Chapter 2 The Agreement

Author: Sean Erby
I was escorted to my brother's company, the core laboratory for the Genesis project.

Everything here bore Luke's mark.

Relief washed over their faces when the employees saw me. They genuinely looked as if they had been delivered their saving grace.

"Mr. Henderson, you're finally back!"

"Now that you're here, we're certain that the project is in good hands!"

My father, Joshua, stood beside me, basking in their flattery as if I truly were his genius son who had come back from the dead.

"Luke just recovered, so please bear with him." He pushed me toward the main control console. "Luke, get started. Show everyone what you can do."

I stared at the complicated streams of data on the screen, my mind completely blank. I majored in history in college. I didn't know the first thing about quantum physics.

Just then, the laboratory door was kicked open. A man in a black jacket strode in, followed by several aggressive-looking board members.

He was tall, and his face was all sharp angles as a defiant smile played at the corner of his mouth.

That was Aiden Shaw. He was my brother's biggest rival back when he was alive, and the only madman in the industry who could go head-to-head with him.

"Luke, I heard you came back from the dead. So, I just had to come pay my respects." Aiden's gaze fell on my face like a blade.

My father's expression darkened. "Aiden! Watch your mouth!"

Aiden scoffed. He didn't even bother looking at him. Instead, he walked straight up to me.

He reached out and suddenly grabbed my chin, forcing me to look up. "Let's see here. Did the fall fry your brain, or did it somehow make you braver?"

His fingers were cold, and his grip was painfully tight around my chin.

Willow immediately rushed over and slapped his hand away. "Aiden! That's enough!"

Aiden glanced at her, his gaze taking on a suggestive edge. "Willow, there's no need to be so formal with me."

Willow's face went pale for a moment, but she quickly regained her composure. "Please show him some respect."

My father was shaking with rage as he pointed at Aiden. "Y-You! Security!"

"Dad." I suddenly spoke up. My voice was quiet, but the entire room fell silent.

I gently moved Willow's protective hand aside and looked Aiden straight in the eye. "Mr. Shaw, it's been a while."

My father and mother both froze.

Aiden raised an eyebrow, seemingly surprised. "Oh? You remember me?"

He leaned closer and lowered his voice, so only the two of us could hear.

"When Luke jumped, his head hit the ground and burst like a watermelon. Yours, though… they did a pretty damn good job stitching it back together."

My heart clenched.

He let go of me and straightened, his voice returning to normal. "Your so-called Genesis project is nothing but a scam. I'm here today to expose you."

He tossed a document onto the main control console.

"This is an agreement signed by the board and me. Either produce measurable results within three months and prove your theory, or you and your family can get the hell out of this building."

My father was so overcome with anger that he clutched his chest and began coughing violently. "Y-You're taking advantage of our situation!"

"Dad, calm down." I steadied him, but my eyes never left Aiden.

I smiled and picked up the agreement. "Fine. I'll sign it."

  • They Made Me My Brother   Chapter 9 Rising from the Ashes

A year later, the project Aiden and I had been working on finally had a breakthrough. We won a prestigious national research award, and the company's market value increased tenfold.I was no longer Luke's shadow, nor was I a stand-in for the Henderson family.I was Julian Henderson. I was a man who had reached the top of the industry through his own abilities.I saw Aiden on the day of the awards ceremony. He was leaning against the wall at the end of the hallway, smoking. The smoke curled around him, making it impossible to see his expression clearly.I walked over and handed him a bottle of water. "You should quit. Smoking is bad for you."He took the bottle and stubbed out his cigarette. "Julian, do you hate your brother?"The question caught me off guard. Then, I smiled. "I used to. I hated him for taking all the glory and all the love, but not anymore."I looked out the window at the countless lights shining across the city. "He was just someone who was even more pitiful

