Chapter 1

Jacob Larson, my older brother, gasped on the other end of the phone before chuckling. "What, has our heiress finally understood how cruel society can be and decided to return home to take over the family business?"

There was silent support and encouragement in his familiar, lighthearted teasing.

Unfortunately, I was in no mood to joke. "Yes. I'd like to go back. Can you arrange it?"

Sensing something amiss, Jacob had a feeling that I was upset and hurt. He wasted no time in agreeing to my request. "Come back, then. The doors of Larson Group will always be open to you."

I'd just hung up when Human Resources called to apologize and rehire me.

Not long after, Noah Gardner called. "Eloise, it's been a day since you've given me the cold shoulder. Have you calmed down?"

He spoke arrogantly, putting on what he thought was a generous front.

"Cut me some slack. Isabelle couldn't get a job and ended up sick from anxiety. Try to understand, Eloise."

Tears sprang to my red-rimmed eyes as I shook with anger. "I'm your girlfriend, yet you reported me to HR because of Isabelle Buchanan! That's outright betrayal, Noah!"

"I mean, it's not like I had a choice!" Dismissive of my concerns, Noah launched into a lengthy analysis as if I were a child in need of lecturing. "Isabelle couldn't find a suitable job and got so anxious that she'd burst into tears for seemingly no reason.

"The work at Larson Group is simple but pays well, and the company has a great platform. It's perfect for her.

"Besides, you're highly competent; you could get a new job with just a few more applications. I don't know why you're getting so worked up."

I sputtered. "You knew that I stayed up late for several nights in a row and was super stressed over this job, Noah.

"I only applied to Larson Group because you have an internship there, but you made a report about me just as I was about to get in! What's the big idea?"

Upon hearing this, Noah growled, "Is your heart made of stone, Eloise? How have I never realized this selfish side of you? Isabelle is your junior, so shouldn't you help her out?

"It's just a job. Are you going to suffer humiliation over it?"

"Did you just snap at me?"

My hands and feet went cold. I couldn't believe these scathing words had come out of Noah's mouth. "If it's 'just a job', why did you report me and let Isabelle in instead? Why not let her find her own job?"

"Why should we go through the trouble when there's already a position open?" Noah seemed pleased with my misfortune. "Just hand in a few more applications.

"In the time you took to hash things out with me here, you could have been job-hunting. You're just wasting time here!"

He let out a long sigh. "Eloise, I've always thought of you as generous and gracious. I never expected you to be so petty. I'm really disappointed in you.

"Are you taking this out on me because you flunked the interview and couldn't show off in class?"

The venomous words stabbed through my heart and made it bleed. Petty, he'd called me. Why should I have to be petty about an internship?

His internship at Larson Group was the only reason I even bothered with the interview in the first place. I'd simply wanted to be with him.

If I'd wanted to get into Larson Group, Jacob would only need to say the word, and I'd be appointed to management. The internship was nothing to me.

But I didn't want to waste my breath on Noah. My heart was shattered. All I wanted was to get back at Noah and Isabelle and have them punished.

I sighed quietly, but Noah seemed to think I'd compromised and been forced to accept his decision. Emboldened, he pointed out with mock charity, "Alright. I know you've had it hard. How about I hook you up with a few smaller companies?

"One of them is bound to take you in. It won't be like working for Larson Group, of course, but it's still a decent jumping-off point for you."

He was insistent, as if he were granting me some heaven-blessed favor.

I cut him off coolly, "No, thanks."

Noah snorted. "You're graduating soon. Are you sure you can land a good job without me?"

"Oh, I'd hate to bother you, Noah. God forbid I get through an interview only for someone to report me, then swoop in and steal my job before I even start. I'll figure out my own career, so you and Isabelle can quit worrying your pretty little heads."

My sarcasm pissed him off. "At least show some self-awareness, Eloise! You wouldn't have passed Larson Group's interview without my coaching! Use your brain, woman. You're nothing without me!"

