Chapter 2

Author: Mingo
The next morning, I went to a hair salon.

The stylist rinsed my hair four times before finally setting down the showerhead.

"The glue's basically set your hair. We'll have to cut all of it."

I accepted reality.

"Cut it."

The scissors opened and closed. The long hair I'd kept for ten years fell to the floor, strand by strand.

I thought about when Ethan and I first got together.

He knew I loved long hair. He'd bought a brush specifically so he could learn to do my hair.

His hands were so clumsy he'd yank my hair and make me wince, but he'd still look proud of himself.

"On our wedding day, I'll give you a long-haired princess style."

"After that, I'll be your prince. I'll love you, protect you, and spend my whole life with you."

But fairy tales are just fairy tales.

I was the only one who actually believed.

The stylist wrapped a cape around me and tried to comfort me.

"Short actually suits your face shape."

I looked at the stranger in the mirror—pale and unfamiliar.

"Thank you."

When I got home, the entryway light was off.

Chloe's social media had updated.

Four people at a drive-in theater on the outskirts of town. Each holding a bucket of popcorn. In the last frame, all four of them gave a thumbs-up.

The caption: "Beautiful family day."

I stared at it for a long time.

My parents had promised to take a family photo with me today, before the wedding.

So in their eyes, "family" could exist without me in it.

They got back after ten that night.

When they saw my short hair, Chloe burst out laughing.

"Sis, your hair looks so weird now."

My mother frowned and scolded me.

"You could have just trimmed a little. Why cut so much? Did you even think about the wedding?"

Chloe showed off her curly hair in front of me.

"Sis, I got a new hairstyle for your wedding too. Isn't it pretty?"

I noticed a velvet ribbon in her hair. The rhinestones sparkled under the light.

It was the ribbon Ethan had given me on our third anniversary.

"That's my ribbon."

Chloe said, "You cut your hair short anyway. You don't need it."

"It's still mine."

I reached to take it. Chloe ducked behind my mother, looking hurt.

My mother blocked me. "Chloe's right. You don't need a ribbon. What's the harm in lending it to her for a few days?"

From the couch, my father's impatient voice.

"It's just a ribbon. What's there to fight over?"

"Once you marry Ethan, you'll be the family's Donna. Stop acting like a child."

I looked at Ethan.

He was unscrewing a bottle of water. He didn't even look up.

"What ribbon?"

My heart sank.

"Our third anniversary. You gave it to me."

He thought for a long time. He didn't seem to remember.

"If Chloe likes it, let her wear it. It matches her outfit today."

Chloe spun around for me.

"See? Even Ethan says it's mine now."

I didn't argue anymore. I smiled and said:

"Fine. If you want it, take it."

Not just the ribbon.

My fiancé. This family.

I didn't want them anymore either.

That night, my email received the contract from the Northern Research Institute.

Three-year contract. Once signed and inside the institute, I would have no contact with the outside world.

After signing, I started packing.

My mother came in with a plate of fruit. She saw the suitcase on the bed and blinked.

"What are you packing?"

I didn't answer.

She quickly came up with her own explanation.

"Right. You're getting married next week anyway. All your things will be moved to Ethan's place."

Passing the closet, she pulled out a camel coat with the tags still on.

"You haven't worn this, right? Chloe's been wanting this color."

I looked at her. I almost laughed.

"Take it."

Her face lit up.

"That's how a big sister should be. Stop bickering with your sister from now on."

She left happily with the coat.

She didn't even notice.

Besides the suitcase on the bed, there was a plane ticket to the north.