  • They Made Me My Brother   Chapter 8 The Last Letters

The press conference was over. The Henderson family had become the laughingstock of the entire industry. To protect themselves, the Rivers family immediately announced that they were calling off the engagement with the Henderson family and were suing Willow for damaging the family's reputation.I later heard from the grapevine that Willow had been forcibly sent overseas to a psychiatric hospital. My father had suffered a stroke and was lying in a hospital bed, partially paralyzed and barely able to speak. My mother remained by his side the entire time. She came to see me once, having found me outside the joint laboratory Aiden and I had just established. She looked much older. Most of her hair had turned white, and her eyes were vacant as she looked at me. The arrogance she had once carried was gone."Julian…" she called my name in a dry, hoarse voice. "Your father wants to see you."I looked at her without saying a word. She grabbed my arm, tears streaming down her face. "I

The deadline for the bet was upon me. The press conference was packed with reporters and industry heavyweights.Every eye was fixed on the stage. Aiden stood on one side, while I stood on the other. My parents and Willow sat in the front row, tension written all over their faces.According to the proceedings, I was supposed to present the final results of the Genesis project first.I walked onto the stage and opened the presentation. The first slide showed a photo of my brother, Luke.Beneath it was a single line: "In Memory of a Fallen Genius."A commotion broke out in the audience while my parents' faces instantly went stark white.I ignored them and forged on. Instead of presenting any technical results, I played the video of my brother's confession."I shouldn't have stolen what belonged to you… I shouldn't have destroyed you…" My brother's desperate voice echoed throughout the venue. The entire room erupted. Camera flashes went off like crazy, aimed at both Aiden and me.

I didn't go looking for Aiden. Instead, I went to my brother's grave. His photo was etched onto the cold gravestone, that eternally confident smile frozen until time eroded everything away."Luke, you were such an idiot." I placed the black notebook in front of the gravestone. "They used you, and you were too stupid to see it."The night wind was bitterly cold, making my face sting. I sat there for a long time, sitting there and staring at nothing until the sky began to lighten.…I returned to the company the next day like nothing was out of the ordinary. Sure enough, Willow was already there. There were faint dark circles beneath her eyes. Clearly, she had not slept a wink last night."Luke, where did you go last night?" she asked tremulously."I went to see some old friends." I walked past her and headed straight for my office. She followed me inside and closed the door behind her. "Luke, we need to talk."She took a deep breath, as if she had finally made up her mind. "The

When I returned to the company, I immediately called a meeting with the core members of the project.I presented my revised proposal to them. The conference room erupted."Mr. Henderson, you've just completely overturned your previous theory!""This is too risky! It means starting the entire project from scratch!""I object! This is a waste of time and resources!"Their objections came one after another. My parents rushed over after hearing the commotion. The moment they saw my new proposal, their faces turned livid."This is ridiculous!" My father slammed his palm against the table. "Luke! Do you even know what you're doing? This is the work you've spent years on. You can't just throw it all out!"My mother became frantic as well. "Luke, don't be hasty! There isn't much time left before the deadline for the bet agreement!"I looked at them coldly. "This is my project. I make the decisions here."I swept my gaze across the agitated crowd in the conference room."If anyone h

  • They Made Me My Brother   Chapter 4 The Thief's Secret

I opened the folder named "THIEF." To my confusion, there was only one document inside. When I opened it, I found a diary sitting inside. It wasn't written in my brother's handwriting, so it clearly belonged to someone else. The diary's owner had meticulously documented how my brother had stolen another team's core idea, disguised it as his own theory, and ultimately used it to create the Genesis project. At the very end of the diary, it read, "Luke Henderson, you stole my life from me. I will never let you off the hook even when I die."The date at the bottom was the day before my brother's death.Cold sweat instantly soaked my back. My brother had actually stolen his so-called genius theory.Did that mean that he had killed himself out of guilt by jumping from the building?I closed the document, my heart pounding wildly.Just then, someone knocked on the study door. "Luke, I made you some coffee."It was Willow.I quickly restored the computer to its original login screen
