Chapter 1

Mom snapped at me without a second thought.

“Emma Bennett, why can’t you be more like Bella? She never asks us for money.”

Bella was always “sweetheart” or “honey.” But whenever Mom was angry with me, she used my full name. Emma Bennett.

She must have forgotten that Bella had been getting a two-hundred-dollar allowance every week since she was twelve.

My spending money came from the bottles Bella couldn’t be bothered to return. I saved them up and fed them into the recycling machine at grocery stores, one at a time.

Bella’s eyes filled with tears.

“This is my fault. Emma must be upset because the dress doesn’t come with a free gift. I’ll just pick another one.”

My brother, Ryan, shot me a glare. Then he turned to Bella with a gentle smile.

“No. You like this one. You should have it.”

I wasn’t in the mood to watch them fuss over Bella anymore. I kept my voice steady.

“You’re spending eighteen hundred and ninety dollars on Bella’s limited-edition dress. I’m asking for a tenth of that.”

Dad frowned.

“Have we never bought you anything? What will people think of us when you talk like that in public?”

Of course they’d bought me things.

Bella got a velvet cloak, made just for her to wear to the full moon ceremony.

I got a hair ribbon the tailor had made from the scraps.

Ryan saved two months of patrol pay to have the pack’s weaponsmith make Bella a hunting knife. Her name was even carved into the handle.

I got the sharpening stone that came free with it.

The sales assistant had been watching us for a while. She looked at me as if I were a child throwing a tantrum.

“I spoke to my manager. He said we could include a free pair of socks.”

She held them out. They were old stock that hadn’t sold, even on clearance.

Dad took the socks and handed them to me, his face grim.

“There. She gets the dress, you get the socks. What else do you want?”

Bella pressed a hand to her chest. Her breathing grew quick and shallow.

She was high-needs. This happened whenever our parents stopped focusing on her, even for a second.

Mom hurried to put an arm around her. Then she turned on me.

“We’re exhausted enough as it is. Can’t you make things easier for once?”

Ryan tossed me a bus pass.

“Go home. Stop ruining everyone’s day.”

I looked down. The bus pass had expired.

I was about to tell him when I glanced up. Bella was already in the car. Whatever she’d said had everyone laughing.

Ryan caught my eye, the smile still on his face.

For a moment, I froze. The last time I remembered him smiling at me like that was on my first day of kindergarten.

He’d held my hand and told me, “Don’t be scared. Whatever happens, you can always come to me.”

I closed my fingers around the useless pass. I couldn’t bring myself to walk over.

Our family’s SUV had been modified for Bella. The back seat had been replaced with two separate massage seats so she could ride in comfort.

There was room for four people.

Everyone but me.

For twelve years, I’d taken the bus and tried not to be any trouble.

Now I finally understood. It wasn’t just the car. There was no place for me in this family, either.

It was a long way home, and I had no money for another bus pass.

So I walked. By the time I got home, it was dark.

Six miles had left my feet covered in blisters. My toes were rubbed raw, and blood had soaked through my shoes.

The laughter stopped the moment I opened the door.

No one had waited for me. No one asked where I’d been. They looked at me as if I’d walked into someone else’s house.

Mom looked almost sorry, as if she’d only just remembered I existed.

“We’ve already had dinner. Should I heat up some soup for you? There’s a can in the cupboard.”

Adrian was there, too. We’d grown up together. He came over and took my hand.

“It’s okay. I brought Emma something to eat.”

I looked at him, grateful. I’d given up hoping for anything from my family. But Adrian was still the one good thing I had left.

He brought a small bag out from behind his back.

“And this is for you. A little something to celebrate getting into the academy.”

I didn’t question it. He’d only recently taken over as Alpha of the Silvermoon Pack. He’d been very busy.

I opened the bag. A small moon-shaped charm lay at the bottom.

When I looked closer, I saw a tiny crescent stamped into the metal. It was the mark of the pack’s finest jeweler.

I thanked him with a smile.

For once, someone had picked out a gift just for me.

Bella snorted. Everyone turned to her.

“See?” she said, looking pleased with herself. “What did I tell you? Emma loves freebies.”

She picked up the moonstone tiara beside her. Pale stones gleamed along its delicate metal band.

Its gift box was still sitting nearby. The crescent on it matched the one on my charm.

“I wish I could be that easy to please. Imagine getting this excited over a free charm they threw in when Adrian bought my tiara.”

