Chapter 30: Escape and Vengeance

The cabin burned behind them.

Lena watched the flames consume the building where Lilith had sprung her trap, her emotions a tangled mess of frustration and relief. They'd survived—again. But Lilith had escaped—again.

"How does she keep doing this?" Lena's voice was quiet, tired. "Every time we face her, she slips away."

Kael stood beside her, his arm wrapped around her waist. "Because she's a coward. She fights to run, not to win."

"Then how do we stop a coward who's also immortal?"

Caspian emerged from the shadows, his red eyes thoughtful. "We find what she values. What she can't bear to lose. And we take it from her."

Lena looked at him. "She values power. Control. Revenge."

"Exactly." Caspian nodded slowly. "So we take away her power. We destroy her control. We make revenge impossible." He met her eyes. "We build something she can never have."

"What?"

"A family. A home. A *reason* to fight for something other than hate." Kael's voice was soft. "We've already started. We just need to finish."

Lena thought about that. About the pack, the vampires who'd joined them, the fragile alliance they'd built. About Kael and Caspian, her wolf and her vampire, her *family*.

"Then that's what we'll do," she said. "We'll build something so strong, so beautiful, so *loved* that Lilith can never touch it."

Kael pulled her closer. "Together."

Caspian's hand found hers. "Together."

---

The journey back to camp took hours.

They moved slowly, carefully, watching for any sign of another attack. But the forest remained quiet—too quiet. Lena's senses stretched to their limits, but she felt nothing. No threat. No danger. Just... emptiness.

"She's gone," Caspian said finally. "For now."

"For now." Lena hated those words. "How long until 'for now' becomes 'forever'?"

"I don't know." Kael's voice was honest. "But we'll be ready when it does."

They reached camp as the sun began to set.

---

The welcome they received was overwhelming.

Word had spread of their confrontation with Lilith, of their survival against impossible odds. Wolves and vampires alike crowded around them, touching them, thanking them, *celebrating* them.

Lena felt overwhelmed by the attention. "We just did what we had to do."

"No." An elder wolf stepped forward—a woman with silver fur and ancient eyes. "You did what no one else could. You faced the darkness and survived. You brought hope back to us."

Lena didn't know what to say.

Kael spoke for her. "Lena is our hope. All of ours. She's proved that again and again." He looked at her, his golden eyes soft. "And we're going to keep proving it. Together."

The crowd cheered.

---

That night, they celebrated.

Not with the wild abandon of before—there was too much still unresolved for that. But with quiet joy, with shared meals and gentle laughter, with the simple pleasure of being alive.

Lena sat between her men, watching the fire dance.

"We should talk about the future," she said quietly. "About what comes next."

Kael nodded. "The pack needs to know what we're building. Why we're fighting."

"Agreed." Caspian's voice was thoughtful. "And the vampires need to understand that this alliance isn't temporary. It's *forever*."

Lena looked at them. "Is it? Forever?"

Kael took her hand. "For as long as you'll have us."

Caspian's cool fingers intertwined with hers. "Longer, if you'll let us."

She laughed—a soft, surprised sound. "You two are impossible."

"And you love it." Kael grinned.

"And I love it." She leaned into them. "I love *you*. Both of you."

They sat like that for a long time, watching the fire, feeling the warmth, *being* together.

---

Later, after the celebrations wound down and the camp settled into sleep, Lena found herself alone with her thoughts.

She walked to the edge of camp, staring out at the dark forest. Somewhere out there, Lilith was plotting. Somewhere out there, the next attack was being planned. Somewhere out there, danger waited.

But here—here she had Kael. Here she had Caspian. Here she had a family, a home, a *reason*.

"Can't sleep?"

Caspian's voice came from behind her. She didn't turn.

"Too much on my mind."

He moved to stand beside her. "Talk to me."

"About what?"

"About whatever's keeping you awake."

Lena was quiet for a moment. Then: "I keep thinking about Lilith. About how she escaped. About how she'll keep coming, again and again, until one of us is dead."

"That's the nature of enemies like her." Caspian's voice was calm. "They don't stop. They can't stop. Their hatred consumes them."

"And us? What consumes us?"

"Love." He turned to face her. "Love consumes us, Lena. In the best possible way. It drives us to protect, to fight, to *live*. It's not a weakness—it's the greatest strength there is."

She looked at him—this ancient vampire who'd spent three centuries alone, who'd found love against all odds, who'd chosen family over everything.

"How did you get so wise?"

"Three hundred years of solitude. Gives you time to think." He almost smiled. "Also, I had a good teacher."

"Me?"

"You. Kael. This crazy family we've built." He touched her face gently. "You've taught me more in months than I learned in centuries."

Lena leaned into his touch. "I love you."

"I know." He kissed her softly. "I love you too."

---

Kael found them like that—wrapped in each other, watching the stars.

"Room for one more?" he asked quietly.

"Always." Lena held out her hand.

He joined them, his warmth a perfect counterpoint to Caspian's cool. The three of them stood together, facing the darkness, facing the future, facing *everything*.

"We're going to make it," Kael said. "All of us. Together."

"How do you know?" Lena asked.

"Because we have something Lilith doesn't." He looked at her, at Caspian, at the family they'd built. "We have each other."

Lena felt tears prick her eyes. "That's enough?"

"That's everything."

---

The next morning, they held a council.

Wolves and vampires gathered together—not as enemies, not even as uneasy allies, but as *family*. Lena stood at the center, Kael on one side, Caspian on the other.

"Lilith is still out there," she began. "She's still plotting, still planning, still waiting for her chance to destroy us."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd.

"But we're not going to wait for her. We're not going to react to her attacks." Lena's voice strengthened. "We're going to build something so strong, so united, so *loved* that she can never touch it."

"How?" someone called out.

"By trusting each other. By fighting for each other. By *loving* each other." Lena looked at the faces before her—wolves and vampires who'd once been enemies, now standing together. "We've already started. Now we finish."

Kael stepped forward. "The pack stands with Lena. With all of you."

Caspian nodded. "The vampires who've joined us stand with her too."

Lena smiled. "Then let's get to work."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 135: The Stranger

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 133: The Priestess's Burden

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
