Chapter 38: The Attack

Peace lasted exactly one week.

Seven days of quiet contentment. Seven days of training, of building, of *living*. Seven days of watching the hybrids grow stronger, the wolves and vampires grow closer, the camp grow more beautiful.

Lena had begun to believe that maybe—just maybe—the worst was behind them.

She walked through the settlement each morning, greeting people by name, watching children play in the new gardens, marveling at how far they'd come. The cabins stood sturdy and warm. The communal hall echoed with laughter every evening. The training grounds hummed with purposeful activity from dawn until dusk.

"We're really doing this," Mira said, falling into step beside her. "We're really building something permanent."

"We are." Lena smiled. "And it's only the beginning."

That was when the scouts came running.

---

"Attackers," one gasped, collapsing at Kael's feet. He was young, barely more than a pup, his face pale with terror and exhaustion. "Dozens of them. Maybe more. Coming from the east."

Kael was on his feet instantly, his golden eyes blazing. "Who? Lilith's forces?"

"We don't know. They're not flying any banner. But they're moving fast, and they're armed." The scout struggled for breath. "Swords. Crossbows. Dark magic. I felt it—like ice in my veins."

Lena appeared beside him, Caspian close behind. "How long do we have?"

"Hours. Maybe less." The scout's voice shook. "They have wolves with them. Wolves I've never seen. Wolves with *red* eyes."

Kael's jaw tightened. Corrupted wolves. Lilith's handiwork.

"Get everyone to shelter." His voice was steady, commanding. "The hybrids, the children, anyone who can't fight. We'll hold them at the perimeter."

Lena nodded and ran.

---

The next hours were chaos, but it was organized chaos—the kind that came from months of training and preparation.

Lena moved through the camp like a blur, directing people to safety, her voice calm even as her heart raced. Mira helped, her hybrid strength useful for carrying children and calming the frightened. Rina stayed close, refusing to leave Lena's side.

"You should be in shelter," Lena told her, not for the first time.

"You're not." Rina's small face was set with determination. She was only twelve, but her eyes held the kind of wisdom that came from surviving things no child should have to survive. "I'm staying with you."

Lena didn't have time to argue. She grabbed Rina's hand and kept moving.

Around them, the camp transformed. Wolves shifted, their fur bristling with readiness. Vampires armed themselves with weapons honed over centuries. Hybrids gathered in small groups, their unique abilities primed for whatever was coming.

"First line is ready," Caspian reported, appearing at her side. "Kael's holding the eastern approach with fifty wolves."

"Second line?"

"Forming now. Vampires, mostly. They'll catch anyone who breaks through."

Lena nodded, her mind racing through contingencies. "And the hybrids?"

"With you. Where you wanted them." His red eyes met hers. "They're ready, Lena. We're all ready."

She squeezed his hand—just for a moment—then turned to face the east.

"They're coming."

---

The attack came at dusk, just as the scouts had predicted.

Dark figures poured out of the forest—dozens of them, then hundreds, armed with swords and crossbows and dark magic that made the air itself feel *wrong*. They hit the perimeter hard, overwhelming the first line of defenders before they could fully react.

Kael met them head-on, his wolf form massive and terrible. He tore through the first wave, buying time for others to organize. His golden fur was soon streaked with red—some his own, most belonging to enemies who'd learned too late what it meant to challenge an alpha protecting his pack.

Caspian moved like smoke behind him, his ancient power felling enemies with cold precision. He didn't waste movement, didn't waste energy—just appeared and disappeared, each strike finding its mark with deadly accuracy.

But there were too many. Always too many.

"Fall back!" Kael's roar carried across the battlefield. "Fall back to the second line!"

Lena watched from the camp's edge, her light flickering with the desperate need to help. Every instinct screamed at her to join the fight, to protect her people, to *do* something. But she'd promised to protect the hybrids, to stay with them, to keep them safe.

Rina tugged her hand. "You want to fight. I can see it."

"I need to protect you."

"You need to protect everyone." Rina's young eyes were old—so old. "Go. I'll stay with Mira."

Lena hesitated—one heartbeat, two. She looked at the battle raging at the tree line, at her people falling, at Kael and Caspian fighting against impossible odds.

Then she kissed Rina's forehead and ran toward the fight.

---

Her light exploded as she reached the front lines.

