Chapter 33: The First Hybrid

The ruins seemed to hold their breath.

Lena stood frozen, her eyes fixed on the three hybrids before her. They were young—younger than Mira, even. The smallest couldn't have been more than fifteen. Their eyes were empty, their faces blank, their bodies still as statues.

"What did you do to them?" Lena's voice shook with barely controlled fury.

"Nothing they didn't already have done." Lilith circled the hybrids like a proud collector displaying prizes. "Fear. Isolation. Despair. They were already broken when I found them. I just... shaped the pieces."

"You monster."

"Monster?" Lilith laughed. "I'm the only one who showed them kindness. The only one who gave them purpose. They *love* me, cousin."

Lena looked at the hybrids again—really looked. And beneath the emptiness, she saw it. Fear. Confusion. And something else. A flicker of recognition when they looked at her.

They knew what she was. They knew she was like them.

And they were terrified.

---

"I'm not here to fight you," Lena said carefully, keeping her voice calm. "I'm here to help them. To help all of us."

"Help?" Lilith's eyes flashed. "You abandoned them. You built your little paradise and forgot that others like you existed. I found them. I saved them. They're *mine*."

"They're not property, Lilith. They're people."

"People who've never known love. Never known safety. Never known anything except running and hiding." Lilith's voice hardened. "I gave them purpose. I gave them a family. What have you given them?"

Lena's heart ached. Because Lilith wasn't entirely wrong. She had been so focused on survival, on building something with Kael and Caspian, that she hadn't thought about others like her. Others who were suffering alone.

"I'm here now," she said quietly. "That has to count for something."

The smallest hybrid—the girl—looked up. For just a moment, something flickered in her empty eyes.

Hope.

Then Lilith moved.

---

The attack was sudden and brutal.

Lilith's hand shot out, dark energy crackling around her fingers. The three hybrids stumbled back, their faces contorting with pain.

"You want them?" Lilith snarled. "Come get them."

Lena didn't hesitate. Her light exploded outward, pushing back the darkness, creating a shield between Lilith and the hybrids. But Lilith was ready—she dodged, circled, struck from another angle.

"You can't protect them forever," Lilith hissed. "You can't protect anyone."

"I can try." Lena's voice was steel. "That's what love does. It tries."

The hybrids watched the battle with wide eyes—two forces of nature clashing over their fate. The girl took a step forward. Then another.

"Don't," Lena gasped, still fighting Lilith. "Stay back."

But the girl kept moving.

---

She walked straight into the light.

Lilith screamed. "NO! You can't—you're MINE—"

But the girl was already bathed in Lena's glow, her empty eyes filling with tears, with recognition, with *hope*.

"You're like me," she whispered. "You're really like me."

"I am." Lena reached for her, never taking her eyes off Lilith. "And I'm not leaving you here."

The other two hybrids moved then—slowly at first, then faster. They stumbled toward the light, toward Lena, toward *safety*. Lilith howled with rage, throwing everything she had at them, but Lena's shield held.

"I'll kill you," Lilith screamed. "I'll kill all of you!"

"No." A new voice cut through the chaos. "You won't."

Kael stepped out of the shadows, his massive wolf form blocking Lilith's path. Behind him, Caspian moved like smoke, his ancient power crackling in the air.

"You," Lilith spat. "Her protectors. Always in the way."

"Always." Kael shifted to human form, his golden eyes blazing. "And we always will be."

Caspian moved to Lena's side, helping her steady the hybrids. "Are you okay?"

"I am now." Lena's voice shook with relief. "How did you—"

"We couldn't stay back." Caspian's red eyes softened. "Not when we felt your fear through the bond."

Lilith watched them, her face a mask of hatred. Then, slowly, she smiled.

"This isn't over, cousin. It will never be over." She raised her hand, and darkness swirled around her. "I'll be back. And when I return, I'll bring an army."

She vanished.

---

The silence that followed was deafening.

Lena collapsed to her knees, the light fading from her skin. The three hybrids huddled together, trembling, crying, *alive*.

Kael was at her side instantly. "Lena. Lena, look at me."

"I'm okay." She gasped for breath. "Just... tired. So tired."

Caspian knelt beside them, his cool hands checking her for injuries. "No wounds. Just exhaustion. She pushed herself too hard."

"Story of my life." Lena managed a weak smile. "The hybrids—are they—"

"Shaken. Scared. But alive." Kael looked at them, his golden eyes soft. "Thanks to you."

The smallest girl crept closer, her eyes fixed on Lena. "You saved us."

"We saved you." Lena reached for her hand. "What's your name?"

"Rina." The girl's voice was barely a whisper. "I'm Rina."

"I'm Lena. And these are my... family." She gestured at Kael and Caspian. "We're going to take you somewhere safe. Somewhere you'll never have to be alone again."

Rina's eyes filled with tears. "Is there really such a place?"

