Chapter 31: The Message

last update Tanggal publikasi: 2026-05-05 20:19:34

Three weeks passed after Lilith's latest escape.

Three weeks of relative peace, of rebuilding, of *hope*. The alliance between wolves and vampires grew stronger each day. More vampires arrived from distant territories, drawn by stories of a place where ancient hatreds had been set aside. More wolves accepted them, learning to see beyond centuries of enmity.

Lena threw herself into the work.

She mediated disputes between wolves and vampires who still struggled to trust each other. She trained with Kael to master her wolf instincts, with Caspian to control her vampire side. She practiced with her light, learning to extend it further, to make it brighter, to *share* it with those who needed hope.

But through it all, a part of her waited.

Lilith was out there. Lilith would return. It was only a matter of time.

---

The message arrived on a quiet Tuesday afternoon.

A young wolf brought it—a scrap of paper, torn and dirty, clutched in trembling hands. He'd found it tied to an arrow, buried in a tree at the edge of the territory.

"It's for you," he said, handing it to Lena. "Addressed by name."

Lena unfolded the paper with shaking hands.

*Dear cousin,*

*You think you've won. You think building your little alliance will protect you. But you've forgotten something important.*

*You're not the only hybrid in the world.*

*There are others. Scattered. Hidden. Alone. I've been finding them. Collecting them. And they're going to help me destroy everything you've built.*

*Come find me if you dare. But hurry—I'm running out of patience. And when I do, they'll be the first to pay for your sins.*

*See you soon,*

*Lilith*

P.S. *Say hello to your wolf and your vampire for me. I have plans for them too.*

---

Lena's blood ran cold.

"She's lying," Kael said immediately, reading over her shoulder. "Trying to scare you."

"Is she?" Lena's voice was quiet. "She knew about the hybrids. About me. About everything. What if she's telling the truth?"

Caspian took the note, reading it carefully. "If Lilith has found other hybrids—if she's using them—that changes everything."

"Then we find them first." Kael's golden eyes blazed. "We find them and bring them here before she can turn them."

"How?" Lena asked. "We don't know where they are. We don't even know if they're real."

The three of them stared at the note, the weight of its words pressing down on them.

Then Caspian spoke. "There might be a way."

---

The vampire archives were deep beneath the city of Nocturne.

Caspian led them through tunnels that hadn't been used in centuries, past doors sealed with magic older than human civilization. The archives themselves were vast—room after room filled with scrolls and books and artifacts from ten thousand years of vampire history.

"What are we looking for?" Lena asked.

"Records of hybrids. Mentions of others like you." Caspian moved through the stacks with purpose. "Vampires have been documenting supernatural activity since the beginning. If there are other hybrids, there will be evidence."

They searched for hours. Days. The archives were overwhelming—so much information, so much history, so much *pain* encoded in ancient words.

Finally, Lena found something.

A scroll, yellowed with age, written in a language Caspian had to translate. It spoke of a hybrid who'd lived three thousand years ago—a woman named Therasia who'd been hunted by both wolves and vampires. She'd disappeared into the mountains, never to be seen again.

But the scroll mentioned something else. A symbol. A mark that Therasia had left behind, a way for other hybrids to find her if they needed sanctuary.

Lena stared at the symbol, her heart pounding.

"It's a map," she breathed. "Not of places—of *energy*. Of hybrid blood. If we can find this symbol in the world, it will lead us to others."

Kael's eyes widened. "You can sense that?"

"I don't know." Lena closed her eyes, reaching inside herself. The light flickered—then stretched, reaching outward, searching for something that felt like *her*.

And there—faint but unmistakable—she felt *something*. A pulse. A heartbeat. Another hybrid.

"I found one," she whispered. "There's another hybrid out there."

---

The journey took five days.

Lena followed the pulse—a constant thrum in the back of her mind, guiding her east, toward mountains she'd never seen. Kael and Caspian flanked her, their presence a comfort against the unknown.

"What if they don't want to be found?" Kael asked on the third night. They sat around a small fire, the darkness pressing close.

"Then we respect that." Lena's voice was quiet. "But we have to try. If Lilith finds them first—"

"She won't." Caspian's voice was firm. "We'll find them. We'll bring them home."

Lena looked at him. "You sound so sure."

"I am sure." He met her eyes. "I've seen what you can do, Lena. I've watched you transform enemies into allies, hatred into love. If anyone can reach these hybrids, it's you."

She wanted to believe him. Wanted to share his certainty. But the weight of the mission pressed down on her—the knowledge that lives depended on her success.

"I hope you're right," she whispered.

"I'm always right." He almost smiled. "Ask anyone."

Kael snorted. "Three hundred years of solitude made him arrogant."

"Three hundred years of solitude made me *wise*. There's a difference."

Lena laughed—a real laugh, bright and unexpected. "You two are impossible."

"And you love it." Kael grinned.

"And I love it," she agreed. "I love *you*. Both of you."

They sat together under the stars, three souls bound by love, facing an uncertain future.

---

On the fifth day, they found her.

The hybrid lived in a cave high in the mountains, hidden from the world by choice and necessity. She was young—maybe twenty—with wild eyes and unkempt hair and a fear so deep it had become part of her.

"Stay back." Her voice shook. "I don't know you. I don't trust you."

"I'm Lena." Lena stopped moving, showing empty hands. "I'm a hybrid too. Like you."

The girl's eyes widened. "Liar. There are no others. I've been alone my whole life."

"You're not alone anymore." Lena moved closer, slowly, carefully. "There are more of us. A whole community. Wolves and vampires who've learned to live together. Hybrids who've found a home."

"Home." The girl's voice cracked. "I don't know what that means."

"Then let me show you." Lena held out her hand. "Please. Let me help you."

The girl stared at her hand for a long moment. Then, slowly, she reached out and took it.

Her name was Mira.

---

The journey back took longer.

Mira was fragile—emotionally, physically, spiritually. Years of isolation had taken their toll. She barely spoke, barely ate, barely *trusted*. But she stayed close to Lena, drawn by the connection between them, by the promise of something she'd never had.

"She's like you were," Kael observed quietly one night. "At the beginning. Alone. Scared. Hoping."

"I was." Lena watched Mira sleep, curled in a tight ball near the fire. "I never want anyone to feel that way again."

"You can't save everyone, Lena."

"I can try." She met his eyes. "That's all I can do. Try."

Kael pulled her close. "That's enough. That's always been enough."

---

They reached home to find chaos.

Wolves and vampires were gathered at the edge of camp, their voices raised in anger and fear. At the center, a young wolf lay bleeding—wounded, dying.

"What happened?" Lena demanded.

"Attack." The wolf gasped. "They came out of nowhere. Took some of our people. Left this." He pressed a bloody note into her hand.

Lena unfolded it with shaking fingers.

*Dear cousin,*

*You found one. Congratulations. But I found three more. And they're mine now.*

*If you want them back, come to the old ruins at midnight. Alone. You know the price of refusal.*

*Tick tock, cousin.*

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