Everyone in the conference room rose from their seats instinctively and bowed their heads in respect. The elderly man who'd entered the room was the founder of Larson Group—the company's retired and reclusive chairman. He was also my grandfather.Grandpa surveyed the room, his knifelike gaze finally landing on Noah and Isabelle, both frozen with fear.At last, he turned to look at me, and warm affection bloomed across his solemn, wizened face. "This is my granddaughter and Jacob's biological younger sister."What's so wrong about my granddaughter working as a special assistant in my company after getting the job through her own hard work? Who's been slandering my granddaughter, the heiress of Larson Group?"The entire conference room went into shock. Everyone's jaw dropped as if they'd just come upon the biggest plot twist.Noah and Isabelle looked like lightning had struck them, and they looked close to passing out.Jacob took his cue and stood up, projecting a document on the

Only a few days passed before a notice was sent to my office. The group's disciplinary committee had received many complaints from actual staff members and requested my cooperation as they looked into my so-called "inappropriate relationship" with Jacob.I became the first special assistant in Larson Group's history to be openly investigated by the disciplinary committee for rumors of an illicit affair. The moment the news broke, the company erupted in an uproar.Noah and Isabelle, believing they had dirt on me, encouraged their co-workers to pressure the board of directors into punishing me and clearing the company's good name.Isabelle even orchestrated an accidental run-in outside the office building. She deliberately cut me off and grabbed my arm, sobbing as she begged, "Just apologize and admit your mistake, Eloise! Stop dragging Mr. Larson into this mess! We'll speak up for you if you simply apologize!"She'd brought the waterworks, too, making such a show out of this that

After the meeting, Noah ran up to me and tried to grab my hand, but the bodyguard next to me kept him from getting near."Ellie, hear me out! This was all Isabelle's plan! She put me up to it! I wasn't in my right mind!" Out of desperation, Noah pushed Isabelle under the bus.I eyed him frostily. "That's Ms. Slater to you, Mr. Gardner. Work is the only thing I'll talk to you about while we're in the office."I then spun on my heels and walked away without sparing him a backward glance.I spotted Isabelle standing nearby, glowering at Noah. The next second, she fished out her phone. She looked like she was calling someone.I knew she wouldn't give up so easily. She was looking for a new ally, someone dependable she could use.I, on the other hand, had already laid out a trap for her.…Noah and Isabelle's suspension didn't stave off their attempts at payback. If anything, it only deepened their grudge.Soon, a slew of new rumors began to slowly spread through the company, and t

"I… I didn't! It was a bug! There must have been a bug in the system!" Noah insisted defensively, fumbling over his words as his eyes darted around in wild panic.Isabelle immediately stood as well, feigning worry as she chimed in, "That must be it, Ms. Slater. The company's system acts up from time to time. Noah couldn't have meant to hide the report."She was still trying to pin the blame on technology.I took in their rough-hewn acting but did not call them out right away. Instead, I calmly turned around, picked up the remote, and clicked on the next slide.A clear image of the daily activity log in the company system's backend was displayed on the big screen. Noah's maneuver, marked in red, stood out from the page like a sore thumb. It was irrefutable evidence that he was the saboteur."I don't know about the bug in the company's system. I do know, however, that the system log won't lie. Noah, this is a matter of trust and good faith in the workplace. Those have nothing to do

I felt everyone's gaze focus on me. Noah and Isabelle could barely keep the corners of their mouths from quirking upward.I held George's stare and simply smiled. "Thank you for your question, Mr. Lewitt. It's very important to our discussion."With a click of the remote, I brought up the appendix of the slide I'd been presenting. The detailed marketing report on the rival product's sub-brand was blown up on the big screen."We've not only taken into account the point you made, but also deeply analyzed it and came up with a counter strategy. I didn't mention it in the main report because I view this as an opportunity for us, not a threat."Composed and gracious, I explained the data and conclusion presented in the report in detail. I not only answered George's question perfectly and smoothly, but also reinforced that the market placement for my proposed product line-up was correct.George grimaced slightly.Isabelle noticed things going south for her and Noah and quickly interjec

Not long after my direct appointment as the CEO's special assistant, I faced my first big challenge. I had to come up with an internal project proposal, a task that was key to proving myself.Naturally, Noah and Isabelle wouldn't pass up the chance to make this even harder for me. The latter started feigning concern for me and even showed up at my office."You've been working too hard, Ms. Slater." Isabelle carefully set a mug of coffee on my desk. "I heard you were working on a proposal for a new product line-up."George Lewitt from the marketing department has valuable experience in this kind of work. He may be a little odd, but please don't take anything he says personally."She sounded like she meant well, but in truth, George was the loudest dissenting voice on this proposal. He was also Noah's ally in the marketing department.Isabelle was misguiding me, hoping I'd walk right into her trap.I saw through her crude performance and smoothly took the coffee. "Is that so?