"There is." Lena squeezed her hand. "We built it. For all of us."

---

The journey back took four days.

Four days of slow travel, of careful healing, of *trust* slowly building. The three hybrids—Rina, fifteen; her brother Dorn, seventeen; and an older girl named Sera, twenty-two—were fragile as glass. Every sound made them flinch. Every shadow made them cower. Every kind word made them cry.

"They've been through so much," Mira whispered to Lena. They walked together at the back of the group, watching the others. "I thought I had it bad. But them—" She shook her head. "Lilith did unspeakable things."

"She'll pay for it." Lena's voice was quiet but certain. "Someday, she'll pay."

"And until then?"

"Until then, we heal. We love. We build something she can never touch."

Mira looked at her—this strange, brave woman who'd become her anchor. "You really believe that, don't you? That love can fix anything."

"I believe love can fix *everything*." Lena smiled. "It fixed me."

---

That night, they camped in a small valley.

Kael hunted and brought back fresh meat. Caspian found safe water and edible plants. Lena tended the hybrids, talking to them softly, answering their endless questions about the world they'd never seen.

"What's it like?" Rina asked. "Your home?"

"It's... chaos." Lena laughed. "Wolves and vampires living together. Hybrids like us finding family. Children running everywhere. Love, everywhere you look."

Rina's eyes widened. "Wolves and vampires together? I thought they hated each other."

"They did. For centuries." Lena's voice softened. "But then some people decided hate was too heavy to carry. Decided love was worth the risk."

"Like you?"

"Like all of us." Lena gestured at Kael and Caspian, sitting by the fire. "Those two taught me that love doesn't have to choose. That family can look however we want it to."

Rina stared at the two men—so different, yet so united. "They love you? Both of them?"

"More than I ever thought possible." Lena's eyes glistened. "And I love them. Equally. Completely. Forever."

Rina was quiet for a long moment. Then: "I want that someday. Someone to love me like that."

"You'll have it." Lena hugged her gently. "I promise."

---

They reached home on the fourth day.

Mira ran ahead, eager to show the newcomers everything—the cabins, the training grounds, the gardens where children played. Rina, Dorn, and Sera followed slowly, their eyes wide with wonder.

"This is real?" Sera whispered. "This is really real?"

"It's really real." Lena put an arm around her. "And it's yours now. All of it."

The other hybrids gathered—the ones they'd already found, the ones who'd been waiting for more of their kind. They welcomed the newcomers with open arms, with tears, with *love*.

Lena watched from a distance, her heart full.

"You did it again." Kael appeared beside her. "Saved more lost souls."

"We did it." She leaned into him. "All of us."

Caspian joined them, his cool presence a comfort. "Three more hybrids. Three more chances for Lilith to target."

"We'll protect them." Kael's voice was firm. "Like we protect everyone."

Lena looked at them—her wolf, her vampire, her *family*. "Together?"

"Together." They spoke as one.

---

That night, they celebrated.

The new hybrids were welcomed with food and music and laughter. They cried—all of them—at the sheer overwhelming *kindness* of it all. Rina clung to Lena like a shadow, afraid to let her out of sight.

"I won't leave you," Lena promised. "None of us will."

Rina nodded, still trembling. "I know. I'm just... not used to this."

"To what?"

"To being safe." Her voice cracked. "To being loved."

Lena pulled her close. "You'll get used to it. I promise. And until you do, we'll be here. Every step of the way."

Rina cried against her shoulder—healing tears, finally.

---

Later, after the celebrations wound down and the new hybrids were settled, Lena found herself alone with her men.

"Three more," she murmured. "How many are out there, do you think? How many more like us, suffering alone?"

"I don't know." Kael's voice was honest. "But we'll find them. All of them. However long it takes."

Caspian nodded. "This is our purpose now. Building a home for every lost hybrid."

Lena looked at them—these two impossible men who'd become her everything. "I love you. Both of you. More than words can say."

"We know." Kael kissed her forehead. "We love you too."

Caspian's lips brushed hers. "Forever."

They held each other under the stars, three souls bound by love, ready for whatever came next.

---

A scream tore through the night.

Lena was on her feet instantly, running toward the sound. Kael and Caspian followed close behind.

They found Rina in the new hybrids' cabin, trembling, pointing at the window.

"She was there," the girl gasped. "Lilith. She was watching. She smiled at me and then—" Rina burst into tears. "She's not done with us. She's never going to be done."

Lena pulled her close, her heart pounding. Outside, the darkness pressed close—waiting, watching, *hungry*.

"Get everyone inside," she ordered. "Double the guards. No one goes anywhere alone."

Kael nodded and moved to organize the defense. Caspian stayed close, his red eyes scanning the darkness.

"She's playing with us," he murmured. "Drawing out the fear."

"I know." Lena's voice was quiet. "And it's working."

Rina's sobs echoed in the night—a reminder that the war was far from over.

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
