed tiger. "Mom, Dad, what happened to Jenny?"Neither of them paid her any attention. They pushed her aside withou
I flailed my arms, trying to stop the man, only to realize I was reliving a memory.Everything around me was dark except for a sliver of light spilling from Mom and Dad's room. Like a moth drawn to a flame, I drifted toward it.Mom sat on the bed, looking exhausted.Dad finally asked, "Jenny still hasn't come out to eat?"Mom didn't answer. She just rubbed her left shoulder.Dad reached over and started massaging her shoulder. "Can she really go all day without eating? She's been through ten years of hell. I don't expect anything from her. All I want is for her to be safe and healthy for the rest of her life."Mom let out a long sigh and turned to him. "Jenny's my daughter. Of course I worry about her. But it's always one episode after another. How much more are we supposed to take?"Nancy even asked me today if we could go back to the way things used to be, when it was just the three of us."Mom sniffled. "Randy, we owe Nancy so much. We adopted her after we'd given up hope of
