Chapter 34: The Others

Three days had passed since Lilith's midnight visit.

Three days of heightened security, of restless nights, of jumping at every shadow. The camp had transformed into a fortress—guards posted at every entrance, patrols circling constantly, warning systems activated. No one slept well. No one felt safe.

But through it all, the new hybrids began to heal.

Rina stayed close to Lena, following her everywhere like a small, frightened shadow. Her brother Dorn was quieter, more withdrawn, but Lena caught him watching the other hybrids with longing in his eyes. And Sera—the oldest of the three—had thrown herself into helping with camp duties, as if staying busy could keep the nightmares at bay.

"They're doing well," Mira observed. She'd taken on the role of big sister to the newcomers, showing them around, answering their questions, *being there* in ways no one had been for her. "Considering."

"Considering everything they've been through." Lena nodded. "You're good with them."

Mira shrugged, embarrassed. "I remember what it felt like. Being alone. Being scared. Not knowing if anyone would ever come." She looked at the newcomers. "I don't want them to feel that way ever again."

"You won't let them." Lena squeezed her shoulder. "None of us will."

---

That afternoon, a scout returned with news.

"There's a settlement about two days east," he reported to the council. "Small. Hidden. But we've detected hybrid energy there. At least four signatures."

Lena's heart leaped. "Four more?"

"Possibly. The signatures are faint—they might be shielded. Or they might be..." He hesitated.

"Might be what?"

"Dying." The scout's voice was quiet. "The energy is weak. Unstable. If they're there and they're in trouble, we don't have much time."

Kael was on his feet instantly. "Then we leave at dawn. I'll lead the rescue team myself."

"Not just you." Lena stood beside him. "I'm coming. If they're hybrids, they need to see one of their own."

Caspian nodded. "I'll come too. Three of us can move faster than an army."

The council murmured agreement. Plans were made, supplies gathered, goodbyes whispered.

By nightfall, they were ready.

---

The journey east was hard.

The terrain grew rougher with every mile—rocky hills, dense forests, rivers that had to be crossed in freezing water. Lena pushed herself harder than ever, driven by the knowledge that four hybrids were out there, possibly dying.

"You're running on empty." Kael caught her arm as she stumbled. "Rest."

"I can't rest. Not while they're—"

"You can't help them if you collapse." His golden eyes were gentle but firm. "An hour. Just an hour. Then we move again."

Lena wanted to argue, but her body betrayed her. She slumped against a tree, suddenly exhausted.

Caspian appeared beside her with water. "He's right. We need you strong."

She drank, hating every second of delay but knowing they were right. "An hour. No more."

"An hour." Kael settled beside her, his warmth a comfort. "Then we find them."

---

They found the settlement at dusk the next day.

It was smaller than the scout had described—just a handful of crude shelters hidden in a valley. No fires. No voices. No signs of life.

"They're here," Lena whispered, her hybrid senses reaching out. "But they're... scared. Hiding."

"Can you get them to come out?" Caspian asked.

Lena closed her eyes, reaching inside herself. The light flickered—then stretched outward, warm and gentle, a beacon in the darkness.

*We're here to help,* she thought, sending the message through the hybrid connection. *You're not alone anymore.*

Silence.

Then, slowly, figures began to emerge from the shelters.

Four hybrids—two men, two women, all young, all terrified. Their eyes were hollow, their bodies thin, their movements hesitant. They looked at Lena like she was a ghost.

"You're real," one of the women whispered. "You're really real."

"I'm real." Lena moved toward her slowly, hands raised. "I'm Lena. I'm a hybrid, like you. And I've come to take you home."

"Home." The woman's voice cracked. "There's no such thing."

"There is." Mira stepped forward, the other rescued hybrids behind her. "We thought the same thing. But we were wrong. There's a place—a real place—where we're safe. Where we're loved. Where we *belong*."

The newcomers stared at them—at their healthy bodies, their bright eyes, their *hope*. And slowly, hesitantly, they began to believe.

---

The journey back took five days.

Five days of slow travel, of careful healing, of *trust* painstakingly built. The new hybrids—Lyra, 24; Corin, 26; Velvet, 19; and Ash, 21—were even more damaged than the first group. Lilith had found them earlier, broken them more thoroughly.

"She kept us in darkness," Lyra whispered one night, huddled by the fire. "For months. She said we were hers. That no one would ever want us."

"She lied." Lena's voice was firm. "She lies about everything. You're wanted. You're loved. You're *family*."

Lyra's eyes filled with tears. "I don't know how to be family."

"None of us did, at first." Lena put an arm around her. "But we learn. Together. That's what family does."

---

They reached home to find the camp transformed.

Word of the rescue mission had spread, and everyone had pitched in to prepare. New cabins stood ready. Warm clothing and soft blankets waited. Food was prepared, fires were lit, *love* was waiting.

The newcomers wept at the welcome.

"This is for us?" Velvet whispered, touching a soft blanket like it might disappear. "Really for us?"

"Really for you." Lena hugged her gently. "All of it. Forever."

That night, they celebrated again.

The original hybrids welcomed the newcomers with open arms. Stories were shared, tears were shed, bonds were formed. And through it all, Lena watched with a full heart.

"How many does that make now?" Kael asked, appearing beside her.

"Counting Mira and the first three? Eleven." Lena's voice was soft with wonder. "Eleven hybrids, Kael. All safe. All home."

"Because of you."

"Because of all of us." She leaned into him. "Because of love."

Caspian joined them, his cool presence completing the circle. "Lilith will be furious. Eleven hybrids she can't use."

"Good." Lena's voice hardened. "Let her be furious. Let her come. We'll be ready."

---

The next morning, a messenger arrived.

He was young—barely more than a boy—and he looked terrified. But he held his ground, delivering his message with trembling voice.

"From Lilith," he said, holding out a scroll. "She said to give this to the hybrid leader. She said—" He swallowed hard. "She said to tell you the game is just beginning."

Lena took the scroll with steady hands.

*Dear cousin,*

*Eleven hybrids. Impressive. But I've found more. Dozens more. And they're not as easy to break as the ones you took.*

*Come to the Black Valley at the next full moon. Bring your hybrids. Bring your wolf. Bring your vampire. Bring everyone you love.*

*I'll be waiting.*

*And this time, no one leaves.*

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 138: The Mother's Farewell

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 137: The Rogue Uprising

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. He found evidence of the battle—blood-soaked earth, broken weapons, the remains of vampires who had been torn apart by something powerful and merciless. But he found no trace of the silver-eyed stranger who had saved his life. The vampire had vanished as if it had never existed.Torvin thought Kael was wasting his time. "The creature saved you. Be grateful and move on."

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 134: The Hunters' Attack

The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

The healers came and went, their faces grave, their hands glowing with magic that did nothing to restore Selene's strength. Kael sat by his mother's bedside, holding her cold hand, watching the shallow rise and fall of her chest. He had already lost his father. He couldn't lose her too.Two days passed before Selene opened her eyes.Kael had been dozing in the chair beside her bed, exhausted from days without proper sleep. When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