It wasn't gentle this time—not the warm, healing glow she'd shared with wounded hybrids or frightened children. This was *fury*. Golden radiance blasted through the attackers, pushing them back, blinding them, *burning* them with the force of her love made manifest.

The corrupted wolves screamed as the light touched them—not in pain, but in *release*. The red faded from their eyes. The darkness lifted. Some of them even stopped fighting, looking around in confusion, wondering where they were and how they'd gotten there.

Wolves and vampires rallied behind Lena, their morale soaring at the sight of their leader fighting beside them. The tide of battle shifted. What had been a desperate defense became something else—a counterattack, a push forward, a *victory* waiting to happen.

"Lena!" Kael appeared at her side, bloodied but unbowed. His golden eyes blazed with pride and love and desperate relief. "You should be with the hybrids."

"They're safe. I'm needed here." She looked at the battlefield—at the bodies, the chaos, the *fear*. "We can win this. Together."

Caspian joined them, his red eyes blazing. "Their leader—I saw her. A woman, dark-haired, beautiful. She's not here."

"Lilith?"

"Not Lilith. Someone else. Someone working for her." Caspian's voice was grim. "This feels like a probe. Like they're testing us."

Lena's blood ran cold. "Then this is just a distraction."

"A distraction from what?"

---

The answer came too fast.

Fire.

Behind them, the camp erupted in flames.

Lena spun, her heart stopping. The shelters—the hybrid cabins—the *children*—all of it burning. Orange and red consumed the homes they'd worked so hard to build. Black smoke rose against the darkening sky. And through it all, she could hear screaming.

"No." The word tore from her throat. "NO!"

She ran, faster than she'd ever run, her light blazing a path through the chaos. Behind her, Kael and Caspian followed, their shouts lost in the roar of fire.

The camp was a nightmare.

Buildings collapsed in showers of sparks. People ran in every direction, some carrying children, some dragging wounded friends. Shadows moved where shadows shouldn't move—attackers who'd circled around, who'd waited for the right moment, who'd *planned* this while Lena and her warriors were focused on the front lines.

Lena found Mira at the center, surrounded by hybrids, fighting desperately. Her oldest friend's face was streaked with soot and blood, but her eyes held the same fierce determination Lena had always loved.

"They came from behind," Mira gasped. "We didn't—we couldn't—"

"The children?" Lena's voice shook.

"Safe. Rina got them to the caves. But—" Mira pointed.

Celeste stood at the edge of the fire, watching. Not fighting. Not fleeing. Just... *watching*. And smiling.

Lena understood everything in that moment.

"The distraction," she breathed. "The attack—it was never about winning. It was about drawing us away. Leaving them vulnerable."

"And she helped them." Mira's voice was venom. "Celeste. She opened the gate. I saw her. She let them in while we were all watching the tree line."

Lena's light flared with rage so intense it nearly blinded her.

---

The battle turned after that, but not in the way Lena had hoped.

Kael rallied the wolves, pushing the remaining attackers back toward the forest. Caspian organized fire brigades, using vampire speed to save what could be saved. Lena and the hybrids fought with desperate fury, protecting their home, their family, their *love*.

But the damage was done.

By dawn, the attackers were gone—those who could still walk, anyway. Those who couldn't lay where they'd fallen, enemy and friend alike.

By midday, the fires were out, leaving nothing but smoldering ruins where homes had once stood.

By evening, they'd counted the cost.

Seven dead. Twenty-three wounded. A third of the camp destroyed.

And Celeste—nowhere to be found.

---

They gathered in what remained of the great hall that night.

Wolves and vampires and hybrids, huddled together, grieving together, *surviving* together. The roof was half-gone, the walls charred, but it was still standing. Still theirs.

Lena stood at the center, Kael on one side, Caspian on the other. Her light had dimmed to almost nothing—she'd poured everything into the fight, into the rescue, into keeping her people alive.

"She did this," Lena said quietly. Her voice was hoarse, raw from screaming orders and crying smoke. "Celeste. She's been working for Lilith all along."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd—shock, anger, grief. Some faces showed betrayal, others grim acceptance. They'd all wondered about Celeste, about her sudden change, about whether someone who'd served Lilith for so long could truly be trusted.

"The attack was a distraction." Lena continued, forcing the words out. "She opened the gates. She let them in." Her voice hardened. "And she's still out there. Probably on her way to Lilith right now."