After my parents left, Ethan came too.He looked worse than I'd imagined. Dark stubble covered his chin. In his hand was the ring I'd left behind."Vivian, can we talk? Just ten minutes."I checked my watch. "I have a group meeting at two. I have eight minutes."Ethan smiled bitterly. When we were together, I always said we had all the time in the world. Now, facing him, I didn't even have ten minutes.I took him to the institute's cafeteria. The moment we sat down, he lowered his head and apologized."The glue—that was my fault.""The dress—that was my fault too.""Back then, I really thought Chloe was just playing around. I didn't think that much about it."I nodded. "I know."He seemed unprepared for how calm I was. He blinked."So... can you give me another chance? Come back with me."I didn't answer. I smiled."Come back with you, to be the housewife with the chopped-off hair, the Donna who manages everything behind you?""In your eyes, you never saw the real me. You always ignore

A week later. My parents found the Northern Research Institute where I was now working. When I came downstairs after finishing an experiment, the security guard told me they had arrived. They were both stopped outside the institute's main gate. They looked much worse than before. My mother, who had always cared about her appearance, had gray hair.My father, who had always cared about face, had wrinkled clothes. They were holding a box of cake. When they saw me, their eyes went red."Vivian, you finally came."But I asked calmly, "Is there something you need?"They clearly froze. The old me would never have spoken to them like this.My father cleared his throat."Come home with us. Whatever it is, we can talk about it at home.""This is my home," I said. His face couldn't hold it together. "You're grown up now. Why are you still throwing childish tantrums..."That sentence sounded very familiar. When Chloe bullied me as a child, they said I was the older sister and shouldn't throw tant

On my third day at the institute, I officially started work. The new project had just launched. I was so busy I had to schedule even my water breaks.During lunch, a colleague handed me a phone."Is the person in this video you?"It was a prank video. The subject was me.The moment I pushed open the door, glue poured down on my head.My carefully prepared look turned into a disaster in an instant. The video also spliced in clips of me being pranked over the years. The title: [Congrats to my sister on her wedding today. It already had hundreds of thousands of views. But the comment section had gone in the opposite direction from what she wanted."This is a prank? This is no sense of boundaries.""Oh my god, she's getting married. How could they post something like this? To make the bride a joke?""What's wrong with this f

It was completely dark outside. At the estate, dinner time had arrived.Ethan checked the time, then looked at the door again."Why isn't Vivian back yet?"My mother looked relaxed. "What's the rush? Every time she throws a tantrum, has she ever lasted past one night?"My father nodded along. "Exactly. Is she really going to call off the wedding?"They all waited for me to come back.Time ticked by. Dinner ended. The clock kept ticking.Outside the door, there was still no movement."It's so late. Why isn't she back?"My mother was the first to grow restless. She called me.But the line couldn't connect.Unease crept into Ethan's chest. He sent me a message too."The system says I've been blocked."His face darkened. Then he noticed I had also left the family group chat. The room went quiet for two seconds.Chloe refused to believe it. She ran toward my room."I don't believe she'd abandon this family."The moment she pushed the door open, her voice stopped. The others followed. The ro

The day I left, the house was lively. In the center of the living room, Chloe sat cross-legged on the carpet, laptop propped on the coffee table, editing a video. My father stood behind her with his arms crossed. My mother held a plate of strawberries. They all burst out laughing at the video's content.Chloe had sharp eyes. She turned and saw me. Her face lit up instantly. She jumped up and ran over, looping her arm through mine, hanging off me."Sis! Perfect timing!""I edited all our family's happy moments from over the years into a video. The next morning, Ethan came to see me.When he saw me busy tidying the house, he looked displeased."You still have the mood to clean?""Because of what you said last night, Chloe cried all night."I frowned. "What did I say?""Chloe just wanted to borrow your ribbon for a few days. You deliberately said she could have it—that was you sulking at her, wasn't it?"He said it like it was obvious."She meant no harm. You're her big sister. There's no need to hold it against her."Then he noticed my hair."You cut your hair?"I said "mm."He looked me up and down. To my surprise, he seemed relieved."You should have cut it a long time ago. I always thought your hair was too long. I was going to find a chance to tell you to cut it, but never got around to it."I turned to face him."Why cut it? You used to like it.""That was before. Once we're married, there'll be a lot of family responsibilities waiting for you. Who has time to maintain long hair?""Chloe did us a favor, actually."My han
