Chapter 2

Author: Footsteps Forest
My first instinct was to refuse and walk out. Then I saw two large security guards standing near the private-room entrance, and I had no idea what would happen if I simply tried to leave. The word police scared me more than I wanted to admit.

After hesitating, I reached into the deepest pocket of my backpack and took out my bank card. My scholarship money was sitting in that account, and I had been saving it to buy Grandma a hearing aid.

For four years she had been hauling cans and scrap metal to the recycling yard back home to help pay for my education, and her hearing had gotten so bad that every conversation turned into shouting. For the last year I had saved every dollar I could, so that before graduation I could take her to the best hearing clinic in the city and buy her a proper device.

After paying the restaurant, I kept the receipt. Anger burned in my chest all night.

The next morning, eyes swollen from lack of sleep, I went to Ms. Grant's office. She was sorting through a stack of nomination forms for the Statewide Outstanding Adviser Award, and she barely looked up when I came in.

"Mia? What is it?"

I set the $800 receipt on her desk and forced my voice to stay steady.

"Ms. Grant, I need to report what happened at the graduation dinner last night.

"Tessa and the others changed the time without telling me, so I missed the meal.

"Then, on their way out, they made me pay the remaining $800 balance.

"I'd like the class fund to reimburse me."

Ms. Grant stopped moving. She adjusted her glasses and frowned at the receipt.

"Mia, Tessa mentioned something about this after I left."

Her voice sounded kind, but there was no real concern in it.

"She said no one could reach you, so everyone assumed you were fine with the arrangement.

"You're all graduating soon, and sometimes it's better not to turn a small issue into a major conflict.

"And since you paid the bill, that does suggest you accepted it at the time."

She smiled faintly.

"Besides, you receive scholarships every year. Your classmates support you too, don't they?

"Without that support, you might not have gotten those awards."

I stared at her, unable to believe what I was hearing.

"I paid because the restaurant wouldn't let me leave.

"And if I covered the balance, where did the class fund go? Someone has to account for it."

Her expression hardened. She clearly did not want anyone examining the class finances, and a complaint about missing money this close to the end of the semester could damage her nomination.

"Mia, I'm up for the statewide adviser award this term, and I don't want the department dealing with unnecessary messes at graduation."

She set down her pen. "Listen to me. Treat the money as your contribution to the class and let this go."

Then her voice lowered.

"You've already accepted a very good job offer, and your graduation conduct clearance still comes through my office.

"As long as nothing unexpected happens, I can make sure everything goes smoothly."

The university's decision came down the next morning, posted to every class group chat and on the department's boards.Tessa Lang and Zoe Clark were given major disciplinary records for organizing a clique, bullying a classmate, misappropriating the class fund, and suspected extortion. Their degrees were revoked outright, and they were ordered to return every dollar they had taken, along with the class fund, within three days.Ms. Grant was removed from her advising role for gross negligence and for shielding students who had broken university rules. She was barred from consideration for any award or honor for three years, and the university circulated a formal reprimand campus-wide.That afternoon, the finance office contacted me directly. The $800 restaurant balance went back into my account, and so did the $50 "late fee" I had been forced to pay at the door. I stared at the deposit notification and finally let out a long breath.A week later came graduation. I stood alone on the

The flattering smile froze on Ms. Grant's face.Tessa and Zoe stared at me, then at Richard, then back at me. They couldn't connect the two of us. Richard Jensen was wealthy enough to be one of the university's biggest donors — how could his daughter be the girl who wouldn't pay extra for meat at lunch, with a grandmother out collecting scrap?Associate Dean Bennett and Dr. Weiss looked even worse.Richard turned toward them, his gaze sharpening."Dean Bennett."Did you hear what my daughter just said?"The associate dean flinched and wiped the sweat off his forehead. "Yes. Yes, Mr. Jensen.""She said her classmates set her up and took $800 of her scholarship money."Richard pointed at the taped receipt."The evidence is right there."I want every dollar returned to her immediately."Then his voice cooled further."As for how your department manages students, and how scholarships, class funds, discipline, and staff evaluations are handled —"if a student can be publicly sl

Associate Dean Bennett's expression changed instantly. The impatience vanished and a smile took its place. He turned to Dr. Weiss. "Our donor is here. Let's go up before we keep Mr. Jensen waiting."Then he gave Ms. Grant a sharp look. "Handle this quickly. Don't let it turn into a scene and damage the department's image."Ms. Grant nodded eagerly. "Of course. I'll take her back to campus and deal with it immediately."Before they could leave, a middle-aged man was already coming down the stairs. His gaze moved casually across the restaurant, then stopped, and something went tight in his face.I felt the weight of someone's stare and looked up instinctively. The moment I saw his face, my whole body went still. It all came back at once.I was twelve when that man walked out on Mom and me without looking back. His affair broke her, her depression got worse and worse, and one night she took an entire bottle of sleeping pills. I spent a day and a night outside the morgue while Grand

I patted Grandma's trembling hand.I had never imagined Tessa and Zoe could be this vicious. They knew how hard my family struggled, and they took my scholarship money anyway. Now they were spreading rumors about me sleeping with someone, in front of university administrators.I'd had enough."The hearing aid was paid for with scholarship money I saved over the years and money I earned tutoring."Then I looked at Tessa."You say some man is paying for me? Show actual evidence."And after that, we can talk about what you did."I reached into my pocket and pulled out the receipt Tessa had torn up and thrown away. I had gone back later, picked the pieces out of the trash, and taped them together. I held it out to the three of them."Two nights ago, our class had a graduation dinner, and Tessa deliberately changed the time without telling me."Then she arranged it with the restaurant so I'd be forced to cover the remaining $800 with my scholarship money."Tessa's eyes flickered.

Anger rose instantly."Tessa, stop making things up."Grandma had only just started using the hearing aid, but she understood enough."Young lady, what are you saying?"Mia is a good girl. She would never-"Zoe stepped closer with a fake smile."Ma'am, everyone in our class knows how much money Mia has."She normally won't even pay for meat at lunch, and now she's suddenly spending thousands on a hearing aid."We're only worried she's made a bad choice."I grabbed Grandma's hand. "Don't listen to them. We'll eat somewhere else."We had barely taken one step when Tessa and several classmates spread out and blocked us.At that moment, people started coming down from the second floor, and Tessa's expression changed immediately."Ms. Grant? You're here too?"I turned. Ms. Grant was coming down the stairs with Associate Dean Bennett and Dr. Alan Weiss, our department chair.Ms. Grant frowned at the disturbance. "Tessa? Mia? What's going on?"Tessa pointed directly at me."Ms

I crouched on the dorm balcony and watched students cheering on the field below, and the tears finally came.I was only $850 short of the hearing aid. If the graduation dinner hadn't happened, I would've had enough. Grandma's birthday was next week, and I had promised her the best gift I could give.I could see her face, every line of it. For four years she had collected scrap so I could stay in school, saving every dollar. Whenever I worried about her hearing, she just laughed it off."Mia, it doesn't matter if Grandma can't hear so well. As long as you build a good life, I'm happy."With nowhere else to turn, I finally called a number I had refused to use for years."This is Mia."My throat tightened. "I need to borrow $850. I'll pay you back after I graduate."The money arrived without a single question. I wiped my face and went straight to the hearing-aid store to pay the balance. On Grandma's birthday, I brought her into the city. She had barely traveled outside her town i