Kael spoke, his voice rough with exhaustion and rage. "We'll find her. We'll make her pay."

"No." Lena's voice was quiet but certain. "We'll do something better. We'll rebuild. We'll grow stronger. We'll make sure that no matter what Lilith throws at us, we survive."

Caspian's hand found hers. "Together."

"Together." Lena looked at her people—her family, her home, her *reason*. "We rebuild. We heal. And when Lilith comes again—and she will—we'll be ready."

The crowd stirred. Hope flickered in tired eyes.

"We've survived worse," Mira called out. "We've lost more. And we're still here."

"We're still here," others echoed.

Lena felt tears prick her eyes—not of sadness, but of gratitude. These people. This family. This *love*.

"Then let's get to work."

---

The rebuilding started at dawn.

There was no time for grief, no space for mourning. The dead would be honored later. For now, the living needed shelter.

Wolves hauled timber from the forest. Vampires used their speed to transport supplies. Hybrids worked alongside everyone else, their unique abilities making the impossible possible. Within days, new cabins began to rise from the ashes.

Lena worked harder than anyone, driven by guilt and determination and the desperate need to make things right. Kael and Caspian worked beside her, never leaving her side, their presence a constant reminder that she wasn't alone.

"It wasn't your fault," Kael told her on the third night. They sat on a pile of lumber, too tired to move, watching the stars appear.

"Feels like it was."

"I know." He pulled her close. "But it wasn't. Celeste made her choices. Lilith made hers. You did everything you could."

"Is that supposed to make me feel better?"

"No." He kissed her forehead. "But it's the truth. And you've always been able to handle the truth."

Caspian appeared with water and bread, settling on her other side. "Eat. You've barely touched food in three days."

"Not hungry."

"I don't care." His voice was gentle but firm. "Eat anyway."

She ate. For them. Because they asked. Because they loved her.

The healers had done everything they could, but Selene's body was failing faster than their magic could repair. The visions had drained her of strength, of color, of the spark that had made her the pack's most revered priestess. Her skin was pale, almost translucent, and her storm-gray eyes had lost their sharpness, replaced by a distant, unfocused gaze that made Kael's chest ache every time he looked at her.She had refused to stay in the healers' tent, insisting on returning to her own cabin, where the walls held memories of Aldric and the fire kept her warm. Kael had carried her there himself, settling her into the bed she had shared with his father, propping her up with pillows so she could see the window and the forest beyond.

The attack on the settlement was not an isolated incident. In the weeks that followed, reports came in from across the pack's territory—rogue wolves attacking hunting parties, raiding supply caches, terrorizing isolated families. They moved with a coordination that suggested direction, purpose, someone pulling their strings from the shadows.Seraphine.Her name hung in the air whenever the elders gathered to discuss the attacks, a specter that no one could see but everyone could feel. She had been building her army for centuries, collecting wolves and vampires who were willing to serve her in exchange for power, and now she was turning that army toward the Northern Pack.

  • They Both Wanted Me   Chapter 136: The Vision of Lena

Selene's descriptions of the hybrid grew more detailed with each passing day, as if the moon was feeding her information in fragments, piece by piece, like breadcrumbs leading Kael toward a destination he couldn't yet see. Lena was not just a woman with golden eyes and dark hair. She was a librarian, living in a small apartment in a city called Lychwood, surrounded by books she used to escape a life that had given her nothing. She had no family, no friends, no one who would notice if she disappeared. She was twenty-two years old when the moon first showed her to Selene, though the visions jumped forward and backward in time, showing her as a child, as an adolescent, as the woman she would become. She had been passed between foster homes throughout her childhood, never staying anywhere long enough to form attachments, never bein

Kael searched the forest for three days.He scoured the area around the burned camp, following every trail, investigating every shadow. The scouting mission never happened.Kael and his wolves were still hours from the eastern border when they heard the screaming. It drifted through the trees, thin and distant, carried on a wind that smelled of smoke and blood. Kael's heart lurched in his chest. He had heard wolves scream before—in battle, in grief, in the final moments of a life violently ended. But this was different. This was a whole settlement screaming."The western camp," Torvin said, his voice tight. "They're attacking the western camp."Kael didn't hesitate. He turned and ran, his paws pounding against the forest floor, his p

When he felt her fingers move in his grasp, he jerked awake, his heart pounding."Mother?"
