Chapter 1

Author: Pebble
My sister, Jocelyn Weber, went into the kitchen, saw the plain dinner plates in the cabinet, and made a face.

"Solid colors are so boring. What terrible taste. These have to go."

She held out her phone to Garrett, showing him a photo.

"Garrett, I like plates with patterns like these. Aren't they so much prettier than those plain things?"

Garrett ruffled her hair indulgently.

"Then we'll change them. You always have great taste."

I stopped typing for a moment.

I watched him tell the workers to throw out every plate in the cabinet.

What a joke.

When the renovation started, he'd told me this would be my home and I could decorate it however I wanted.

I did it all myself, from the paint on the walls to the drains.

I'd even made the plates he'd just ordered them to throw away. I'd shaped each one by hand on the wheel at a pottery studio, then painted it myself.

Garrett had looked at the blisters on my hands as if seeing them hurt him.

He'd promised to take good care of the plates I'd made and treasure them.

But now all it took was for Jocelyn to say she didn't like them.

So he had the workers throw them out, just like that.

A message from Harold interrupted my thoughts.

"I'm flying home right now to pick you up. Wait for me."

I sent back one word, "Okay," and started thinking about what to take with me.

Garrett saw me staring at my phone and came over to put an arm around my shoulders.

"What are you looking at?"

I snapped out of it and quickly turned off the screen.

"Nothing. Just a work email."

Garrett could see I was flustered and clearly didn't believe me.

He reached for my phone to check it himself.

But Jocelyn spoke up behind us before he could take it. "What are you two talking about?"

She came over and casually slipped her arm through his, as though they were the couple.

"You look unhappy. Are you blaming me for ruining all your work on the house?"

She sounded innocent, but the look she gave me was smug.

That was the same innocent tone she used after taking something of mine.

Jocelyn knew I'd never dare make a scene. I'd swallow my anger and tell her it was nothing.

But I wasn't going to put up with it anymore.

"Yes. You ruined the home I worked so hard to put together."

That stopped her. She clearly hadn't expected me to say it out loud.

But she recovered quickly. Her eyes reddened, and she forced out a few tears.

"I only gave my opinion. Everyone agreed with it."

When she said everyone, she didn't mean me.

My mother came running over to scold me. "It's just decorating. You're being so petty, fighting with your own sister over this. You don't act like a werewolf at all."

My eyes stung as I watched her take Jocelyn's side without asking a single question.

When I was growing up, if there was one of something in our house, it was hers.

If there were two of them, they were both hers.

Only what she didn't want was mine.

And if I ever argued, I was the difficult one.

My father stood behind her, disgust written all over his face.

"You're a werewolf, and you cry this easily? You ought to be ashamed."

But my sister was crying too.

Why did one tear from her make everyone feel sorry for her?

All I ever got was that look of disgust.

I held the tears back and looked over at Garrett.

We'd loved each other for five years. Would seeing me cry hurt him even a little? Would he stand up for me?

But his eyes never left Jocelyn. He gently and patiently wiped away her tears without sparing me a glance.

He didn't seem to care that I was being scolded and treated unfairly.

I wiped the corner of my eye, turned, and walked out of that house.

Garrett's POVWhen Garrett drove back to the house, Evelyn's parents were cleaning up after the workers in the newly redone master bedroom and the small room beside it.The curtains and bedding in the master bedroom were sky blue, Jocelyn's favorite color. The vanity had been custom-built for her.The small bedroom that was supposed to be Evelyn's study was now a walk-in closet filled with Jocelyn's clothes and dresses. The books that had been there had been dumped outside the door.Evelyn's mother put the broom away and saw Garrett and Jocelyn come in with shopping bags. She looked past them."Where's Evelyn? The bridal shop just delivered the dress. They want her to try it on so they can alter it if it doesn't fit."Garrett stopped loosening his tie."She isn't back yet?"He looked around, then pushed open the doors of the other two bedrooms. Both empty. No sign of her. He'd only just calmed down. Now his anxiety was rising again.Evelyn's mother looked confused."No. Weren't the two

Garrett's POVIn the pet clothing store, Garrett trailed after Jocelyn, pushing the cart.He kept checking his phone, growing irritated.Three hours had passed since he'd sent that message. And somehow Evelyn still hadn't answered him.In five years, that had never once happened.Even at their worst, when they weren't speaking, she'd replied within seconds whenever he texted first.Jocelyn was browsing the racks ahead of him and didn't notice anything was wrong. She held up two puppy coats in different colors. "Garrett, which looks better, blue or white?"Normally, seeing her struggle to choose, he'd have said, "Take both," without thinking twice. Now his mind was elsewhere. When he didn't respond, Jocelyn called his name again, puzzled. "Garrett?"Garrett snapped out of it and put his phone in his pocket. He glanced at the two coats she was holding. Then he looked at the rack and spotted a pink one.He pointed to it without thinking."Get the pink one. Evelyn likes pink."Jocelyn's ey

An hour later, they were just about done eating.I was about to stand when another message came in from Harold."I've landed. Where are you?"I sent him my location, and he replied right away. "Wait for me."I put the phone away and saw that they weren't leaving yet.As I wondered what they were waiting for, the door to our private dining room opened. A server carried in a box and set it in front of Jocelyn. She looked genuinely surprised.Garrett smiled as he opened it.When Jocelyn saw what was inside, she threw her arms around Garrett and kissed his cheek in delight."Garrett, how did you know I wanted a dog? I love this surprise!"Garrett hugged her back. "How could I forget anything you tell me?"Beside them, my parents beamed. The four of them looked like a happy, loving family. And I wasn't part of it.The puppy came out of the box and ran to my feet.I quickly covered my nose and kept trying to shoo it away. I accidentally hit it with my foot, and it barked in fright.Jocelyn r

My parents were waiting at the restaurant entrance. When Jocelyn got out of the car, they went over to hug her, smiling. But when they saw me, their smiles froze."What are you doing here?"Realizing how that sounded, they quickly backtracked. "What we mean is, where did you disappear to this afternoon? We looked everywhere for you."They didn't sound convinced themselves, and I didn't call them on it.When we were little, my sister took my doll, and my parents told me not to make a fuss.I ran out angry. By the time I came back, they'd finished dinner. My mother brought me a plate of leftovers and called me selfish. She said I'd worried everyone and they'd spent ages out looking for me.I didn't say anything. I forced down the leftovers despite the lump in my throat.I'd been crouching by the front door the whole time. All they'd had to do was open it to see me.That was the day I accepted that my parents didn't love me.At the table, Jocelyn took the seat in the middle.I was about t

I went back to the rental and started packing. Before long, I heard a key turn in the front door.Garrett came in with a moving crew.He told them to start loading the truck. When I came out of the bedroom, surprise crossed his face."Weren't you at the new house? When did you get back?"He hadn't even noticed when I left.I answered flatly, "Not long ago.""Good, then. There's something I want to tell you."Garrett pulled me aside."From now on, the master bedroom and the small room next to it belong to Jocelyn. Don't go into either room without asking her. You need to respect her space."For a second, I froze. Then I laughed.I was supposed to be his mate, yet I didn't even deserve the master bedroom.Garrett rushed to justify himself, looking guilty."If you hadn't made her cry, none of this would be happening. This is mostly your fault."Let her have those two rooms to make up for it. Evelyn, don't be difficult about this."I looked at him for a long time and couldn't say anything.