Mom burst into tears the moment she saw me. She pulled me into her arms.“Emma, I’m so sorry.”I didn’t cry. I didn’t move. I stood rigid in her arms.Dad rubbed her shoulder, trying to comfort her.Ryan held out a brand-new phone.“Emma, this is for you. I should’ve got you something before.”I didn’t take it. I said nothing. The patrol took the men away, then asked me what had happened. Afterward, one of the officers turned to my parents.“She’s a remarkable young woman. How could you let things get this bad?”My parents apologized, visibly ashamed.Mom cried for a while. When I still didn’t respond, she wiped her eyes awkwardly.“Emma, say something.”I had. No one had listened. In the silence that followed, my parents finally seemed to realize where they stood.Dad sounded almost resentful.“You always do this. Are you trying to make us look like terrible parents?”I shook my head.“You know what you did. You can decide how you feel about it.”“So can I.”Dad had nothing to say. Ry

My parents and Ryan were soon on the highway.Adrian followed in his own car. He’d already asked the patrols in the packs along my route to look out for me.“Ryan, see if you can find out where Emma is.”He opened his phone. Someone had posted another update about me.I’d been on the road for three days. Working for meals and a place to sleep had helped me keep going. At first, no one wanted to help. Then, one day, it poured.A woman took pity on me and called me inside out of the rain.I washed a pile of dishes in exchange for a roast chicken. She asked where I was going. I told her I’d been accepted into Sunfang Werewolf Academy and was on my way there. My story ended up online.Once people saw it, they were less wary of me.One man pointed his phone at me and started a livestream.“I’ll give you a ride. How about you join my stream?”I shook my head and kept my eyes on the road.He swore.“Oh, cut the act. Your family’s loaded. Your sister’s online showing off all her expensive stuf

At last, Adrian broke the silence. His gaze was cold.“Bella Bennett, you really disgust me. How dare you forge an acceptance letter.”“I can’t believe I neglected Emma for you.”Bella’s eyes widened.“But you never used to treat me like this! You bought me that expensive tiara. You said you’d keep taking care of me after I started at the academy.”Adrian’s expression darkened.“I looked after you because you said your wolf was weak. You said you couldn’t handle stress and needed someone with you.”“That didn’t give you the right to lie to us.”“What about Emma?” Bella blurted out. “Are you going to run after her now?”Adrian gave a cold, disbelieving laugh.“Who do you think you are? You don’t get to put yourself in the same place as Emma.”“She’s the one I love. She always has been.”Bella went still. His own words seemed to hurt him, too. He’d always thought I was sensible. I could take care of myself. If I was upset, he could make it up to me later.Bella was different. She cried.

Dad snatched it back.“What do you mean, wrong? It has the academy’s name on it. And the seal!”“Please, sir. Let’s stay calm.”The woman tried to reassure him.Adrian stared at the letter. Suddenly, his expression changed.“Check the reference number.”The woman pulled up the admissions records and compared them with the letter.Bella raised her voice, crying.“You think I faked it? Fine! I won’t go here!”She turned to leave, but Ryan caught her arm.“Stay right there. Look at what we did to Emma because of you. You’re not walking away from this.”His face was so cold that Bella’s tears stopped. She stood frozen, staring at the brother who’d once given her anything she wanted. The woman spoke again.“I found it. This number belongs to another student who was admitted. The name has been changed, and the grades don’t match.”Mom’s eyes filled with tears.“What are you saying? We left Emma behind to bring her here, and now you’re telling me…”The woman glanced at Adrian before continuin

“That’s impossible!” Dad said at once. How could anyone walk more than a thousand miles to attend an academy in another pack’s territory? But Dad, that’s what you do when you have no money and no one left to turn to.They’d taken the only five thousand dollars I had, convinced it was money from something I’d stolen. They were the ones who’d left their own daughter with nothing.I had no other way out. All I could do was leave that house on foot and keep walking until I reached Sunfang.Dad’s friend hadn’t gone far. He’d heard the whole thing.“I wondered why a girl like that was having such a hard time. Now I know. Her own family treats her like she doesn’t matter.”They looked at one another. For a long time, no one spoke.Bella’s mouth turned down.“Mom, Dad, I don’t feel very well. Can we come back tomorrow?”Ryan answered first.“No. Tomorrow we’re going to find Emma.”Bella complained that she was sick and accused him of not caring about her. This time, he didn’t give in. He looke

On the sixth day, early check-in had begun for new students. My parents and Ryan drove Bella to campus with a car full of luggage. At the entrance, they ran into an old friend of Dad’s. He gave Dad a look they couldn’t quite read.“Robert. You have quite a daughter.”Dad looked pleased. “Our Bella’s always been special.”Mom smiled and kissed Bella’s cheek.“She has! Honestly, I worried the work would be too much for our sweetheart. And now look at her. She got into Silvermoon Werewolf Academy!”Even Ryan, who usually had little to say, couldn’t stop introducing Bella to the other students.None of them noticed how pale she was getting.Dad’s friend hesitated.“Robert. I’m talking about your other daughter.”My parents stared at him. Ryan went still, his hand frozen on the arm of a student he’d stopped to introduce to Bella. In the distance, Adrian waved to them. When Dad spoke, he barely sounded sure of himself.“Then… who do you mean?”“Who else could he mean? Emma, of course!” Mom s
